Nowadays pretty much ovcry man , woman nnd child carries a costly Wul- thnm , nn Klgin or a cheap \Vatorbury watch. A generation or two ago , say's the Independent , watches wore only car ried by people of wealth , and the farm ers depended upon the tall clock in the hall , or upon the cheap Connecticut clock on the kitchen shelf. There was no convenient way of roculntlng time , nnd no ono know whether his clock was correct. It was Hot a day of rail roads. Now railroads run on time anfl everybody can sot his watch by railroad timo. No ono now depends upon the village bell to toll the hour of noon or 0 o'clock. The village boll was an abso lute necessity in old time's. Every oity church needed its boll also. This 'is now changed. A church boll is a survival , no longer of any use in the city und of little use in the country. A person who wants to know when it is time to go tote to church looks nt his watch and does not wuit for the boll. lie does not sot his watch by the bell , but looks at his watch to see if the boll is rlcrlit. All this means that the boll has comate to bo of no uso. It is kept out of senti ment , und not for any advantages which it sub&orvo3. In a city , or in n crowded population , or whore ft is likely to dis turb the siok , iv boll has como to bo a positive nuisance. Constantly cases occur like that just reported of the First Baptist church of West Philadelphia which has stopped the ringing of its boll out of regard for the sick. Many of our most expen sive churches nro now built without steeples , or , if the plan requires a steeple , the erection of the steeple is put off until money is uioro abundant. \Vhoro a steeple is retained it is simply u matter of ornament , a rominlsconco of the past , absolutely useless. Consistency would require that if there bo no boil there should bo no belfry , and that is what wo nro coming to. A church tower is an expensive thing , nnd the money which used to bo expended on the tower can now go into moro important Sunday school and mission rooms. The dny is fast coming whoa the church splrn , the linger pointing heavenward , will cease to exist because it will bo only n sham and pretense , indicating want does not exist and is not called for. With it is already po- ing much of the pro-omlnonco 01 the gothio architecture , as there is no longer any necessity that churches in our cities should valmy rival , with their towers , the height of the now buildings. The now buildings would tower nbovo them at their best. In the country the bell may properly survive longer. It has u pleasant sound. It is of use in time of flros ; it rings u merry chlino for wed dings or for independence day ; it tolls the people of death ; its sound does not annoy the sick as in overcrowded habi tations. But in the city and in the largo towns the boll is doomed and the stcoplo with it. "Wo may regret all thlc. The senti ment of the boll is bwoot , but there will bo a sweeter sentiment and a finer use in the mission hall and the reading-room. Arthur Ilowton in the Now York World says : What moat deeply inter cuts the uninformed mind concerning hypnotism is the oxnpgorutcdlcondltlona which nro reported. I propose to glvo my description , which will unburden this so-called weird nrt of many misrep resentations. I must Bny , however , Unit it moro than fulfills the clnlms of its exponents in that it is a useful nnd extremely powerful adjunct in minor surplcal operations , on account of the case with which local or general anes thesia may bo produced , not to mention its vnluo as a sedative nnd ncrvo re cuperator ; also it is fair to say htit mitid-rondingdouo by hypnotic subjects is sometimes almost Inexplicable. It is this hist fact which keeps the old "mag netism" nllvo. According to the best authorities there nro seven stages of hymiotls with well marked character istics. The first singe of hypnotls is tholcgor Bommell , or light sleep of Dr. Llobault. In this stage the subject is in an ordi nary do/.o , produced by a gentle nnd monotonous movement of the hands in the form of passes , ilxing the patient's eyes steadily on some bright small ob ject , thus producing slight cerebral ex haustion. There la no spcclnl peculiar ity about this stngo except that the sub ject is more susceptible to suggestion , but the least noise or brusque movement will restore his equanimity ; the subject in this condition has not lost conscious ness. ness.Dr. . Licbault rarely goes beyond this stage in his psyeho-thornputical prac tice. tice. The The second stage or somtnoll profond , is also named by Dr. Llobault of Nancy , and the special characteristics are Unit the subject is in a dcopsleep , but retains consciousness of what is going on around him. Ilo is In a state of very much in creased susceptibility to suggestion so much so , in fact , that if told that ho can not open his eyes ho can not do so His general condition is ono of natural sleep except in ordinary sleep the patient licard nothing , and a bound will awake him , whoreasin this sleep the patientif spoken to will answer , and oven loud voices will not startle him. Thla stage is induced by continuation of the method given for the first stage. The third stage of somnninbulism. This stngo is the llrst in which the sub ject completely loses control of his ac tions. In this condition ho hears and sees no ono except the operator , unless ho is placed in hat many with him. There is also in this condition n certain association of ideas , in that the somnam bulist if sot to washing hjs hands will not continue the opera tion forever , but will , after a reason able time , ask lor a towel. This condi tion is lost in deeper stages. In this condition there is a skin-deep insensibil ity to pain , and the ' pupils of the eyes are contracted ; but'the greatest peculi arity of this stage lies in the hyporos- thotlc powers induced in some subjects. It is to this peculiarity that wo owe the wonders of mind-reading , as in this con dition a good subject's houses are so in- fluitoly sharpened that they can catch a clew given by an operator which would fall to reach the sharpest unhypnotlzed person in the world. The fourth stngo is catalepsy , This is the llrst stage which Is absolutely path ological , and is not. ns in the former singes , merely physical olTecls , In this stngo the subject's muscles are all in a flaccid or wax-like condition , and the subject's limbs nro placed in position , no matter how awkward or uncomfortable it may bo , ho will retain it , while his breathing nnd pulse will remain moro regular than anyone in a normal condi tion could possibly attempt to simulate. This has been proven by the sphymo- grnphlo charts of of Tamburino and Soppili. In this stngo the occuhvr and pattollur rollox is almost entirely deli- ciont. The fifth stage is lethargy. This is a stngo which is dangerous for any one not fully competent and with long experience _ - perionco to meddle with , on account "of the acute tetanus which always accom panies it. The general idea is expressed by the Gorman investigators that these effects are produced by suggestion and imitation. This is erroneous , however , ns has been demonstrated by thoclinlquo of Prof Chnrcot a la Snltpotrioro , Paris. The special symptoms are , first , an en tirely relaxed "condition of the muscles , so that if the subject is raised up arid lot fall lie will drop in a heap , and without the least ability to hotter his position. Secondly , there is a nouro-musculnr hy- peroxcltabillty which manifests itself upon the least stimulation. For instance , * if the mnssotor or muscle of the jaw is touched it will contract as from a tetan ic spasm. The danger lies in the liability of these tetanic contractions spreading and involving some vital organ , or oven roachinir the heart. It is beyond all power of man to simulate those symp toms. 'Thirdly , association of ideas is entirely absent , and the brain is func tionally active. The sixth stage , or complete con- trncturo , is never induced except for scientific investigation or for extreme surgical operations All the muscles except those concerned in the circula tion and respiration are rigidly con tracted. All reflexes and mental phe nomena are -absent , und long contin uance in this condition , sometimes called deep trnnco , may cause the subject to pass quietly into The seventh stage , or death. For a long time a rabbit has used the den as n lair and can ho soon at almost any hour entering or leaving the cavern , Time nnd again the hunters hnvo sought to kill this particular rabbit , but it is like ilrlng at a sun ray. The little quadru ped booms qulto tame and will invite n near approach of the sportsman , but on the dlscnargo of his gun Br'or Habbit bounds oil unharmed.
