At the tlmo that art took a revival In Flor ence the same Inlluehccs wcro felt In Siena. Splendid churches and palaces were built nnd embellished with pMntlngs. Today , in passing through thu quiet , narrow streets , ouo oncoiintnis on nil sides evidences of such wealth nnd artistic culture ns to iniiko the beholder stand before them in wonderment nnd ndmir.itioii. Hut alas I no city within their reach could escape from their all-powerful hand , and Slona , like , Florence , I'lsa and the others , must bear their crest of balls even to this day. The chief glorv of the city Is the cathedral , dedicated to Saint Catherine , the patron Haint of Siena. After a careful study of the cathedrals of Kuropo , this ono suffers nothing by comparison. Wlillo the facade is elaborate In carvings , nnd beautiful In design , tholntoriorls equally attractive. It possesses none of that severity nor baroness or the Duoma In Florence nor the Moorish richness of Saint Garco in Venice. It Is warm nnd restful to the eye , with Its many columns of alternate black und whlto marble , and Its long vista of naves. The floor is n marvelous piece of Inlaid work , tlono in whlto nnd black marble , represent ing Hcrlptural stories , while the white mnrble pulpit with Its wonderful bns reliefs done by Nicholas I'lsuno Is constricted ono of the fin est pieces of auch work In existence. J. Gallbralth and Captain Itay of this city , Dr. K. A. Klehardson of Clurks , and Dr. C. B. Little of Uloomncld. Hut before entering upon the particulars of the chase , u few greasy lines descriptive of Clarks will bo apropos. It to n small Union 1'iiclllc station of probably six hundred in habitants , situated north of the track n mila or juoro from the shores of the river. darks has several dis tinguishing features , notaulo nmong which Is the young ladles' brass baud. There uro n do/.cn members and from the rosy , buxom bunch It would bo dllllcult to select the liollo. They have had but u half dozen practice meetings thus far , but under the able directorship of Prof. Kochor have made most creditable progress nnd are now enabled to spiel with a rythni and n melody that would put to shnmo many an older qrgutilz- atlon. The band includes Mublo Dcltz , Ural K lint ; Daisy Hartwell , second K Hut ; Annii MelMicrson , first , U Hat ; Laura Gilbert , .sec end ; Mary Spellnian , lir t alto ; Maud Mc Lean , second ; Nellie Morse , tenor ; Mary Pratt , baritone ; Loulo Pratt , tuba ; Maggie Duller , snare drum , mid Lou Sears , bass. Next to the band in a noteworthy way comes Joe Urltidlo , banker , real nstnto agent , duck hunter nnd nil round square man. Dr. JB. A. Klehardson. the druggist , Is an other of the same sort. Undo Gcorgo West runs the hotel , and runs It well. Ho is a gentleman of the old school , but has under gone such n degree of modern retrogression that his pnstlno Individuality ban been almost wholly obliterated. Ho is Jolly , ro tund and gray , with n tongue sharp as a two- edged sv/ord , mid can swear louder and put more lire-water under his belt than auy nmu woat of the Missouri river. Ham Richmond , his chief clerk , is a second edition of Undo George , and when not occupied in jugitllng the spittoons and kicking thu Jogi out of the olllco can be found on n bur in the river erIn In bed. Sam is a sure shot on Swedes. Jack Martin , lawyer , politician and newspaper correspondent , is a handsome , royal fellow who lias no business in Clurks. He plays n "bob-tell" with the same esprit that marks his handling of a "straight-1 or a "full house. " Jack is also n bad man with his Jlns , and should the spirit inovo him , would bo able to tnako many a so-called champion lump over the ropes. Then there nro Frank Dietr , the lumberman ; Mr. Hart- well , the merchant ; Charlie Itoyt , the geese [ tiller ; Dr. Hobinson , and a score of other citizens whose names would fcliow up well In print. Hut enough of Clarks for the nonce. The first day out was a grand one , nnd the prospects wore Haltering for Incomparable sport. Wo put It In on the rlvor , which gurgled and rippled and rushed on its wav as if under some spell of enchantment , with the sou , south breezes playing over its gloss , nnd the topaz sunlight kissing the ragged masses of floating ice and snow-covered bars into ra diant smiles. Truly , the Platte , in the early vernal sea son , presents u Beautiful picture ns it ( lows , with n might } ' Impetuosity , onward nnd downward through a magnificent agricul tural country , BO lovely yet so romantic in its surrounding" details , so improssiv i in ItR sweep of grandeur. Far to the east are the dim outlines of the barren uplands , with their lacustral borders , where the cottonwoods stand nuked , but gloaming in the soft light ; to the west innumerable tow-heads and islands , dark and gloomy in the sluulowsbut affording excellent "blinds" for the lying in wait for duck or gooso. Stretching before you , tnrough a net-work