THE CONDITION OF TRADE , Plenty of Money for Easiness Purposes to Bo Had in Omaha on Good Security , LOOKING AT THE FUTURE OF TRADE , The Movement of Gooils of All Kinds Shown 11 Decided Improvement and McrcluintH Generally Very Hopeful. The most noticeable , nnil nt the same Umo the most Important feature of the past \vcok so for us concerns business and financial cir cles , Is the rupld rolurn of confidence. The fooling of uncertainty and Insecurity which took possession of the business world toward the close of 1S90 has disappeared from Omaha and all classes of business men ara not only looking forward to much batter times , but they are commencing to roallzo that the bet tor times are hero already. Two or thrco months ago bankers were saying that money was fairly easy but borrowers were hardly noloto agree with them. Now , business men report that plenty of money Is to bo had in Omaha on good paoor and that It is no trouble to secure It. A Chicago paper th'o past week remarked : "It goes without saying that bunkers hero are disappointed in regard to the demand for money by merchants nnd manufacturers , from which classes of business It is natural to expect a lively call nt this time of year. There is considerable surprise at the rapid accumulation of Idle funds. " The same thing is commencing to bo noted In Omalm , nnd local bankers generally antic ipate n still gro.xtor accumulation of funds during tbo next thirty days. Collections are bolter , which Is n very good Indication of an easing up in the money mar ket. As a rulu Jobbers report HUlo dltllculty In keeping up collections , though there nro still some old accounts , duo to the dull win ter's trade , that will have to bo worked out gradually. in mo country it is ciaunuu LIIUL uiuuuj in a llttlo close with the banks , but that is bound to bo remedied in the course of the next sixty days. As no hostllo legislation has been passed , thcro will bo plenty of money forthcoming from the east so soon as the crops are out of the ground. It is not expected that money will bo plenty with the farmers until after ti crop is harvested , but with good prospects ahead they will bo able to obtain credit suQlciont to keep trade moving. TUB FUTUIIE or TnAnn. While the present conditions nro greatly Improved , the outlook Is still much brighter. This naturally suggests the fact that business men look in different directions at the differ ent seasons of the year. At the close of the old year nnd the commencement of the now the business world looks backward , llgurcs uu the losses and gains and notes the mis takes. With the coming1 of April the world of business turns its attention tea a contemplation of the future and cal culations are made and plans formulated having 11 vital Influence upon every depart ment of business enterprise. As spring trade develops and agricultural and building operations cot well under way over n largo area of country , inferences are drawn and conclusion's reached by the representatives of various Interests and localities and n con sensus of oplonion Is formed as to the promise of business activity and material well-being. The opportunities for the formation of such a judgment covering a considerable period nro peculiarly favorable at this tlmo of year , and the correctness ot the conclusions reached is peculiarly important , for tbo scope of the whole year's work In almost nvory department of enterprise and indus try Is influenced to a greater or less de gree by the ideas now formed as to what the trade acd financial conditions of the coming months are likely to bo. As usual , the ex pressions , of opinion ara now coming In from many quarters , and .forecast Is the order of the day. As a rule a" hopeful view is enter tained , and in most cases good reasons are given for the confidence expressed ; the main factors of a prosperous spring and summer being generally regarded as quite as well as sured as can bo reasonably expected nt tbo middle of April. NIHIRASKA CHOI'S. Tbo season Is rather late In Nebraska , but the general outlook for crops is regarded as more than ordinarily promising. With an abundant harvest for IS'JL the prosperity- of the state is assured. The prospect for good prices for farm products is also reassur ing. Those best informed on tno subject say that wheat will probably reich : the highest price in many years , the principal cause of the rise being the failure of foreign crops. The wheat crops of Franco and Russia are much below tno average. The deficiency * Is estimated at i0,000UOO ! , quarters , as cold winds and frost have almost destroyed the French crops. Oormanv , Holland and Bel- glum all furnish pessimist reports. In Kou- nianla there is a decreased wheat area , and in Indiu there has been a bad wheat season. The only exception is Hungary , where there lire better prospects ; but It is almost certain that the world's wheat consumption will ex ceed the production computed. Whatever the magiltudo : of America's crop may be , it will not bo sufficient to cover tbo European deficit , thus compelling an extensive draft upon the reserves for the third year in suc cession. WHOLESALE TnAUEi Some improvement was noted in the wholesale trade a week ago , but this Im provement has been still more noticeable during the past six days. It is not confined to any one line of business nor to a few fa vored houses. It is the general declaration ot all Jobbers that business Is bettor , and the increased activity to bo seen among the em ployes and the size and number ot the orders being illlcd proves the truth of their asser tion. Trade is looking up and is now fullv as good as it was n year ago under conditions that in many respects were much moro favor able. Some houses oven go further than that and afllrin that their business Is now Heavier man it was at the same time last April. The weak houses among tbo retailers have gone out of business and these thai wore able to go through a period of stringency'nro in good shape to profit by the improvement In' business. Moro than that , as a Jobber observed , the retail trade lias learned a good lesson during the past few months nnd tlioro will be less trust ing out of goods to Irresponsible parties , and a cutting off of many other unbuslness like methods. A Jobber sums un the situation in this way : " 1 can't sco wherein wo could ask for much bolter trade at this season of the year than wo nro now getting , and the outlook for the coming full trade could certainly bo no better. COUNTHY rnomicR. The past week did not develop many now features in the market for country produce nnd prices changed very lltlle. lings dropped in the course of the week 5 'u owing to some what heavier arrivals , thouttli rcculpls are sllll very light compared with a year ago. Butler was a scarce article and the tend ency of the markut was stronger. Anything nt all desirable In the way of couulry butter sold quite readily at 20o and above. The season - son or the year Is now drawing near when It Is only reasonable to anticipate an increase In receipts und n corresponding decline In prices. This may bo taken by the coun try trade as a caution not to allow too much. accumulation of stocks purchased on the basis of the present high prices. Some change has boon observed lu the poultry market. The advent of warmer weather has caused n decrease In the demand for dressed poultry and It will not bo many days before it will bo unwise to nmko ship ments. The best dressed chickens moved slowly nt lOc , but doslrublo llva fowls sold fairly well at Rt.TSC .OO pordoz. Of other kinds of poultry so llttlo Is arriving as to hardly establish quotations. The hay markut keeps up very firm. The arrivals of good hay uro small and the best upland sold all the week nt tt4.f > 0iJ > lfl.OO per ton. A considerable proportion of the bay offered on the market Is of poor quality. srncuiATivn MAUKCTS. Tbo Chicago grain market bos been espec ially interesting during tno week past. The lone light between the local bean nnd the bollovers lu the foreign situation culminated the past week In a decided victory for the bulls. Shorts wore forced to cover nt a heavy loss. May wheat sold as high as $1.15 and July to 81.10U. The week closed strong at a moderate decline from the top prices. TradIng - Ing for the past three days has been of great magnitude and the market at times was very wild. Corn nnd oats have sympathized to n cer tain extent with wheat and the cash demand continues strong for both cereals. Provisions have boon comparatively dull , with a very strong undertone. Sinnll Advance lit Provisions and Ijlt- tlo Interest Sliowu "Xo I'artlcu- Inr ClinnKO In Cattle Steady. CHICAGO. April 18. [ Special Telegram to Tun HEM. ] On Vhnngo this morning every thing elsa was eclipsed bv the sky roe kot performance - formanco In the wheat pit. The great market of the past two days which lifted Slay wheat from 11.05 to fl.tl In llttlo mure than twenty- four hours was remarkable enough to stir the local trade as It has not been for mouths and create a nervous and excited fooling In the wheat market the world over. The action the first hour today was a fitting climax of such an advance. No one will over know what the market opened at. In loss than two min utes sales for May ranged from Jl.OO'i to 1I.12.U and nftar a combined effort of profes sional bears to turn the tide by forcing prices back to about $1.11 , the strength found vent In a burst uf sensational buying , which carried tbo price to $1.11(4. ( with scattering sales as high as $1.15 , or lOo over the prlco for the same month forty-eight hours before. This particular move witnessed the running In of several of the heaviest and shrewdest operators ever Identified with the boar side ot the Chicago wheat trade. The corn market started with n bo und of lo to''o from the opening prlco , but tbo high fig ures of Friday were not reached for a mo ment. Oats hold remarkably firm , but was not unsettled like corn. In provisions the sales early were generally ut slight advances , with the exception of a little dtp ot lOc ut one tlmo In moss pork. As It looked near the close of the session there nupoarod to have boon no adequate cause for the range of oo or moro In the prlco of May wheat the first hour. News from abroad was not as bullish as on several other days when llttlo advance was made. The causa of the explosion appears to have been n lot of big short sellers who were