ontlnuos exceptionally good.
It has been n week of unhealthy specula-

But manufactured products do not shuro In
ho ndvnnco except in a few cases. The Iron
market tins a better tone ; rails arc firm but
very dull , and manufactured products are on
ho whole weaker. Copper is weaker and
tin steady , with lead ashndo higher.
Wool is selling steadily nt Boston , and the
vervlnrgo consumption of Australian is a
surprise. It seems duo In part to the bad
condition of many western fleeces , but In
part to the fact that the homo supply Is
icnrly exhausted. The carpet wonts nt
. 'tilladelphla nro fairly busy and buying
'reely , many mills having orders for the
season.
At Boston money is easy and trade dull be
cause of the weather. Plttsburg notes some
decline in structural Iron , beams and billets.
At Cincinnati the carriage trade is brisk , and
at Louisville tobacco Is largely offered with
out much change In prices. Cleveland has a
fairly peed trade , but clothing , iron and ere
ire dull ; only $18.fX ) for charcoal Iron but a
good lookout for building. At Chicago dry
joods , clothing and shoos are dull , though
iulcsexcccdlastycar's for the same week , and
.ho receipts of wool are considerably increased ,
while there is a decrease In flour and lard ,
and a decrease of one-half In dressed bcof.
At other northwestern points trade is fair ,
though much affected by the weather and the
state of the roads , but slow collections are
.ho rule. Now Orleans Jlnds trade only fair ,
but cotton receipts Increased ; sugar Is dull ,

THESE WOMEN WILL Ull MUCH.
A Nebraska Town Settle : ! Upo i the
IinntlTliey Owned.
ALI.ENTOWX , Pn. , March 27. Miss Kath-
crino Solt of Allcntown and Miss Susan
Scbluttor of Centre Valley , this county , went
west together seven years ago to make their
own living In a novel and hidopentent way.
They worn courageous and self-reliant , and
cherished the Idea that If women would as
sert themselves properly in business
enterprises they need not ho depend
ent on any of the mala sex , but could
snap her fingers in the face of all mankind ,
They settled In Nebraska , on the site of the
present town of Rushvlllo , and , having a little
tioard of money , each took up a grant of gov
ernment land consisting of ICO acres. The
nearest settlement then was twenty-live
miles away. Each of the young women
erected on her quarter section 11 small hut ,
and endeavored to live as comfortably as pos
sible until more substantial dwellings could
bo bul It.
They tilled the soil as best they could , and
by dint of hard and patient labor each raised
small crop * by the close of the first year. In
the second year n railroad was extended right
through their tractsand in a few months quite
n colony of families had settled nearby. Moro
settlers followed , and by the end of the
fourth year n prosperous little town had
sprung up. The county scat was located on
their land , and today it is a town of 1,000
population , with bright prospects that it will
soon bo a city.
Misses Solt and Schluttor own all the most
vnluaolo land In the town and thereabouts ,
and nro now realizing neat prices for their
building lots. They came east a few days
ago , and nro now visiting their parents and
friends In this vicinity. Surprise Is ex
pressed by their acquaintances that they did
not got married while In the west , but they
laughingly reply that they don't have to.

after a comparison with the prices charged nt
other markoU , the capital invested , etc. Ho
said it was absolutely necessary to have a
uniform rate to protect shippers from the
disreputable commission men who infested
the yards before the adoption of the rule.
Baker stated that under the present organi
zation disreputable merchants were prohib
ited from doing business on the exchange
and that members were compelled to pay
shippers in full whether they received payer
or not.
