Money is easier In Omnlm , but tbo rclaxa-
'tlon of tbo purse strings has boon so gradual
that the change from onu week to nnotbor
lina boon almost imperceptible , nml It la nnlv

for tbo best result } ot business to bo attained ,
but ttio fact is gratifying that the
change , though slow , is In tbo right direc
tion. Without the intervention of sotno
unforsccn complication in business , money ut
tlio end of another month must bo plenty.
With the bank reserves piling up in the east ,
nnd with inonoy In Now Yorlf cheap nnd
abundant , it would scorn as if inonoy ought to
bo much easier hero than it really Is , but it
must bu homo In mind Unit the stringency
did not reach Omaha until some tlino nftcr
Its worst effects were felt in New York.
Starting from thu metropolis It gradually ejo
tended westward , making Itself felt in Btif
fnlo , still hiter In Chicago nnd ut last In
Omnhn. In the sumo way the casing up of
the inonoy market wns llrst noticed.in Now
York , nml Is now on its wtiy west. It cannot -
not bo expected thsit the tnonoy market will
t oneo regain Its former position , ns the
losing of confidence is n much morn rapid ojv-
crntlon than Its restoration. When this fool
ing of confidence is fully restored inonoy may
bo expected to flow wcstwnrd In nn abundant
stream. Jus tut , present the return of conll-

fnct that both the stnto legislature nnd tbo

of the past wcok has , as a general thing
shown some Improvement. Spring goods nro
commencing to move more freely nnd in some
lines it Is Biifu to say that the volume of trndo
is fully up to whntlt was n year ago. Job
bers generally nr reconciled to the fnct thn
trade in western Nebraska must of necessity
T bo very light , owing to the crop failure of las'
year nnd they nro neglecting that section to
seek oU'or ' localities that give promise of bet
tcr results. In the long run the unfavorable
conditions existing In western Nebraska
the present tlino may bo of great bcneilt , a ?
the jobbers are by this means forced to seel
now territory Unit might otherwise bo cnp
tured by sonic rival Jobbing point and always
remain closed to Onuilia ,
Speaking of last season's snort crop bring
td mind a fact not generally recognized , but
nevertheless true. In the western countrv
tbero nro n goou many llrms doing n retail
business who consider themselves too largo
to patronize Oinnha Jobbers and who accord
ingly lay in their stocks of goods In Chlcngo ,
or In cities oven further east. This plan
works all right when money is plenty , but in
n short crop season like the present , when it
is h mil work to sell goods and still harder
work to collect the money lor them , they can
not ulTord to lay in lurgo stocks at eastern
markets , but buy in small lots nearer
homo. Then , too , the eastern jobber Is
frightened out bv the nppenrance of close
times nud Is unwilling to carry his far west
ern customer. Kits tern jobbers have lost
ground during the past six months that they
can never regain.
In the different brunches of the wholesale
trade ttiero have boon some changes'espe
cially In prices , that muy bo of general in
terest.
In hardware the market last wcolc was
llrm mid wlro'nulls advanced lOopor kegj the
present i | notation being S'J.OO. In n general
way the woolt's trade was quite satisfactory ,
although tlio volume of business fell below
the average for last January. Some good
ttprlng orders uro commencing to nrrivo for
later shipment.
The dry goods trndo has been gradunlly
improving since the llrst of the year , but the
nverngo for the month will hardly equal that
of n year ngo. In some parts of the state
miring goods are selling quite freely , but in
all tlio western part of the state they are
ilolng a "hand to mouth" business , that is
buying In small lots Juit sulllclent to meet
present requirements.
The wholesale grocery trndo of Omaha has
hold Its own spite of all obstacles and dealers
in this line generally tuko a cheerful view of
the situation. While they have lost trade In
seine parts of the stnto , they hnvo pushed out
into new Holds and hnvo tried to mnko up In
ono way what they hnvo lost In another.
Western Iowa , especially , is looking towards
Omaha , nnd it presents n very inviting lldd
in which to oporato. As to prices , rope Is
down. Canned goods , suchns tomatoosconi ,
etc. , and nil California canned goods , are ad
vancing nud give promise of going still high
er. tSugurs went hack 3.40 . after the bound of
3e the week boforo. Syrups are cheap on
account of the light among the glucose maim-
fnctwors , having declined about Cc since
January 1.
It Is easy to understand , In n season llko
the present , why rubber goods , heavy Han-
ncls , etc. , should not sell well , but it would
seem as If boots and shoos ought to 'bo ' In de
mand even in an open winter. Such , how
ever , has not been tlio case , and trade Is now
very poor for the season. With a fair pros-
poet for Rood crops , trade in the early spring
nnd summer ought to bo largo. Eastern Job
bers have dropped out nnd there will bo a
better chnnco than over for Omaha. A local
Jobber remarks that the people linvo been
wearing their oldboots nnd shoes nil winter
nnd that by spring they will hnvo to buy now
ones or no barefoot.
The wholesale 'coal dealers did literally
nothing last week but Jit with folded hands
and llgurohow ninny months longer they
could continue In business with the daily ex
pense account mountingupnbovo thoprollts.
VTho weather has been most decidedly against
the coal dealers , and the pa-sent winter bus
been about the worst , for that business , over
experienced In this city. This , taken with
tbo fact that the two previous years were
not very favorable , makus It pretty hard for
dealers in this line of business. It is .said
that hoforo the summer nrrivcs several coal
ilenlers will either have gone out of business
or have nddod some special line's that will
give fair remuneration for the hibornnd capi
tal invested. Tbo season Is now too fur ad
vanced for a cold spell to give any relief tc
the wholesale trailo. About nil that acnlers
can do is to settle down to tbo summer basis ,
when little or nothing is done in a jobbing
way. Considerable stoiini co.d is handled
in the city , but this branch of the
buslnc&s is confined mostly to two or three
llrms anil the margin for prollts is too nar
row to make it any object for other llrms tc
engage in It
No ono over thinks of inontlonlng the eon
business without suylng something nbout.tlu
price of hard coal and the reason why the
cost U so great to the consumers , nnd il
would never do to break over this time-lion
oiixl custom by allowing such n sptcndU
opportunity ns the present to escape unutil