covered so deep by the advance the past few days that they were outside of the trado. The action of Thursday , followed by a still stronger head way on I'Hday , was a warning that oven mil lionaire operators dare not Ingoro when heavily short. It was a notice to thorn to come In. They got In this morning at a terrible ex pense. On the floor the talk was that the chiefs In this stampede were Sidney Kent and John ( Juilahy. It was apparent after the first whirl that their names were given up by brokers who bad bought furiously atthoopen- Ing , Of course many other operators had pur chases put down to them. The bulk of It was the covering of short wheat. This was the great force under the market. Hulls generally did not buy , they sold long wheat to brokers as big .shorts. Thcro was n determined effort on the part of Koche. Linn nnd others , who would not cover , to break the market down after the first few minutes ; whan they only partially succeeded the second end wave of buying caused the climax which landed the prlco of May wheat at $1.15 just fora second. In addition to the buying re ferred to tbo market hud strength from a Ilccrbohm message , Haying the cargoes on passage - ago were oxolted nnd higher. The selling for the dny was enormous. Long wheat bought for days and weeks past on the advance was thrown on the market and wus quickly ab sorbed. The market was wild and erratic all day till near the close. Correct prices were Impossible because prices were some times lo apart in different puns of the pit. The range and action may bo traced by the following ; May , Jl.lOii to Jl.OB ? to } 1.12.i to fl.lHi the first IIvo minutes ; then a great bulgato il.HY with general trading at that prlco and sales as high as 81.ir > . Aftorall the up heaval ol the morning Indications were for n moderate advance for the dny in May nnd possibly no gain in July. Wheat closed with out any special display of strength or weak ness after 1 o'clock. The last price for Mny wiifl $1.12i. ! or Uic over last night. July closed at Jl.OOVi , or but Ho over yesterday. April wus quoted nt $1.0 ! > ! 4l.lli ! and closed nominal nt 11.12. Compared with wheat the corn market was tame. Compared with n quiet market corn was active and unsettled. The belief that corn has sold us high as conditions warrant l.s pretty generally held. There will bo sharp upturns from tlmo to time because of the bull clique nnd the absence of any adequate stocks here. Un homo manipulation prices may even go still higher for an hour or day , but the tendency now appears to bo a sinking market. Holders lot go quickly and take profits. Shorts run quickly and take small losses. The market opened nt lower prices this mornIng - Ing around 72Kc for May unit CSHc to ( W&o for July. With the lift In wheat , prices jumped to 7ia'o : for May and 03 0 for July. Shortly before the close prices had dragged down very decidedly nnd rested ntTSMc for July. MeWhorler Mild weather ami no conspicuous strength In cnblo advices caused nn easier feeling on the curb and the opening was about le under yesterday's closo. Tim weakness , however , was but momentary. The pit was full of buy ers without limits and prices rose rapidly. A few lurno local shorts appear to luivo held out ngnlnst tbo advance until today and It wus thnlr buying that caused u very strong mar ket whom u comparatively weak ono bad been looked for. The shortage was chlelly In May , and ns current rumors about a possi ble corner on that option bad driven trade to n considerably extent out of It offerings were light und It wus necessary to bid tbo price up sharply lo 1111 tbo demand. At ono tlmo May wus moro than 4c over July nnd It retained most of this premium nt the close. It looks u.s If liquidation has been gen- erul lu the Mny deul und there is manifest n disposition to boycott It In the future. As eastern exporters nru practically short the options they have sold to foreigners und nro longlntlilsmarkutn.su hedge ugalnst such sales It ties up a vast amount of wheat hero that Is not available for speculative pur pose ; nnd will not bo until foreigners begin to soil out. This they might not do , their activity doubtless depending on the fu ture crop outlook and other Influential condi tions. Under ordinary circumstances tbo long wheat bought for eastern account would bo for saloon good rallies , thus relieving the tension , but such Is not tbo ease now nnd It Is hard to diagnose a market so circumstanced. It leaves little wheat hero to speculate on , considering our lurgo elevator sotcus nnd the covering ot ono line of shorts simply de velops a fresh interest- , leaving the market pruetlenlly oversold over the tlmo. Corn nnd oats contlnuo to exhibit Indications of further realizing und u closing up ot short contracts. Bulls scorn Inclined to lot prices olt some , probably to encourage another short Interest. The deal Is still In tholr hands and they may put prices considerably higher on the next turn. The crop outlook will , however , bo n factor In their calculations nnd they will watch the effect of warm , dry woutheronro- cetpts. Provisions were Inclined to bo. weak , but were supported by the strength In grain. The amount of business was small.
