repeated calls elicited no reply , but Dr. Dlr-

lloor. Ho , too , had been aroused by the
thumping of the elevator and Iho culls of Iho

foot ot the grand stnlrcnso ho stepped over
to the front of the elevator , and after looking
up and down called the engineer's attention
to Butler's body , which lay lifeless in Iho
bottom of the elevator shaft.

Duo to Faulty Construction.
K. Itasmusscn , the contractor in ohargo of
thu work on thoStolo building , states that the
accident of Wednesday was duo to the faulty
construction ot the wall. The llrst crack
appeared at the top of the second story ,
wlioto a course of stone wes laid with more
than half Us thickness , extending outside of
the brickwork. This weakened the wall ,
and when the support afforded by thereof
roof was removed the wall bulged ind fell.
The fall was not occasioned by the pressure
of the jacks used in raising the roof , as stated
by u local paper. Tlio building Inspector has
also given his opinion that the accident was
duo to faulty construction , and It was some
thing that could not have been forscen and
was not duo to negligence or carelessness on
the part of ( tlio contractor.
The damage will amount to $2. > 0 , much of
which was caused by the falling brick crash
ing through the artificial stouo sidewalk Into
the area way , and smashing the wide iron
