The county nupervlsors held a highly , in-

most Importai.t thltiRs they did was to re
scind the action ot Wednesday in granting

vlmlof a surprise to some people , but it was
lone , nevertheless ,
II seems thut nftcr the grantlnRof the
Ib'lilof way sonioof tbosupervlsow got to
thinking the matter over and came to tbo
conclusion that they had not done what they
utcndud to do , but instead had opened up
the wav fora lot of litigation , which would

The county supervisors do not want any

thing to do under thu circumstances was to
rescind tno pruntln ; of tbo rlpbt-of-way , ex-

A. C. Ciiahain , who nns one of the llrst

Tlio bills of .M. D. Ilardln , overseer of the

for SIWJ were ordered paid.
The bond of the now overseer of the poor ,
J , L. Foreman , In the amount of $3OOO , , was
approved , and the auditor was instructed to
pay to him $ -'OU , or so much of that sum as
should bo necessary , to pay tlio cash Items
until the next meeting of the board ,
Ono of the most , interesting features of the
nftornooa session was the consideration of
the bills of tbo various Justices of the peace
for the norkhich \ has been performed by
them at thtj expense ot the county. The bill
of Justice Cones for.10 , und oven that of Jus
tice Hammer for § 1 , caused no remark , but
when that of Justlco Patton came up , cnllln K
for SOi" , the supervisors began to open their
cjos. Then they began to rcmeiilbor that
not long ago a quarrel hnd arisen between
Judpo McGco and the police department , the
icsult of which hnd been that tbo olMeershad
Ignored the superior courtwhloh according to
law is designated as ttio proper place , to try
city cases , and In a good many instances had
llled Informations bofoio Justlco Patton.
Then they began to examine. Judge JIcGeo
v > a < > on the ground , and as liohiul Imd the bill
of Justlco Patton and had given it a pretty
thorough examination before bund , no was
able to give the supervisors a fjood many bits
of inlormatlon thut they wanted.
There was ono item in tbo bill which called
for witness fees for Marshal Templeton for
cloven days. Marshal Templeton hnd told
Judge McGco that ho bad never testified in
Justlco Patten's court , and how thnt bill
could have gotten tbero wns more than ho
could tell. Deputy Marshall Fowler was
credited with two days which be claimed he
had never known anything about ,
and Deputy Marshal White had In a bill for
nine days , when hoclalmui.bo had only tes-
tilled In Justlco Pulton's court on two occa
sions.
Another thhiR the judco claimed to have
found la the bill was that with reference to
the trial of thu Kissel family for tbo theft
of a lot of jewels from the Grand
hotel. There were four In this family ,
and they wcro all tried nt once , but
Justice Patton hnd put In a bill for each ono
separately. Three young men had been
arrested at ono time for creating a disturb
ance in the Salvation Array hall. They too
were tried at once , but bills wcro sent in for
the tiial as , though they had been held sep
arately.
Jutlgo McGee wont through the bill
with the supervisors nnd pointed out
so many little discrepancies that It was
nt last decided that the proper
thing to do was to call Justice Patton before
Iho board to explain the affairs of nis ottlco.
For this purpose It was thoucht best to ad-
Journ , and a meotlnt ; will bo held today for
the purpose of making a thorough investiga
tion. If Justice Putton can explain his bill
to the satisfaction of the board , it will bo al
lowed , but If ho cinnot , there Is a strong
probability that things will bo made some
what unpleasant for him.

Married Ills Sister.
A tragedy of unusual sadness Is re
ported Ironi the little town of Newport ,
on Avon river , near Windsor , Nova
Scotia. The body ot IMndclolno Uuvul ,
ajjcd twonty-ttto years , the pretty youiiL'
wifoof LupienDuval , was found drowned
in an ico-liolo In the river. She was an
orphan-full ! had only Tjcen married two
years , and was devoted to her husband.
The body showed that BIO ! had not boon
long in the water. The remains wore
taken to her homo , whore her baby was
found crving of huniror. A. search
for Iho iiubband found him wander-
injj aimlessly about in the woods , al
most u milo from his homo , evidently
iilinost semi-demented. This led to the
suspicion that ho mifrht bo responsible
for his wife's death and ho was watched.
"When the funeral of Mrs. Duval was
held and during the excitement attend
ing the obsequies ho eluded Ills keepers
and lied. This evening his body was
found hanging in , the barn dead. In his
pocket was a letter saying that over
since his murringo ho had been trying
to ascertain who his wife's parents wore ,
she bolnp an adopted child , lie hnd just
received hi formation from St. John , N.
B. , that she was no less a por&on
than his o\\n slater , hop mother
nnd father having separated , ho
goincr with his father to Prince Ed-
waid's Island. Shortly after the sepa
ration the daughter , Madeleine , was
born , nnd tlio mother , too proud to ask
help of the father , never told him of her
birth. The girl was adopted and brought
to Newport , where Duval mot and
wedded her , and ono child was the re
sult. Being very religious , they were
ovorcoma with horror at the dis'covory ,
which evidently drove Mrs. Duval in
sane and led to hep rash act. Horror
and rcmorsoat her f ate also drove him
to a similar end. The bodies were
buried togothor.

At the battle of Monterey , General

was to bo his signal for attacking the
palace In the rear. The regiments toolc
their posit'.oa and Colonel Jen lifer nbkcd
Colonel Hayes if he would inuko the at

understand the military terms and said ho
would think of it. Soon after Colonel
Jeniffer returned and said : "Probably ,
Colonel Hayes , you will attack by com
panies. " Still Colonel Hayes declined
to say how ho would attack and again
Colonel JcnifTcr returned and said :
"Probably , Colonel Hayes , you will move
on echelon. " This was too much for
Jack Hayes , and ho replied , "G'olonol
JonilTor , when I hoar the signal gun , I
will toll the boys to take the d d thing
and they'll do it. " Judge Bell said soon
came the signal and Colonel Hayos'
order to attack would not bo found in
Htirdlo or Upton , for ho shou\ed , "Go
for them boys"and they wont , and in a
few minutes the capture was made.
Sounded Scientific.
A lady was lying upon the eofa the

crucintingly , when n friend called upon
hor. "What is the matter with YOU ? "
asked the friend , "i don't know , * ' was
the answer , "and 1 don't think the doc
tor knows ; I suppose , though , " she
added , reflectively , "tho all moat ought
