It will bo a memorial event for many reasons , but chiefly because It will bo a fit season for rejoicing that the craft have been freed from the incu bus of an enormous death contracted in the most reckless manner and without any seem ing regard for the natural consequences likely to result from the erection of an enor mous building , at a vast expense , to bo paid for oy voluntary contributions nnd enforced assessments upon the craft. The debt Is now paid. The money has been raised to erect a suitable homo for indigent Masons in that state , , and to shelter and educate the Masonic orphan or the wards of the craft , St. Louis Is to have a now Masonic tcmplo , at least so It would appear from the meetings now being hold by the craftsmen of that city with n view to promote the undertaking. Scottish Kite , Friday night , April 10 , at low 12 in the First Congregational church in Washington , D. C. , the solemn funeral ceremonies of the Scottish rlto were performed over the remains of the late General Albert Pike , sovereign grand com- ranndor of the supreme council of the south ern Jurisdiction. So dense was the crowd that It was with great difficulty that the bear ers of the casket from the Scottish rite sanc tuary could force their way into the church , followed by the long line of Masons who wished to pay the last tribute of respect to the deceased brother. It was a quarter of nn hour after midnight before services began. The scene in the church was peculiarly solemn the hour of night , the assembled knights , and the somber trappings combining to make an improsslvo picture. The walls of the church were covered with Dlack cloth , while on a catafalque on n platform extend ing out twenty feet from tbo pulpit was the casket containing the body of the deceased knight. There were nine candlesticks , four feet in height , in three triangles , on the cast , west and south of the casket , each having upon it a lighted candlo. Othcrwlso the largo church was unllghtcd. On the upper end of the casket was a cnnplet of white roses , and oolow it the insignia o ( the order and the sword of the deceased knight in its scabbard. Upon a tablet near the coflln was n skull wreathed with evergreens , surrounded by seven largo candlesticks bearing no lights. At the head of the casket stood a great iron cross painted black. When nil was quiet the organ played softly nnd Grand Master Holt , bearing a lighted candle und nn iron hammer , walked slowly in from a room on the loft and stood at the foot of the Basket. Then twenty-onn knights , nil bearing candles and attired in black , fol lowed with scarfs of crape and their heads boro. They entered like shadows and ar ranged themselves in a semicircle on the west , south and north sides of the casket facing the cast. For a few moments there was perfect silence. Then a trumpet sounded in plaintive notes in an adjoining room and after the last faint echoes died away the grand master began the ceremonies accord ing to the ancient knightly custom. All was as nuiot nn death as he said ; "It is midnight nnd a new day begins forus. Our brother has finished his earthly proba tion. Death Is an Inexorable creditor whoso indulgence nothing in the world can pur chase. Every moment thut sees a irew born child laugh at the light sees also n man dlo and Dears the cry of a breaking heart and the lamentations of these who sit lonely and in the desolation of aftllction , no longer seeing the face > of the dearly loved ones. " The beautiful but wlerd services were con tlnuod by takiug the chaplet from the torn plea ol tno dead knight , the cross from tUo brcait , the cords from the feet nnd hands , nnd then In succession the attendants np- ironclicd the casket and. laid their right umds upon the eyes , chccU , mouth , heart , mnds , nnd foot , each repeating n blessing , vhcrx the last attendant * .had touched the body of the dead the llghulwns turned Up , nnd nfter nil had left the church the remains vero carried buck to the Sodttlsh rlto tom plo. plo.Tbo programme for the thirty-sixth nnnunl convention of the co-ordlnato bodies of tno Scottish rite , northern Jimsdlctlon , to bo icld in the valley of Chlcago-April 'Jl , 23 and K ) , Is now ready , and In dramatic parlance is n strong bill , with a nuidbcc of stars In the cast.
