The first I hoard of it was when Fred came rushing Into the house uftor brcnlt- fnst. "Tho onomyl" ho cried. "Tho onoiny Is upon usl" ' 'Whoro' : " ' cried the others of us , jumping up. "In the bottle-Hold , of ooursol" ho snld , nnd ho seized his flag nnd rushed out again. \Vo all followed as quickly as wo could , says a writer in St. Nicholas. I nut on the helmet and Max toolc the drum , and wo lot Toddles have the hujflo this time because ho'd just tumbled down , and ho had the heurtn-brooin , too , so ho was all right. Wo ran into tlio Hold nnd found that the enemy had taken up a strong position behind the old cannon. ( Ours is a real battle-field , you know , and has bcon there over slnco the war ) . So we formed in lluo nnd Prod made a Hank movement , meaning to take the enemy in the rear : but when ho beard Fro'd coming ho charged on our line , nnd Toddles ran awuy , but Max and I retreated - treated in good order and formed again behind a rock , and begun lo shell mm with green apples. Ho stopped to eal the apples , and meanwhile Fred com pleted his Hank movement , and falling upon the enemy's rear , whacked it violently lently with n stick , waving his ling till the time and shouting : "Yield , caitill Yield , craven hound ! " ( I toll him that nowadays people don't say these things in war , but ho always says that Roland nnd Bayard did , and that what suitct them will suit him ) . Well , tbo enemy turned buddeuly on Fred , and drove him buck against the cannon ; but by that time wo hnd ad vanced apain , and Toddles was blowing the bugle as hard as ho could , wilier seemed to disconcert Iho enemy. Frei took a flying leap from the cannon rig.hi over his back , and putting hlnisolf 'at oui- head rallied us for a grnnd charge. Wo rushed forward , driving the enemy before us. A panic seized him , nnd ho lied in disorder ; wo pursued him as fat us the fence , and ho got through a liolo nnd escapcdVbut not before wo ouch hat a good whack at him. It was a glorious victory. Fred mndo us a speech nftor ward from the cannon , and wo all wavec our well , whatever wo hud to wave , tint vowed to slay the invader if ho over dared to show his nose on our side of the fence again. Ah , yosl it was a splondii fight. "Who was the enemy ? " Why didn't I say ? Farmer Thurston's pig , o course ! _ _ No Ono Stopped Klin. Life in California was at thnt tlmo n wild romance. No words of mine can describe the scenes thnt were cnnotod during Unit chaotic period , s-nys a writer in the Century. Thousands of men , or- gnul/.cd in bunds or wholly disorganized , were coiistiintly nrrlvlnif from ovcry part of the world and leaving for the liggins. Outlnwdiind ptofosstlonul gum- uiors opened fealoons uy the score nt ovary point wlioro men were congre gated. Money was scattered ovory- " wlioro us if by" the wind. Minors wllo had realized fortunes in a few days uamo down to Stockton , Saeramonto and Sun San Fi'iineibco to squander them in a night nt the gambling tables. All re straining influences of society were absent " sent , nnd I cannot flnil fin" expression hotter suited to Uiocubothiifnandoinon- ium on u frolic. " As there were no wives , there could bo no homes or families. A few stores had boon hastily put up nlong the shore , made of rough hoards or CUIIVUH and all of them wore doing an enormous busi ness. The rest of the village consisted of shanttosor tents used for restaurants and saloons. Iluman hfo was a moving panorama. The whole place was ulivo with a mass of unkempt men clad in Hun n ol shirts and heavy boots , who were inspired with the ono desire to hurry on to the mines. This rough life was not without its touches of sentiment. Ono day the town wns electrified by tlio rumor that nn in voice of women's bonnets hnd arrived nnd could bo seen at one of the stores. The excitement was intense and there wns a rush from every direction to got a realistic view of oven so insignificant a substitute for female society. 1 do not overstate the truth in saying that the thoughts of homo tha t were awakened in tlio breasts of the rude looking men at the sight of thoao bonnets started tears from eyes which the worst forms of pri vation and hardship failed to moisten. The Christian missionary was already on the ground , and good Parson Wil- liuins had mannered to find a place whoroho could prouch on Sunday. Ono of the lirst men who arrived with hist family came to ono of thobo meetings at tended by bis wife and baby. During the sormoiWt chanced that the hi cried mid the mother wns about to with draw , when the preacher addressed her thus : "My good wo in tin I beg you to re main ; the innocent sound of that in- fnnt's voice is more eloquent than any words I can command , It speaks to the hearts of men whoso wives and children are far away , looking "d praying for a snfo return to their own loved ones at homo. " Never shall I forgot the sobs nnd tears which those words evoked throughout that rougli assembly. Thnt infant's ' cry seemed to thorn the muslo of'angola. With these who miulo Sun Francisco their temporary abode gambling np- iioarcd to bo the chief occupation and Spanish monte the favorite game. One house fronting on the plaza , a two-story frame building called the Parker house , rented for $120,000 per annum , the rental being paid mostly by gamblers. A single store of small dimensions and made of rough boards rented for $3,000 a month. A canvas tent used as gam bling saloon rented for 840,000 per an num. Money was loaned on good secu rity at 15 per cent a month , and out of the lonn the borrowers made fortunes in real estate operations , Art nnd Mrs. Crawford , London Truth's Paris correspondent , says that tlio reason the impress Frederick was treated with such scant courtesy by Paris artists was because they interpreted liur direct ap peal to thorn to imply that the llunkoy eontimont wliich reigns in courts nnd servants' hulls wns paramount in the studios. Hnd a delegation of artists , representing artists only , boon sent from Berlin to Paris there would Imvo been no loss of dignity in complying with their requests. NATURAL FRUIT FLAVORS.