offered nnd wrongs pointed out , but the fuc
remains thatmnic * , hard coal is n luxurv ' 01115

local denier Is not making what could bo considered
sidored an umvusonablu prollt. In lookliu
over railroad rates from the east it may hi
seen now some of this cost Is unnecessarily
nut upon coal. The rate from Chicago t <

that that the ruto on hard coal from UuiTali

the competition for lake freights from llul
fnlo to Chicago , but tbo willingness ot if10
railroads to take the coal at $1.78 par toi
shows that there must bo u prollt in tic

It has been a bull week in wheat and the

great deal of uUuntlo.i. During the early
part of the week the reported drouth In Call

on Wednesday , The trading In corn was
upon the whole comparatively dull , but the
light receipts have made sellers chary of
going short big lines. Oats were very dull
all the week. The following table giving the

was unJer n grant disadvantage last wcolc
owhiR to the dumngo wrought by Sunday's
storm , which left the street with nlinost no

world. Thisstntoof nlTalrscontlnnedthrough
the greater part of the week nnd accordingly
tlio vphnno of ontsido business wn's
small. Tbo week as n whole wns
characterized by n dull market. A Wall
street authority commenting on the situation
remarks that , there nro too many signs that
the stock market is falling into a pit similar
to that which occurred in 18S4 and 18r > , when
people felt that money wns worth more than
stoolts , nnd when there wns n steady con-
stunt dribble of small lots of stork. It Is
possible that when congress adjourns , and
wo nro really safe In regard to flnimclal
legislation , there may bo n revival of inter
est , but that-is for the moment only a matter
of conjecture. On some days the dullness of
the market was quite as pronounced ns any
thing ordinarily witnessed In midsummer
nnd the Increasing ease of the money market
does not appear to result in any gront dis
position to buy stocks. The following table
will show the prices paid nt the opening nnd
nt the closing of the week , together with the
highest and lowest prices paid during the
