r i THE .OMAIiA DAILY BEE , .SATURDAY , DECEMBER 20 , 1890. ANOTHER DAY OF CONTENTION It is Characterized by Dreary Iteration of Alleged Assaults. MR , HITCHCOCK'S LACK OF INFORMATION. JVIr. HoRgcn Tells About the Organ- l/.itloti antl Methods of tlio Hunkers' and Huslticfls JMeti's Association. The small crowd of spectators In the real CPtnto exchange room yesterday morning grouped themselves about tbo two tables nt \vhlch evidence pro and con was being taken in tlio gubernatorial caso. Tno state case had dropped out of sight temporarily nnd will bo beard of no more until Monday morning. Mr. T. 0. Bruncr was undergoing examination during tbo entire forenoon on Mr. Boyd's sldo of the house. I'ho witness was n member of the legislature Tour years ago. and Is an ex-member of the board of public works. Ho told of the 1 quietude that provullod In tills city on the flay of election , and was prepared to contra dict the statement of anyone who stated that anarchy nnd riot or anything llko them waste to have boon found within tbo confines of the city on that day. Ho visited a Jargo number of polling places for the express purpose of seeing whetherany violence or Intimidation was re ported to , and ho described ono by ono the Situations at the various polling places as ho toutid them. At the other tnblo the first witness was Ignatius Dunn , a prohibition ox-Justlco of the , who had allowed himself to become ncace with the idea that bogus ticket ped dlers \vcio not popular nt the polls. Ho bad Been nothing , however , that would warrant tbo charges that had been made by excited correspondents of foreign newspapers. Editor Hitchcock was placed upon the stand , nnd vokcd some mysterious suspicions that JVIr , Kosuwntor bad received a cosh bcncllt from the Bankers' and business men's asso ciation , but w.is careful to innko no specifica tions. " Ho manifested an anxiety to ascertain something of the Insldo facts regard lug the association , in the interest of Broatch and Vnndorvoort. lie iiiiulo nn attemJt [ to square himself with tbo nntl-prolilbltlonists for the lukewarm support Ktvon to the nntl-prohlbitioncause in Omuha by himself nnd tbo World-Herald , nnd innnltcstcd a surprising degree of spleen because the winning Unlit uad been led by iTim Mm ! and ho wasn't In It. Editor Hitchcock was found to bo very Bhort on facts , but long on opinions nnd some of them were decid edly unique to say the least. Ho had an idea tlmt Mr. Itoscwator bad a Ooublo motive in associating himself with the Bankers' nnd business men's ' associa tion. First , ho thought that Mr. Hosowator was anxious to defeat prohibition , but llku a man with a fractious horse , wanted to drive it himself. Second , that Mr. Hosowator thought that It would give considerable polit ical prestige to his paper If lie bad control. OL'hlrd , that Mr. Uosowatcr thought that If any money was to bo expended for newspaper pur poses it would bo with Tim UEIJ. Ho sought by Implication and innuendo to create the Impression that Air. Kosowatcr had received lila prlco for the service ho rendered in tbo anti-prohibition campaign. Ho was careful , bowover , not to testify to the fact that the Ofllcors of the Bankers' and business men's association invited him to inspect their books to satisfy himself that Mr. Uosowatcr tiud been paid nothing , nnd that bo had refused to do so. Ho did not jvant such evidence , ns it would have shut Ills mouth to just such Imputations ns ho do- jlvorod himself of yesterday morning In the contest caso. After identifying a file of tha World-Herald which was offered in ovidcnco bo was allowed to go. Frank W. Bross , a Mothodlst preacher , was next allowed to rehearse his tale of woo. Ho iiad boon railed a liar and somebody had tried to Dour a lot of whisky down his throat. \Vhllo arguing with ono Pat McRinnoy , Pat threatened to smash nim into the earth if the Jirenclicr didn't ' stop shaking his list under bis ( Pat's ) nose , nnd while the preacher did ttot consider his life in danger ho did uot con- elder everything1 harmonious. Cross examined Came from Fullerton last September. Have lived in the state two years. Have been a voter for three years. 1'artlcipatcd In. ono election in Michigan. Take interest principally in the prohibitory amendment. Interest all scorned to center in that question at the last election. Tlio plan of the prohibitionists at tlio late election waste to let party stand In the background and devote - vote all efforts to the amendment. Did not of nny nioro serious demonstrations thanliioso which ho had mentioned. E. C. Hunt , a reporter for TUB BEB , was tlio last witness placed upon the stand before the noon adjournment Ho was called to identify a report that appeared in THE BUB \ of October 2(5 ( of n speech delivered by Hon. J. ti. "Wobstor at Boyd's opera house on the preceding evening , in which reference was tnado to tha action of the nrcaehers and ad- Vlslng that the churuh and state ( should bo run independent of cucli o her , etatmg further that if the preachers oo itln- ' vied to carry politics Into the pulpit thu busi ness men of the city would undoubtedly with hold their support from the churches. Tbo \vltncss testified that the report was not sten ographic , but Mr. Allen asked that it bo placed In the record. The prohibition attorney hastened the hour of adjournment , as some one whispered in his car that there was a wan in the city Vlio visited ono of the polling places on election day and could not llnd an Inde pendent ticket. The attorney swore that the man must bo found at all hazards and started Cut on n cold trail to llnd him. At the afternoon session Mr. Fred Davis , cashier of the First National bank , was the first witness called to the Powers table. Ho testified as to the account of the Bankers' and Business Men's association at that bank. Ho knew that the treasurer of that association liad un account there of several thousand dollars , but could not state how much it was. Ho was directed to produce the books of the bank in court , but refused on the ground that it would seriously Interfere with the business of the bank to remove them at that time. Ho stated that ho had no personal objection to the notaries vlsltinir tlio bank nnd looking * " over the accounts of the association. As to a copy being niado of it , ho said that ho would liavo to consult with the directors , and would plvo nn answer in the matter when court met Monday morning. With that understanding BO wai excused. 