The stock market today displayed a materially butler lone on Ihu whole than yesterday , while prices made considerable pmcress In recovery of the losses of the previous day. There was a marked decieaHO In thu amount of business done during thu day and thu dealings ex tended to a smaller number of Blocks than yesterday. Thu apathy of speculators , how ever , seems not to havu been broken us yet , and the hopes of Wall street men that , thu dullness had been checked by thu decline , was not ruall/ed today , Thu bears claim to havu full command of the market , and that all the buying Is for thu short account , but thu con- tlnuancu of nn upward movement , today wuuld seem to Indicate that Home onu Is willing to take securities at concussions whllu thu advance don't tempt hulling except by the short sul ers. In thu market today , however , the stocks whlcn are supposed to havu Ihu largest short Interest , viz : HI. Paul and llurllngton , weru thu only leally active stocks , but thu luttur displayed tins most stubborn stiun th. The only really weak point lu the list was Lead Irust though a drop of Jlpcr cent lu Ten nessee coal lelleved the monotony among the spectalllus. There WIIB undoubtedly heavy covering of shorts and brokers jduutlllod with Ihu leading bear operations wuru large purchase's , especially dm In. the forenoon , hut Ihu foreigners did something In that line also and the fcullng became more bullish from the very fact thai large lines of shorts were covered. There weroslzns of support In Kleli- inoml & West I'olnt and that stock while re covering so smartly was again comparatively dull , hut the preferred stock failed to move lu either direction. Thu Industrials with thu exception of Load wuru In thu hoileuted and thu new prices shares as a rule showed no feature. Opening wore from ! IJeall/.allons caused a sllu-ht reaction In the afternoon but Inter the best liguros wcru again attained nnd llnrllngton scored a still further advancu. In the afternoon Tennesseu coal dropped M percent and realizations again sagged the list oil' lu the lust hour but only in the VII ards was there any real weakness , all of Ilium retiring ever 1 per cent from Iho best llj'iiru. The market finally closed dull hut fairly llrm at small fractional gains for the dny. The active shares , howuvor , are not ably all up large fraclIons and llurllngton , notwithstanding the reaction , Is 1 per cent higher thnii lust evening. Ualliond bonds werualltllo more active , even though the dualtngsveru not so widely distributed and u linn lone marked Iho busi ness , most of the Issues traded In showing some Improvement over their last previous rates.
