llled with patients , and before the winter
was over many cases had been turned away
on account of Insufficient room , As
soon us tbo weather permitted the
low building was remodeled and en-
argcd , The work hai been pushed with
, ho usual vigor and rnergy characteristic of
the men who established the big enterprise ,
and now all of the workmen nro out of the
wav with the exception of the painters and
Infshors. When they cot through the build-
ng will not only bo a credit to the profession ,
but to the city. It is located midway between
Council Bluffs and Omaha , far removed from
any other building , Is handsome , bright ,
clean and now. The additions include forty
or fifty now rooms for the nccommoaatlon of
: > atlents , an additional operating room
uid many Important changes that the
; rowth of thu business and past experience
javo necessitated and suggested. Before
commencing the work of remodeling , Dr. E.
[ ' . Bellinger spent sos'oral weeks visiting the
K'SpltulH ' of eastern anil southern cities , and
the changes comnrlso the result of his obser
vations , giving the Institute the most ap
proved modern arrangements. The operat

proved with the times , and in this new and
clean institution every modern and ap
proved appliance and method Is
understood and applied. Every convenience
'
venience for taking care ot 'patients
Is provided. The electrical department is
complete In every detail. Over Jl,000 worth
Df now electrical appliances and batteries
liavo been added. Electricity plays such an
Important part in modern surgery that a
tlrst'Clasg hospital demands nn expensive and
complete apparatus , and nothing has been
omitted , Including appliances lor electric and
medicated baths.
The hospital Is under excellent manage
ment and in charge of n staff of first-class
physicians. The surgical department is
In charge of n head surgeon with
n skilled consulting surgeon , and
experienced nurses take care of the patients.
The Institute has been very successful. Not
a patient has died in the institute slnco It has
boon established , whllo hundreds have re
covered from wasting diseases and regained
iho use of maimed limbs. This Indicates the
perfect sanitary condition of the hospital.
When the changes are completed the county

signee. The liabilities , according to the
statement of tbo firm , are $13,000 , about
$20,000 of which consists of secured claims.
The assets It Is impossible to compute , on ac
count ot the complicated condition that the
financial affairs of the firm are In. The com
pany was organized about a year ago , und
ever slnco that tlmo has been in the business
of uullding houses.which were afterwards
sold on easy payments , A largo number
of bouses Imvo been thus built , sold , and

forty houses that , have not tound purchasers.
Frank Trim bio , attorney for the firm , and
also attorney for the assignee , filed the
papers of assignment with tbo recorder Just
before the hour of closing last evening.
The failure was caused by the persistence
of the ciodltors In demanding their money.
The way in which the company has run its
business brought in a certain amount each
month , but beyond this the money could not
go , and a failure to rent the houses that had
boon built , cause I a lack of funds , and the
only way out of thu predicamontwas to make

WASIII.VOTOX , May 27. Respecting the

fiom obtaining bait , it is said ut the state de
partment hero that action cannot bo taken
nor can nn opinion as to the merits of the
case ho gwen until further advices nro re
ceived. It has not yal been made clear to tbo
department whether the war ship has pre
vented the French Inhabitants from selling.
Those are two very distinct and difficult
propositions. In the first case it might betaken
taken ns nn assertion of authority over Amer

French authorities might bo exerting an uu-
deslrahlu authority over French subjects.
Until the real stnto of the cnso Is known
