Oiiiahit Compelitlnn.
Being one of tno many firms in Council
Bluffs alluded to uy the proprietor's of an
OiiKihu store as dushing protection acnlnst
competition , wo dcslro to icpell the uncalled
for and utterly groundless intimation that
Council Hluffs merchants have anything to
fear from any hind of stialght , honorable
business competition , whether it comes from
Omaha , Chicago or any other place. Wo are
not the party whom Hnyden Bros , referred
to in their rcmarkablo statement , and who
answered the thrust In .such n , spirited man
ner yesterday morning , which was read with
interest by all the readers of the dally papers ,
but wo dcslro to .speak in our ouri behalr.
This being a free country , wo don't -caro
who or how many Omaha merchants peddle
their goods In Council Bluffs. Wo can com
pete with any Omaha merchant In our lines ,
as the majority of our fellow merchants can
and do every day in all other lines. Wo bnvo
our regular Omaha patrons daily , who , know
ing tnoy can save from 10 to " 0 pur cent at
our store on the same clubs of goods sold by
Omaha nicrchimts , embrace the opportunity
of coming to the Boston store In
Council Bluffs nnd making the bulk of
their purchases. All the electric sticct
cars pass our doors , and the rltlo from Omaha
is a pleasant as well as profitable recreation.
In the near future wo contemplate opening a
branch of our store In Omaha , whore our
trims-Missouri customers can get goods at
the sumo prices as obtained in the Bluffs.
Wo think such a brunch store would bo a
great success , as in many lines of our goods
uo would bo able to got better prices than
wo can In Council Bluffs.
Wo want to say a word or two about the
Marshal Field & Co. chestnut. If this whole
sale house , that makes a business of buying
up Imnltrupt stocks nnd antiquated lines ,
really put the Omaha gentlemen under&o,000 !
bonds not to sell any of the Klsoman stock In
Council Bluffs , wo want it distinctly under
stood that it was not done for our benefit.
The Boston Store requires no protection from
that source. Bo buy the bulk or our goods
from the manufacturer direct , gettingthem at
the same prices that Mill-shall Field & Co. are
obliged to pay , and wo give our customers
the saving of a middleman's profit. If the
Cmoago house magnanimously volunteered to
protect some Council Bluffs house by nutting
a big Omaha Him under such distressing ob
ligations their victims deserve more sympa
thy than the public will perhaps bo likely to
extend. Headers of our daily papers can
readily sco that wo are not the party referred
to in the deal.

In justice to ourselves and all other Coun

A prominent Omaha merchant rushes Into

intention of mlalo.uling the imullc. This Is a
strange sort of an error for an intelligent

hrondly and without qualification that wo

and carry no second hand goods of any char
acter. Wo buy nil our goods direct from the

round prices with the "marked up" Holaen
figures. When their prices were "cut In
two" our regular prices were still 10 to 15
percent lower than the "bankrupt bargains.
If Mr , Holdcn marked up thu Eiscman prices