1' . B. Barnes , a carpenter In the employ oJ Slovens & Sons , and living at the corner ol Twonty-llrst and Ohio , was the next witness. Ho voted tit the corner of Twenty-sixth and Lake , nnd said that ho worked nt the polls all dnv. Ho entered the room at night to see the count , and a man wont in and insisted that ho should leave , but ono of the clerks protected him nnd put the man out. The crowd was not In sympathy with him be cause he was peddling boras tickets , and called him vile names. Tbcro were at Icasl four prohibition ticket peddlers about the polls. Saw some parties voting whom ho did not believe to bo legal voters there , but was ' deterred from challenging by fenia for hi : personal safety. .Cross-examined by Mr. Moriarty , who np pcarod for Mr. AVtmrton Saw J. L. Rico ami A. 11. Mat-ill assaulted by Hartley Boyle nut J , Guard. They were assaulted n dozer times. Witness was assaulted by Burno } ' 'v > - .lioyloand a dozen others. Was not struck ri Imt'wns taken by the collar. Know of IK . one voting who was not a qualified voter Did not challenge any ono. Did not sco nnj ono struck on the sldo of the head. Saw J li. Ulco picking himself up and getting hi ; bat. Tbo judges were disposed to protoc' : ' John French , n machinist , was next called i. Was at his own polling plnco not over five o ten minutes , nnd went to nnothor precinct ti peddle bogus tickets. Was called vile name ; nt the Sixth precinct of the Sixth ward. Wa forced from the curbstone by tbo surging o the crowd. Some unprincipled wretch spriuli led whisky on the wltuesi nnd filled hi pockots. Could not give- the iianios ot th guilty parties. A policeman was stiuidln cot more than flvo feet away , W. S. Seavoyaworn Hnvo boon chief o police of Omaha for the past three years. Al Btiloonj wcra closed on thu day of clectlo With two exceptions. One of those pnrtio was arrested nnd the ottior was not. O the day of election seventy-eight rogula policemen were detailed to guurd the forti ono polling places of the city. Tnoro wer from ono man to four men at ouch pluct More were stationed at ulacoa where out e.t breaks were liable to occur than in th suburbs. Hold twenty specials and twolv regular mou in reserve ut the police static : during the day to bo ready la cote of an emergency. Was at my odlronll day on the day of election and was in direct communication with all parts of the city by tclonltono , and it would hardly have been possible for any mob violcnco to hnvo occurred without my knowing It. Sent Ser geant Ormsby with a squad of men to pro tect Mr. 1'rtiRh when ho applied for protec tion , and the ofllccra reported ovcrythlnf ? quiet at the polling places. The mayor in formed mo by telephone that it was repotted that the olllcon at ono of the polling places in the Fourth ward were not dolnft tnclr duty , and I at once had it Investigated by Sergeant Whalen , who reported that there was no foundation for the report. Cross-examined Voted the straight ro- publlcan ticket nnd against the prohibitory amendment. Am satisfied thnt it was the quietest election I over saw In the city. Sergeant Ormsby was sworn and testified regarding the Htuto of affairs at polling places to which ho was sent on special calls , lie Invariably found It quiet , nnd parties who had claimed V > have been interfered with could glvo no Information as to those who had Interfered tvlth them , Mr. Iloggen said ho was secretary and general - oral organizer of the Bankers' nnd Business Men's association nnd rccolvca n salary of $500 a month nnd expenses , the latter amounting to between $100 nnd $260 a month. Began his work In that capacity last May and flnishcd flvo weeks ago , when ho turned over his books to the cencral committee In thoolUco of the association , room 001 , Dee buildlm ? . Know nothmgdlrectly regarding the finances but thought that perhaps f0WO ( was paid to the traveling organisers , of whom there were several. Tlicto were also ten ofllco clerks and about sixty vlco presidents In outside counties. Money was sometimes furnished these vlco presidents when thevncoded assis tance , and it was very possible that ? 15,000 was paid out in this way. Thought the personal rights league received about ! ,500 from the association. This was furnished on estimates of what they would need nnd was to pay the secretary nud men In the Held. The association condemned tlio notion of the league in endorsing IJoyd. The organizers hnd positive instructions not to dabble in politics , nnd witness believed that these instructions were obeyed. It was never officially reported to the associa tion that the league had endorsed Boyd or Beaten , and witness had merely learned It in course of conversation with Mr. Heimrod , the president of the leaguo. Understood that all candidates op posed to prohibition were endorsed , some times t.hroo or four Jfor the same ofllco. Uo- llovcd that the greater part of the personal richts' men supported Boyd or the other can didates endorsed. Local societies of foreign ers were given funds to pay the expenses of agents in bringing in parties to bo natural ized. ized.Thoro There was no agreement , expressed or Im plied , by which those naturalized parties would vote against prohibition , although it was supposed that they would do so. Thought the personal rights league indorse ment amounted simply to a recommendation. Money was contributed to the association by a few parties not living hero but who have largo property interests hero. The whisky , trust sent nothing but a lot of literature ten to fifteen years old that had been used in other states. The association pushed the circulation of the Beatrice and Grand Island debates , nnd a paper headed "Prohi bition Undesirable , " published by the associ- Doth tlio method nnd results -when Syrup of Figs is taken ; it is pleasant and refreshing to the taste , aud acts fjcntly yet promptly on the Kidneys , Liver and Bowels , cleanses , the sys- cra effectually , dispels colds , head- tches nnd fevers nnd ctnes habitual jonstipation.
