Again the Lake school has sustained Us
reputation of never doing thlnKs by halves.
The occasion was Arbor day nnd there
were ten trees , the gift of John I. licdlclc , to
plant.
The janitor nnd n hired man performed
most of the labor , whllo the to.ichor and tlio
SCO pupils celebrated In n manner that would
luivo made .1. Sterling Morton happy , could
ho hiivo been present.
The forenoon session of the school was devoted -
voted to the reputation exorcises , but there
was n great tlmo nftcr dlnnor.
In each room there were poems , recitations
and essays upon the subjects of wood , trees
nnd people who have been connected with
the forostH.
Promptly ntH o'clock , upon n given signal ,
tlio Lake school drum corps , consisting of
thirteen boys , eight with llfos , four with
snare drums nnd ono bearing n bns.s drum
that towered high nbovo his head , inarched
Into the hall beating u lively march. The MJO
boys nnd girls took ' 'position. " Miss Wit-
nun's pupils set the step and inarched Into
the hall lour abreast. They were followed
by the pupils from the other rooms , after
which the column inarched out the south
door , down the steps and about the grounds
in a soldierly manner. The marching con-
tinned until the pupils from Miss Valentino's
nnd Mrs. Carlisle's room , the class of 'ill ' ,
hud boon brought to n trco In the southeast
corner of the srrounds. The column stopped
whllo the band played "Captain .Tenks. "
Hero a hollow square Iwns formed about
the tree , after which Miss 'Whltinor" , the
principal , delivered u neat and appropriate
ndilrcss on "Arbor U.iv and Trco Planting. "
closing with the remark ; "I dot'lcuto ' this
trco to the pupils of the Lake school. "
Ono by ono the pupils of the 'ill class
grasped the spade , and as they throw dirt
around the roots of the tree , a pretty maple ,
they repeated selections referring to trees
nnd tree planting. A strip of red , white nnd
blue cloth were tossed into the branches of
the tree and the dedication exercises were
over at thin point. Afterwards the other
trees were dedicated with appropriate re
mark ? . Ono trco was dedicated to J. Ster
ling Morton , with the response by a pupil
from the eighth grade , "My heart strings
round theo cling , old man. "
A pretty scene was presented as the class
ot "Jl passed the class tree of ' ( K ) . Knch boy
as ho passed raised his hat and sainted the
tree ns n token of respect to their associates
who entered the High school last year.
When the trees had all been dedicated the
school sang "America" In a vigorous style
and the school day was closed.
All thu public school" in the city were sup
plied with trees yesterday , with the ex
ception of a few buildings which ore plenti
fully provided with trees already plantoa.
During the afternoon the pupils assembled
In the yards at the respective- buildings nnd
planted the trees with appropriate cere
monies.
At the Sisters of Mercy orphanage In Ben
son plaeo. especially appropriate services
were held , and u largo number of trees
planted on the spacious grounds ,
The po-itolllco was closed nt 1 p. m. ,
nnd all the clerks proceeded to plant trees

Dr. George L. Mailer , chairman of the park
commission , Is nottfccllni ; hopeful over the
prospects In store for the commission during
the coming season.
In conversation ypstcrdny the doctor said !
"I am only too sorrx to say that 1 have oQl-
clat Information tuat that portion of the
amended city charter referring to parks Is In
such a condition that It will result in taking
away all the power of condemnation which
the commission formerly possessed. In South
Omaha the commission would have power tenet
net , but In this city our hands are tied. "
"What does this mean for the parks nnd
boulevards that the commission had under
consideration last season I"
"As far as 1 can Judge , wo are In a worse
condition than over before. I cannot see how
wo can got over the difficulty that wo sup
posed was overcome by the passage of the
now charter.
"Tho only possible thing that I sco Is to
nsk Governor Bovd to includp the considera
tion of the park'law in his call for an extra
session of the legislature.
"Wo have had largo forces of men nt work
on the Bonus park bonlovnrd nnd In the
packs about the citv , but since interpreting
the law , all of the men have been called off
and the chances are that nothing can bo done
this summer. As matters now stand we are
almost powerless to lift a hand , simply on
account of the legislature falling to give us
authority to act. "
The other members of the commission were
soon , and all expressed themselves as being
of the same opinion as Dr. Miller.
The park commissioners met for a few mo
ments during the afternoon , passed the fol
lowing resolution and adjourned :
Hcsolved , That as the legislature has re
voked the city's power of condemnation that
the engineer now working on the proposed
boulonrd bo instructed to stop work at onco.