On next Saturday evening "Tho Colum
bia , " the finest sntuplo room , mlltard parlor
mm cigar stand in the west , In the fitting up
of which Clco. Hudto lias spent n mint of
money , will bo opened to the public. It la
located at No. ! i3 Pearl street , next to the
new Grand hotel. The work of rcmod-
Ing the building has been going on
for the p.wt two months , and the
handsome cdlfico has been trans
formed into n palace , and It will bo noted far
nnd wldo as the finest plflco of the kind west
of Chicago. Mr. Hiulio has had the chief re
sponsibility of fitting up the palnco , and his
wldo experience ) as a commercial traveler has
eminently qualified him for the work.
A short description of the interior of the
establishment will not provo uninteresting.
The room has been separated by massive and.
handsomely carved oak partitions Into tlirco
division : , the first of wlr.ch contains the
ofllco of the proprietor and the finest cigar
stand west of Chicago. The second division
will bo tha sample room , anil the third
will bo the billiard parlor. Mr. Hudlo's oillco
Is a model ol beauty and neatness. A handsome -
some bronze wlro partition makes It suffi
ciently inclusive without obstructing the
view. A line Brussels ciirpet ana the beauti
ful bronzed safe , office desk anil com
fortable easy chairs give It n particularly
cozy and Inviting appearance. Hero Mr.
Hutllo will receive and eutortaln his friends
In his most ngrccablo mid affable stylo.
In perfect keeping with the elaborate
style of the office will be the cigar
stand on the opposite side of the room ,
which will bo presided over t > v Messrs.
Julius Ungcrnnd Ucnbcn Brown , two of tlio
most ponular young men in the city. The
cases , counter , etc. , are of OOK , hand carved ,
and no mere description of the beauty of Iho
work can glvo a correct Idea of It. To bo
thoroughly appreciated It must bo seen. The
sample room in its furnishings completely
eclipse anything over seen in this city. The
massive oak bar , the line French plato glass
mirrors and the beautiful paintings combine
to form a picture most pleasing to the eye.
Another thing In connection with this flno
work which Is of public Importances the fact
that all of the vood work Is the product of J. A.
Murphy's ' factory In this city , and Is n , credit
to Council Bluffs artists. Mr. Gcorgo Shir
ley of Chicago will ho In charge of this de
partment and the public will find him a most
agrccabla gentleman , thoroughly accom
plished in his lino. For the amusement of
the public Mr. Hudlo , with an originality
that does credit to one of the brightest men
that over packed a grip , has put in n now and
improved phonogtaph which will play some
of the finest pieces of Ollmorc's baud , and
will sing the latest songs , including "Annie
Hoonoy , " "Johnnie , Get Your Hotchkiss , "
and the "SweetByo and Bye , "
Last but not least , not by n coed deal ,
comes the billiard room. The decorations
and furnishings are like these of the otner
two departments , strictly elegant. There
are two billiard tables and a pool table , all
new and as fine as Bruiiswlck-Collandcr &
Co. can turn out. Air. James Anderson has
control of this department , a fact that will
add not a little to its popularity. Everybody
knows Jim Anderson , and to say that ho Is a
general favorite , is only expressing it
mildly ,
Taken all In all , the Columbia is a decided
success , nnd will no doubt bo n winner from
the start. Every dollar's worth of material
used In fitting it up was purchased and
wrought in Council Bluffs. The place Is one
la which citbens can take a pardonable pride
and to which they can tuko visiting friends
at any time with pleasure.
Tni' place will bo opened for the benefit of
the public , and it would bo something moro
than asimple : outrage if fanaticism should
assail it. It hns been lilted up in dofcrenco
to u popular desire fora first-class place of
rest for gentlemen , and is another indication
that the tlmo has como when fanaticism
should cease. There are few men who have
done moro for the city In a poneral way than
Mr. Hudlo. lie has been one of the most
popular commercial travelers among the
army who llvo In this city' IIo earnestly
hopes the public will appreciate 1113 efforts
and give him a fair show.

Loxnov , Feb. 18. A financial dispute be
tween factions is likely to bo ono of the
features of the coming Irish struggle. When
$ 10,000 , was released from the Icaguo fund , a
month ago , $20,000 went to thecampnign com

league , The McCarthyltcs say the latter
sum was too much and , furthermore , contend
that instead of being devoted to the evicted
tenants , It was used to moot an over
draft on the Hibernian bank. T. P.
Gill declares that McCarthy must
have known when ho signed the
rclcaso that the fund set asldo for
the tenants was heavily overdrawn. The
McUarthyltes assert on the contrary that ho
loft Bolopiio boliovlnp iho money was to bo
devoted to the evicted tenants only. The
question arise * whether thoio was a miscon
ception at the conference , or whether
O'Brien thought ho was acting within the
lines of the agreement in adjusting the bank
account. The McCarthyites InsUl on the
declaration that the fund bo used for tenants.
In an interview McCarthy denies the story
of a liberal subsiity of fc.0,000 for his party.
