between Conley and his wife and bad found ,
as near as bo could Judge , that the wife was
not all she should be. He did not consider
Conley very mucn to blame for bis actions

Tbe paper for the occaslbri wns bv Rev. A.
1C. Beans upon General Booth's book , "Dark
est England. " The gentleman firmly and
earnestly endorsed Central Booth's ideas ,
and his great philanthropic scheme for the
elevation of poor and neglected people.
The paper was given the closest attention by
the ministers present , and seveial entered
into the discussion which followed.
Dr. Thaln thought that the work of rcscu-
In ? the poor and distressed should not bo left
alouo to the Salvation army , but tbo plan
should bo adopted , in part at least , by ull
Christian denominations and philanthropic
people.
Rev. T. C. Clendennlne was bnartily in
sympathy with General Booth's ideas. He
said that it seemed very plain that God
had raised this man Booth up
for o great and grand purpose. He had
started with nothing , with no one to extend
their sympathy outside of the church and
but very few to encourage him within the
church.
By his efforts and those wbo have followed
his methods tens of thousands have been
rescued from the very lowest ranks of
human society. This movement has done
wonders among tno lower classes of London
and other great cities , and now the entire
civilized world has been attracted by Booth's
plan to help the poor and the down-trodden.
Henry M , Stanley has given what amounts
to nearly half a million ol dollars to further
the scheme proposed by General Booth , and
other philanthropists are coming forward
to assist in tbe great enterprise of re
lief and salvation for the unfortunate
and the poor. The speaker believed
that while this work should not
be left to the Salvation army , yet ho believes
that tbe scheme belonged originally to that
body of Christian workers and they were
better prepared to do effective work along
that line than the churches could do unless
the churches imitated the Salvation army.
He believed that ull Christian and philan
thropic people should lend earnest and prac
tical support to tbo Salvation army and in
that way help the grand work along.
Several others spoke in a like strain con
cerning tbe work originated by General
Booth.

bucket of Mrs. Maggie Motcalf nt 520 South
Fifteenth street.
Hollnquest routs a house from Mrs. Mot-
calf and was behind in his rent. An eviction
notice was served , but he failed to vacate.
There was some bad odor from Mrs. Met-
calf's well , and she surmised that her tenant
had Intentionally put roush on rats in her
drinking water. HolmauUt denies the whole
affair and appears to be a hard working man.
The case vvlll bo beard today.
Man Broken hy n Full.
The ossified mun. Lucius Monroe , who
is forty-one years old and weighs fifty-
bovon pounds , mostly bone , mot with an
nccident yesterday , and is now at the
New York hospital undergoing repairs.
The strungo phenomenon of humanity is
a negro from Virglnn He travels on a
cot about four feet by two with sides sup
posed to bo high enough to prevent him
from rolling off , with a negro nurse
named "Mosc. " and his manager
He had boon exhibited in Waterbury ,
und on his arrival ut the Grand Central
was taken in an express wagon to his
lodgings. While being carried upstairs
he wus somehow tipped off the cot , and
being unable to move a limh , sustained
u fracture of the right thigh bono and
the firbt finger of his left hand. The
doctors did not even bandage his leg. as
they bay it will unite just as well in the
ordinary course of n few weeks without
even splints , because the man cannot ,
move. Monroe is very cheerful and
does not Feem to objpct to an experience
of hospital life for a change.
Don't Be Deceived.
Especially when your health
may bo ut btako. If any one
offers you Johunn Hoff's Malt
