8 THE OMAHA DAILY FRIDAY , MAY 22 , 1891. SIDNEY DILLON'S ' PROMISE , Ho Bays the Union PAclfio Hallway Will Stand by Omaha. WILL INCREASE THE SHOP FORCES , AVorltH nt Grand Inland and Lincoln to bo Knlnrgctl Mr. DIllon'H Tour or Inspection Hull NotcH. Sidney Dillon , In conversation with a Dnr. man yesterday morning said that the Union Pacific rcKul would stnncl by Omuhn. It had been decided , ho said , to Increase the capacity of the Omaha shops , to ngnln manufacture car wheels hero and t ) re-establish the foundry on a larger basis than of old. The working force would bo correspondingly Increased to meet the growing demands iiiiulu upon the Otnalm shops , Tills demand had not been properly met In recent years. The HIIIIIO policy would also obtain , ho aalrl , at Lincoln and ( Jrnnd Island. Shortly after the Adams' regime as.suincd control the working force at the latter points was cut dbwti to nu extent that those towns were considerably crippled. Ttio merchants of those towns will bo gratified to know that tlio old order of things will bo resumed. Mr. Dillon was nsKud about the status of thahrldgo and union depot case. He said that nothing could bo done for Oninha until the suit of the Hock Island I'gnlnsttho Union I'aclllo had been adjudicated. The court would not reach It for a few months , Hut Mr. Dillon assured Tin : Hr.n man that there was no disposition to crlpplo Omahn , and ho hoped that matters would soon bo adjusted whereby work coula soon proceed on the union depot. Ho saw the extreme need of the Improvement hero , as did also the now directory ot the road. Union I'nclllii Assistant General Manager Dickinson states that ho should not make any further changes before . his dopirturo ns 0110 of President Dillon's party. Ho- Inti mated that some changes might ko looked for during tils absence. It is rumored about headquarters that \V. \ II. Baldwin , Jr. , who was assistant to Vlco President Holcomu , will resign within a few days and leave the service of the company to enter the service of the I'ullmnn Car company us gen eral superintendent. Mr. Baldwin Is gener ally regarded as n man of ability , and his ac- ' qunlrituncra nro pleased at his success In securing - curing n good position. It is the general understanding aboutlvend- quarters unit among those familiar with rail road affairs , that the ofllco of superintendent of the Nebraska division will bo the next to bo reorganized. This olllco has been filled by nn acting superintendent since the new nmnngonipnt took charge of the road and It nas been understood nil along that Mr. Bltchonsdcrfor would bo cut off to make room for another. Among those who hnvo been considered as successors to Mr. BlicK- cnsdcrfcr , P. , T. Nichols , an old-tlmo railroad man and n staunch friend of the present ad ministration , Is conceded to have the Inside track. Another who has boon much mined of in tbls connection Is It. U. Sutherland , the present assistant superintendent , of the Ne braska division , with hcadnuartors at Lincoln. Both these gentlemen are practical railroad men and both have n largo circle of friends who would bo glad to sco th m advanced. Amoiifr the slates which have been prepared one naming Mr. Nichols as superintendent and Mr. Sutherland na his assistant l re garded with considerable , favor. Orr at Work. Thomas Orr was duly installed as ' chlof qlork In the ofllc'o of Assistant General Manager Dickinson , us announced , ln Tin : BEH Monday last. It was Intended originally that the appointment should take effect Juno 1 , but Mr. Dickinson will accom pany President Dillon on his trip of Inspec tion and will probably bo absent about thrco weeks , and for that reason Mr. Orr was in stalled as stated. Mr. Coykondall's ofllcial position does not ccaso until Juno 1. Mr. Coykondnll will leave Omaha within a short tlmo and will go Into commercial busi ness In Chicago. _ Will Accompany Sir. 1)111 n. President Marvin Hughltt and General Manager J. N , Whitman of the Northwestern arrived in the city yesterday and were In ' consultation \vlth President' Dillon of the Union Pacific on matters connected with both roads. _ Do MOVHCS Talk ? \Vo have our doubts on this subject , but if they could , wo bollovo their first words would bo to nsk musters nhvavs to keep n bottle of Hallor's Barbed Wlro ulnlmcnt on hand. Wednesday ovomng General Van \Vyck delivered a cluiractorlstiu address before the Cincinnati political convention. The Nebraska statesman declared the as sembling of the delegates was the legitimate result of the policy pursued by the old. polit ical parties during the past quarter of n cen tury. It had culminated In n general upris ing among the representative * of diversified industries of the country. The musses , ho thouKht , were propnred to seek rodro.ss ug- grcsbivuiy , noi uy nro or uynainilo , but with tbo ballot. General Van Wyck declared that while the democratic party pretended to favor free silver , In truth It would ho governed by the policy of Wall street , which was always opposed to the Interest of the people. The republican party ho thought no less venal , and favoring wealthy corporations and mil lionaires. Ho was satlsilod that the Me- Klnloy tariff measure was not , in the Interest of the people and that the rugged rights of the tiller of the soil could bo secured only through independent political action. He concluded his remarks bv quoting from General Harrlson'o message ot Ibtl opposlnc a mcta'lc ' tlminelal basis for the government. Tlio Lncllos Delighted.
