STOCKS .l\l > 7it\IS.
NRW YOIIK , Aug. S. The stocli market
today was comparatively active during the
forenoon , when all the business of Importance
was done , but dull In the afternoon , with
almost stagnation In prices. The market
opened with a continuation of the raids by
the bearish contingent , but Chicago Gas , not
withstanding the announccmentof a dividend ,
was selected to bear the brunt of the attack
and soon displaced Union 1'aclllu from the
leadership. The movement was rapid and
within a quarter of an hour.'Ipor cent bad been
knocked from Its nrlce at. the opening. More
attention was aftorwaid given to Union
1'aclilc. and while thu decline In It was not to
bo compared with that of yesterday It
reached materially lower llgnros. There was
undoubtedly considerable selling of long
storks but the repetition of the rumors In
regard to the financial standlm ; of the com
pany and thonttribullng of long selling to the
approach of the session of congress which Is
live mouths away , uolnteil unmistakably to
bear manipulation us tbo chief c.itiso of tlio
drop In stock. At the same time there was
no evidence of support to It beyond that
given by the purchases of previous short
sellers.
The market , as usual during tbo continu
ance of such operations , was narrow and less
than ten stocks furnished seven-eighths of
the buslne-s done , the rest of tlio list being
without feature of any kind , while even the
active stocks , with the exception of the two
loaders , were traded In within narrow limits.
The raids in the early portion ot the day , with
tlio recovery after the pressure was removed ,
were the occasion of tbo greater portion of the
business of tlio day , but the Until rally brought
the figures up to a respectable number.
Prices continued to Iliiutuato witnln narrow
limits with a general upward tendency
throughout tlio afternoon until In tlio last
hour , when the olTort to cover assumed larger
proportions and was excelorated liy a story
that a lame amount of gold bad been ordered
for importation from Krance. No truth could
be found In the story , uut It served to make
tlio upward movement In all the leading
shares as sharp as the decline In the two stocks
during the early trading. Tbo com roads
were specialty prominent In the rise any many
of thu active shares made material
advances at thu time. The market
finally closed ( inlet , but strong at thu
best prices of the day. Tlio dual changes are
generally fractional advances , but Iturllut-
ton IB up l'i per cent : New Knglnnd , I'i per
cent ; while tlio losses of Importance were cut
down to ? per cent In Chicago Gas and 1 per
cent each In Union 1'aclllo and Colorado
Coal.
Railroad bonds were a little more active
and followed closely the temper of the shaio
list , being as n rule heavy in the forenoon and
stronger la tor In tbo day. There were few
marked Improvi'munts , however , and no ma
terial declines , while the Kcadlng issues and
Klchmond & West 1'olnt ( is showed consider
able strength In the Una ! dealings. The Ter
minal Us shot up : i per cent to UJ , hut no other

Korntvnit : : , N. Y. , Aug. 5. The leading
manufacturers of agricultural Implements
throughout the country luivo formed n com
pact which virtually amounts to n boycott
upon the county and state fairs and agricul
tural exhibitions of all kinds , for the past
twenty-live years thooxhibitsof the concerns
have lormcd ono of the prominuct features of
thu exhibitions throughout the United
States. The space hurotoloro occupied by
these exhibits will hereafter bo vacant. The
agreement , which bus been signed by fifteen
of tha eighteen principal manufacturers , In
cluding the McCormick , the William Doer-
ing , the Aultman-Millor company , reads as
follows :
We hereby agree that during tbo season of
IS'.ll ' we will abstain from exhibit.ng at any
and all county and state and other similar
exhibitions and that wo will during this sea
son furnish our agents with printed matt-r to
circulate al , their county fairs in case they
dccldu to exhibit , at their own uApensu.
The reason given for this step Is that the
manufacturers hnvo coma to the conclusion
that tin ) thousands of dollars socnt in this
kind of advertising , while it goes far to
wards supporting the fairs , brings no leturns.

the east to study the agricultural conditions
of tha eastern states , and at tbo sumo time
to give information to those interested con
cerning Kansas linnncially and agricultur

'All this talk about Kansas being o.ink-
ruptistho sheerest nonsense. The fact is ,
the state is in oottor .shape than over boforc.
There has never been a year when crops
generally throughout tlio entire bru.ulth of
the state have been bettor than this year , or
whim prospects wore better for good prices.
From the statistics just received by our de
partment , I estimated the aggregate vuluo of
thu output of Kansas farms , over and ubovu

farmers , to tie $ ' .KOi)0UOO. ) ) After the farmer

Kansas farms , from trustworthy authority
1 have learned that tbo county and municipal
bonds of Kansas are paid up promptly at tbo
fiscal agency in this city , nnd many counties
have paid their bo.ids before tboy are duo.
I know it to bo a fact that many farm loans
maturing the past year wore paid olT by the
farmers out of their crops of the last year or
two , From my Knowledge of Kansas fann
ers , 1 tun sure eastern capitalists need have
no fears that there will bo an.y legislation in
that state jeopardizing the interests of in
vestors. Tno farmers will puy as soon as
they are able. The history of Kansas bus
been that numbers of good crops always fol