of moving ice and snow-laden lloos , the savage Pluttc , a gleaming , glittering expanse of water , dim artery to nil the vast country boj'ouud , and everywhere offering a chosen homo for the Canada and ttio mallard , the sandhill and the flshhawk. The Pintle rlvor at this time of the year is a seemingly interminable stretch of watery wilderness , the whole country for miles appearing pearingto be so swallowed up by its ex tended shores as to bo absolutely indistin guishable ) from the river proper. The main cnanncl , if there be such a thing , oven to one familiar with the configuration of the land scape , cannot bo told from the countless sluices , divides , cut-offs : md cul-de-sacs which 1111 its broad l > c'd. It is bcldom , if cver.nt any point over a man's headbut , there nro channels deeper than others , deep holes and beds of quick sand , which make It hazardous , oven for tho' most adventurous mid skillful ducker to enter , yet in their high "waders" they boldly penetrate to the re motest bar , and cross and rocrossherothere , in fact anywhere , without fear or disaster , but many an inexperienced spring shooter has mot his dcatn in its swift and treach erous current' From time immemorial the Platte river has been one of the most celebrated resting and roosting places for wild geese there is in the world , and is still a haunt numerously visit ed every spring and autumn by both geese and duck. Thu birds ily off to the corn and stubble fields in the morning for food , ro- turntnir for ablution nud rest shortly before tioon , then off again rtbout the middle of the afternoon for supper , and back In the gloaming ing for rest and safety on the ban through the dreary night. The morning' in question rose fresh and radiant from her bath like Aphrodlto from thu sea. The pink tints of dawn faded , tbo distant bluffs warmed into purple nnd thu cottonwoqd tops brightened into gold. A little while and the sun was kindling the grans and willows into yellow life nnd then picking out the sprouts nnd dark leaves until nil was ono broad illumination. The robin sang us blithesome us in' May from n copse hard by nnd great wedge shape HOCKS of geese , and bunches of ducks wore to bo seen in all directions , ns with n honking nnd u cackling they left the bars and flow off for the feeding grounds. Dr. Galbruith nnd myself wcro but n few moments reaching a favorable bur , although it was with some trepidation wo stemmed the powerful currentbut manger quicksands nnd floating Ice wo got there some considerable time before the morning Illght was over. It was the work of but u few moments to haul out a half dozen largo cakes of ico. nnd standing thfcin on their edge in n semi-circle , " I our blind was complete"utul putting out our decoys wo were ready for business. Wo had scarcely got settled upon our knees when the monosyllable "marl : I'1 ' cumo from the doctor nnd peering through an nportura In the ice , a bunch of gccsc , live speckled fronts and n veteran old Canada In the lend , wns seen bearing down on us from the west. They wore decoying nicely , nnd as * they sot thoir-wings nnd came on straight toward us I whispered : "i'll taHo the big follow , Doc. " "All rinht , " ho reaponded. The next moment they weru within reach and wo wore on our feot. The noble old gander looked ns bk' ns the fabled Hoc. nnd I gnvu him the first barrel full In the side , but with n startled honk ho began to climb , nnd in my hurry nnd eagerness 1 made a clean mNs with my scconu. Crack" " crack ! went the doctor's Sralth , nna splash in the -water nnd thump on the ice , n speckle front cumo down to each barrel. 1 was horribly chugrinned , but 1 knew I had hit my bird hard the first shot and I cried : ' Oh , I lilt him , Doc , I hit him ! Did you see the feathers J" Yes , " replied Gulbralth , " 1 saw them , Simiv , but they wore all fastened to thu geese ! " eI That made mo madder than over , but I couldn't get back for the doctor was out after1 his wjse. The ono frf the channel was Idlloil dead ns n stone , uud ns ho lodged but n few yards away against luo Jagged Ice the doctor started for the otio which fell on the Ice , which wns only wiitifcd. Ho was obliged to ' shoot It over , Cut It tfavo him n merry chnso before ho uccompllsliod this. Once more In the blind , wo hadn't long to watt , when n Hock of ctiattorlntf snow geese Hying hlh ? , came llylnp over. The doctor said they were too high , but I would have shot at them then , mud 110 I wns , had they been out of digit. Imagine our sur prise , when n inAmfnt nftor I had pjured both batrels Into jta'm ' , nnd they wcro well past the blind , \vhbn 6110 let loose nnd came whirling nnd gyrating to the luo. It was n chiinco shoot , but thu bird wns dead as n door nail when ho "bounceJ upon the bar. "O no , 1 can't shoot gooaoi" was my sar- castle ejaculation , ns 1 ran to rottlovo my bird"Mnrkl" "Mnrkl" It wns a hunch ol redheads nnd they came tearing