The Winter of Our Content
is the title of a recent charming paper
by that brillaut writer Charles Dudley
Warner , wherein the glories of the
Pacillo coast , us n winter resort , are
most graphically described. The Amer
ican people arc beginning to understand
that the Puget Sound country is one , of
our most splendid possessions and that
the name of the "Mediterranean of the
Pacific" is a happy title not misapplied.
In speaking of Mount Tacoma , Senator
George P. Edmunds says :
"I would bo willing to go GOO miles
again to BOO that scono. The continent
is yet in Ignorance of what will bo one
of the grandest show places as well
as sanitariums. If Switzerland is
rightly called the playground of
Europe , I am satisfied tliat
around the base of Mount Rainier will
become A prominent place of resort , not
for America only , but for the world besides -
sides , with thousands of sites for buildIng -
Ing purposes , that are nowhere excelled
for tno grandeur of the view that can bo
obtained from thorn , with topographical
features that would make the most por-
fopt system of drainage both possible
and easy , and with a moH agreeable and
health giving climate. "
Thousands of delighted tourists over
the Union Pacific ttho past year bear
ample testimony to ttho beauty and
majesty of this now empire of the Pacillo
northwest.

OMAHA'S BONUS.
They Arc Not AlTcotcil by tlio Failure
of S. A. Kcati & Co. of Chicago.
TUB BEE'S telegraphic columns yesterday
contained the announcement of the suspension
of the banking house of S. A. Koan of Chi
cago.
This concern had previously handled bonds
of thta city , and accordingly City Treasurer
Rush was asked whether the failure In any
manner affected the finances of the town.
"Not n cent's worth. " was the reply. "Wo
ara high and dry. On October HI I sold S.
A. Kenn & Co. , $176,000 worth of bonds at a
flguru of fi8 ( in excess of that offered by
Blake , Bruce < fc Co. of Boston. I forwarded
the bonds to the Chemical National bank of
New York. It is to them I send bonds and
order them held in trust until they are paid
for. Kcan delayed In taking the bonds , for
several reasons. In the meantime , however ,
ho was advertising to sell the bonds and I
know it was only In that way that ho could
expect to handle them. I then wrote to
Blake , Bruce & Co. of Boston , telling them
they might have the bonds at their llguros ,
they being the second highest , at SOS less
than Kcan had offered , and the bonds were
accepted. "

The Shining
Of the old world , soldiers , statesmen
and men of letters , all write in the most
extravagant praise of our facilities for
travel in America. And wo are entitled
to the praise. On every English line
there is the same old dusty lunch counter -
tor , known by all tourists for those many
years. Not even a drink of water ; nor a
crust of bread to bo had on the train.
No wonder our transatlantic friends ex
press amazement when they sit down tea
a hotel dinner on one of the palace
dining cars on the Union und Southern
Pacific railways an arrangement which
is the most perfect in the country today.

A BONDED TvAUJEHOUSE.
Ono of the Needs of Oinnlm'H
Men nt I'rcsent.
The attention of Collector Alexander was
called to the statement In TUB BBC'S Wash
ington letter Wednesday to the effect that an
effort was being made to establish n bonded
warehouse at Omaha and that the details
wcro being effected.
"Yes , " said Mr. Alexander , "I have been
trying for the past six months to have n
bonded warehouse established at this point ,
but the trouble has been that the government
requires a bonded warehouse to occupy an
entire building , so as to bo separate from any
Interference by outside parties. I think this
objection has been overcome. Mr. Bushman ,
who Is erecting a brick warchousoon Leaven-
worth street , between Tenth and Eleventh.
has tbo first story completed , and has built it
in accordance with suggestions from me ,
making one portion entirely separate from
the balance ol the building by means of solid
brick walls , so that there is but ono entrance
to the portion designed for a warehouse.
This entrance is convenient of access from
tbo railroad tracks and this oftlco will have
charge of It.
"Thoro Is a pressing necessity for a bonded
warehouse at thts'polnt. There has always
been difficulty In getting the owner of any
desirable building to bond his entire building
in return for the small revenue ho would do-
rlvo from It from storage fees. If the pres
ent scheme succeeds It will enable Omaha
wholesalers to buy goods in largo quantities
and store them In the warehouse until they
need them , paying the duties on tbo goods as
thcv are removed.
"Air. Bushman has gone to Washington to
advocate the scheme and complete all tbo
arrangements. "

No improvement have been so marked ,
so signally perfect in attainment , in the

which have been introduced In transcon
