Corn made a BplurRii about the same time anil these com bined Inllnenees put some life .and vljfor Into the triulo but the uusine.ss developed was not larzc. The advance brotiKhtout free offerings both In the way of rcall/.liiK on purchasrs made early imd abe In tliu vray of flliort hul- II111 ; and the bull news as well as the bull en thusiasm belii cxImuMed , there was a drop In values. Triers remained steady with n I Wit passing until within n few minutes of the close when the .shorts took fright , prnbiibly on rumors of a corner abroad , and amid some excitement rushed Into cover , putting prices to the highest point of the day. the market closlnp firm. .Inly opened nt tAWWic. sold to t-Sc , rallied to We , fluctuated narrowly with an upward ten dency till just before the close , when It hounded from OiWf totrj'jo and closed there. December opened at frf'i'i&frjtc. ' ' sold oir to HT'je , rallied and In the lluul rush wont to B'J'ie. Con developed a peed deal of strength and kept it to the end. There was growing un- o slness on the part of shorts and Increased eagerniss to cover. Cables wore stronger , the cash demand liberal , and advices from the In terior Indicated that shipments are likely to show n serious falling oir. The offerings were limited and there was an active compe tition for all there was for sale. The deliver ies on July contracts amounted to nothing nnd this contributed to the llrmncss. b'ome big short lines wore covered , Congdnn being a good buyer. In the stock market today the demand from the shorts who were forced to cover yesterday ceased and the higher figures met with a supply of blocks which for a moment checked the upward movement , though no reaction was seen even when the market had settled down into the old dullness. London was still a buyer to a limited extent and. the continued weakness In exchange neutralized the Influence of the further small gold export and tlio prevailing sentiment was decidedly bullish , There never was a time when July settlements were curried through with so little disturbance of loans and the rates for money today were phenomenally low for such a time. This Is one of the principal sustaining forces In the market and whatever causes the hesitation of buyers In the stock market , the money question Is evidently not a factor. The movumentsof the lastfowdays go to prove that the shorts arc easily driven to cover , are nervous and not all sure of their ground , The opening this morning was decid edly strong and Louisville & Nashville was I4 percent hghur ( than last evening , while the rest of thu list showed gains of from Ji to U poi' cent. The new Bulling by the trading element checked thu rise , however - over , and oven forced tome declines In the railroad list , but they were afterward fully recovered with something In audition. The Industrials came to the front with the Increas ing dullness In railroad stocks and tlio rumors In regard to sugar wllh.tho granting of an In junction against the p lymunt of the dividend resulted in a decline of 2i ! par cent which , howevur.wiiB afterward practically recovered , while Cordage scored a substantial Improve ment for thu day. Among the specialties there wore a fuw marked advances nnd Louis ville. . Now Albany & Chicago rose from wt to2JVi and Colorado Coal anil Tennessee Coal each 1 per cunt. Among the railroad slocks only S.t. I'uiil , Louisville , Atehlson and Hur- llngton showed any animation , and tne lluc tuatlons In the general list wore confined to the limits usual during the last month. Thu market finally eased oir slightly In the after noon , closing barely steady at Insignificant changes for the day In most Htocks while Louisville rose l' , Tennessee. 1'i and Cordage . Silver certificates weakened .somewhat dur ing the day but offered no features. UaJiroao bonds weru even moro than usual of Into tlovold of feature of Interest , and many bonds selling ex Interest , there was llttlo trail ing and small lluctuatlons. The total trans actions reached only $377,000 and no material change occurred In any Issue. Government bonds were dull and steady. ( X State bonds were ( lull and without feature. The 1'ost says : The favorable develop ments of yesterday in the sterling exchange market wns not olfset by anything In today's market. Uatoi for both long ami short bills wore easier and offerings free. The order for a small lot of gold this morning was of llttlo consequence , bolng apparently the execution of a contract entered Into before thu decline In rules and which thu contractors could not cancel. relroicum opened steady , declined ? j on light stilling and closed dull : Pennsylvania oil , August option , sales : 11,000 barrels : open ing.