down the wind llk-j n hotiHo afire. I took the loft and the doctor the right and wo both downed our birds , mlno the drake nnd the > doctor's ' thu hen. Mine wns killed dcatf.but ngnln his wns wing- tipped nnd wobbling into the water , ho had to follow It nearly a quarter of n mile before ho succeeded in shooting'It over. While ho was out I got In another snot , a long ono nt n Hock of Canndas , but while I licnrd the shot Inn lie against the sides of thu birds , they were ht.nl citizens nnd continued on their way t'nrd the north polo. * Then there wns a long wait ; most of the birds had left the burs and would not bo back until nearly noon , and wo wore debating the question of going ashore when u Hock i of uinllnuls were descried circling over the j open water .across the river. The doctor ! brought his onller Into requisition "nnd nftcr considerable effort attracted the birds and they started across. They quickly de tected the gocso decoys , but shied Just as wo thought they wcro going to como in , nnd swerved oil to the loft. Tho.v made a circle of n mile , then came bearing down upon us ngaln. The doctor gave n running call nnd the birds shying a trillo , at Icntrtli turned nnd came slowly and suspiciously down toward us Wo know they were extremely fearful nnd tacitly agreed on talcing n long chance. Sure enough , when within probably tlfty yards of the blind , they "dished" and began to clltab , and knowing that was out- only chance , wo Jumped to our feet nnd let them bave nil four barrels. To our astonish ment four birds felL This good luck lufused us with n ronownl of enthusiasm and wo re mained on tho'spot until 1 o'clock , but to our disappointment the gceso did pot return only m sparse nud spasmodic Hocks , unerringly presaging a chauge in the weather. In tint meantime , however , we succeeded in bagging several more redheads and two mallards nnd two pintails. In the afternoon wo pulled ut ) stakes and returned to Clarks , deciding to transport the camp nnd entire outllt on the morrow to the Prairie creek country , In which direc tion wo hud noted nil throuch the morning the birds , both ducks nnd geese , were living. The next morning broke cold nnd tem pestuous , but nothing daunted we loaded up the wagons nnd In the tooth of a piercing wind pulled out for the north. It was a long and cold ride , over one of the most execrable roads , owing to the ulmost Impa s tblo snow drifts , man ever passed over. But wo reached our destination early in the afternoon , nnd ttie myriads of ducks uud geese Jumped in the vicinity had a wo l electrifying effect upon us , nnd wo soon forgot the discomforts ot thettlp. Under Captain Hnyls supervision the tent wns soon up nnd thu next half hour the lonely spot was ullvo with culinary operations , nnd the SOUL' of the cotton'pot ' and gtiddle quickly joined that of wind and ripple. .lust acioss Prairie rreek , ou the open prai rie and extending almost to the base ot the bluffs , wcro thousand and thousands of snow gccsc , with hero and there n bunch of Cunu- das and Hutchins , sitting solemnly on the ground , and illhnt ; the nir with their plaintive cries , while in the air , in nil directions , could bo seen hundreds .more , nnd ducks , princi pally mallards and s.prigtulls , until you couldn't rest.nnd straggling HOCKS of sandhills kept the wintry atmosphere * vibrant with their pscullnr nnd penetrating psr-rntl per- rit ! per-rut ! This was nn exhilarating sight that no sportsmen could withstand , nnd niter gorging ourselves with , haiu and eirgs , boiled potatoes , fried onions arid strong coffee , the entire out- ilt sallied forth to locate their blinds and got to work. Captain Hay and I built our blind at the edge of the back-water , not n thousand yards from the tent. Jt was a dUlicuit matter to construct a suitable blind in n country where brush or willows nro unknown , the only available material being n rank weed , belonging - longing to the rag family , and which nuly grows in straggling patches In thu moist places along the creek. With the aid of a half dozen lath , curried from the camp , and a ball of twine , the captain nnd I succeeded in contriving n pretty decent hide. We drove tlO ) lath in the soft ground to the depth of n foot , then strung the twine from ono to an other , on tbo order of n wire fence , nnd in tertwined \ \ ith this nn armful of the weeds mentioned , with sundry tufts of spear grass and wisps of hay. In nn hour's time wo had our decoys out and every thing in readiness , and wittout further ado took our positions on bended knees be hind this hastily improvised screen. Wo had but precious few moments to wnlt before n flock ot pintails cnmo In with n rush that almost upset all calculations. The pin tail is n bird that docs not decoy very readily In tno spring , but on tnis occasion they worked lilto a charm , nnd a half hour after getting our decoys out we brought no loss thnn nineteen to bag.
