I'coplolio AVorc I.ookliiK to Get Something for Nothing ere now Just u Mule I It DtibluiiH About It. These who have bccoino members of the Mutual Onu Year Hcnollt order of Boston , Mass. , nro considerably excited over the alleged crookedness of olio Frank Powell , who has ueen stopping nt the Hotel Gordon for the past three weeks , whllo working up the order. According to the circulars which were distributed by the orgnnl/or , thcro were two classes of I'cnciHs , either one of which the members might loin , the classes bclnif called "Endowment Class A" and "Ilfo Class B. " Iho Initiation fuo was SS for either class. A person Joining class "A , " so some of those apiiroaclied were told. might nt tlio end of one year , und after an invest ment of about JIO , iiruw out $11)0. ) Class ' -B" offered n co-opuivillvo Ufa lusur.lnco at the rate of about fS per year per 51.000. By this bert of inducements a couple of lodges wcio orgnni/.od , one by G. W. Spur rier of this city and the other by Powell him- self. The llrst lodge consisted of thirteen members , ton of whom took certificates of $1 In class A , which entitled them to $100 nt the end of Ilia year after paying Iho lequlrod assessments amounting to about S. . The other three touk $1.000 each insurance in class B. Thn second loilgo consisted of twenty-two members. Powell a day or two ago asked Ed. Wright to become it deputy organl/.or ur.d start a ladles' lodge. Wright was not willing to go it blind so ho took the precaution before ho accop'.cd the position to telegraph to the state auditor J. A. Lyon , nt Lo ) Moincs , to find out whether the company was registered in duo form. Ho received a telegram announcing that the Mutual One Year Uenellt order \\ns not authorised to do business in Iowa , This annnuucomcul sptend quickly among the members of the lodge ? , and it was not long until every one was clamoring to get his money buck. As soon as Spurrier le.irned the state of alTnirs , he started around to notify all whoso signatures ho had taken that ho would pay all of them back out of his own pocket , in case the comuany turned out not to bo what It had Ueen represented to be. E. E. Adams Is among these whoso names appeared on the charter of the lodco which Powell organized. Ho now claims that ho gave Powell no authority whatever to put in his niimo with the other applicants for ad mission to the order. Yesterday morning ho sent word to Powell that ho wished to sco him , but the gentleman , who was standing not far off , immediately turned and walked in the opposite direction , showing plainly that ho did not care to have much to do with tlio boot and .shoo man just then. Adams went to the ofllc-o of City Attorney Stewart and wanted something" done , hut Just what ho did not know. Ho was told that If ho wanted to ho could have Powell arrested on u charge of obtaining money uiidcr fnlso pretenses , but Adams wanted some one else to take the responsibility , so no In formation was Illcd. Yesterday afternoon Powell left the hotel Gordon , and the rumor has circulated that had loft the city ns well , in order to get away from the consequences of Ins business transactions. City Attorney Stewart was asked us to the truth of this report. Ho stated that Powell was all rlhl. and ho would euaranlca that ho would bu on band when ho is wanted for trial , If ho over is wanted. A telegram has been sent to the headquarters of the order , in Boston , notlfv- ing thu management of the predicament their representative is In. A telegram was received - coived ycsterdav afternoon announcing that their certified papers arc now on tholr way to the state auditor at DCS Moincs for fillnp. Powell has asked Adams and the other mem bers of the lodges who are now dissatisllod arid are trying to got out of tha organization to wait before taking any decisive step until inoro is heard from his company. Ho states that If ho finds that the company for which ho Is working Is a fraud ho will pay back to the members of ! the local lodges all the money which ho has received from thcro. If it bankrupts him. City Attorney Stewirt thinks that ho Is perfectly honest In the stn emcnt , The prospects now nro that In the course of a few days the members of the lodges who have been frightened half out of tholr wits by llnding out that their com pany had not compiled with all the legal formalities , will Ibid out also that it is a straight business concern , and will do all It promises. _ The Boston Store's grout cost sale previous to inventory sttirtu this morn- hir } , whoii ovorythlni ? in tlio store will bo offered ut actual cost price for ton ( luye.
