A scheme to blow n safe at Holdrcgc , Neb. rvns discovered by the vlgllanco of Sheriff D'JJelll In watclilnff the prisoners in the Council UlnlTs Jill. Uno of the prisoners , tvho gives Ills name as H. W. llawloy , has lately been trying to fcnil some letters out of the Jail to some of his pals , Thcso letters ivoro sclycd , nnd they contain some InterestIng - Ing reading. Hawlcy was nrrestcd hero a few months aj-o. while In tbo very act of burglarizing Ilndollct's grocery store , on Broadway. Itcali/lnR the fnut that the evidence ngulnst him was such that ho could not save himself , If tried in court , ho began his ma nipulations to cdunpo justice In sorno other way. In the captured letters to his pnl ho reveals hh plans contldcntlnlly. Ho re quested that his comrade procure for him two kinds of odd , which ho said ho needed to take the temper out of the steel bars. Thcso bars ho had examined evidently with the eye of nn expert , nnd he expressed the opinion that they wcro not chilled. Ho was very particular about the kind of acids to bo pot for him nnd described them minutely , lie ulso wanted four saws , the ( Inscription of which ho also gave In detail , and the make. Ho wanted them very line toothed , as it was necessary to do the work quietly. In making tha request of his friend to furnish htm with hcse means of escape he said thnt ho could not hope tcr get cleared in court , nnd that ho was In a des perate strait. Ho also outlined the manner In which tbo articles could bo got to him. Too saws were to bo dlaced in a long plug of tobacco , In which n hole had been bored to rccvlvo thorn , The acids were to DO packed in a bag of smoking tobacco. Ho directed that the stamp over the mouth of tbo bag bo Btcamed , so that it could ho removed without breaking , then when the bottles wcto packed Inside the stamp could bo replaced , and thus no suspicion would arise , llawloy wrote many other Interesting things , among1 which \vcro his opinions of the J'ottawattamlo county jail , which ho pronounced asanvthliitf but n delightful resort , under the r"r ° 90nt management , as it gave llttlo opportunity for escape. Ho ejected strongly to the re volving feature , ns It revolved too often to permit him to work on the bars , except at night , and then it was dimcult to do such work without the nolso behiR heard. The most sensational revelation in the let ters was the plan to break into a bank or loan office nt Holdrcgc , Neb. Ho explained to his friend that ho hnd intended to work" this scheme himself , so soon as ho found a fellow to help him , but that whisky had upset his plans , for while in Lincoln , planning on this Holdregc trip , ho got full , nnd was himself "touched , " losing nil his money. If it hnd not been for his being short bo said ho would not have thought of breaking Into Badollet's , for there wasn't enough In thls-job to pay for the risk. Ho didn't happen to coino across anybody .that ho knew , and thus not being1 able to get help ho broke into this store , just to get a starter If ho could. Situated as ho now was , there was no immediate prospect of his being able to work the job at Holdrcgo , and so ho tunica It over to his friend , with such Information ns ho had in the matter , nnd recommended thnt his friend work it. If ho mndon success nnd pot the "stuff" ho would expect to have apart of it , In return for the Information thus clven. If his friend could in this way ralso him some money , before his time for trial came , ho might bo able to llx some of the witnesses and thus get off. If not , ho would have to go across tha .stnto. Ho enclosed a roughly drawn diagram , showing the location of several buildings nnd streets In Holdredgo , accom panied by a description of Just where the building stood and the location of tlio safe , which were to bo broken Into. Thosafowns described with nnmo of make , etc. , and tbo assurance given that It would not tnko inoro than half an hour "to knock It off. " The building referred to was but one block from tbo depot , aud diagonally opposite the hotel , and it was Indicated on the map by the word "box. " Ho advised his friend to "clear your V -hands ol everything but the stuff itself , " nnd warned him not to attempt to carry any tools on himself. Ho further informed him thnt the man who owned the "box" boight notes , etc. , and that ho kept from $1,500 , to $3,000 in cash in the safe all the timo. Hawtoy signed his name ns "Red , " but gave strict Instructions to lih friend to write to him under the nnmo of Hawley , Ilo said that letters going out of the jail wcro all ox- nminrd , so ho had to sneak these out , but let ters coming to the jail wcro not opened. In ono of these respects Hawley seems to have been a little inlstiikcn.rtncl . tbo correspondence being oOlclally captured , the "box" nt Hoi- dredge win not worked , and the expected wealth did not como to his relief , Hnwloy's time for trial came yesterday , and neither acid , money or saws had arrived , Thcro seemed no way of escape , BO ho pleaded guilty , and threw himself o'n the tender - dor mercies of the court. His sentence will not ho pronounced for a few days yet. Gypslo carnival nt Trinity fair Saturday night , J''lno IIol idny Presents. Yesterday afternoon about 3 o'clock the people on tlic streets In the vicinity of No. 3 cngino house on the corner of Main nnd Bry ant street * were trentcil to u spectacle that c.uiscJ checks to blanche and hearts to ccaso beating for an Instant. From the top ot the dizzy tower that over looks the crcoic n man hnd suspended himself by aslnglostrnndoC cord Unit looked to bo about the size of binding Uvlnc. Ills feet wore testing on the window .sill of ono of the llttlo windows fifty-two feet nbovo the pave- mont. Ho stood for sovor.xl moments - waving ing his hnnds nnd gesticulating. When the attention of everybody within sltfht had been attracted , the man stepped off from his frail porch and bctrnn to deiceml , paying out the cord from one hand while waving the other. Ho went down slowly fora distance ot two feet and then the cord snapped. Ho turned half way over , as ho Hashed downward lllio a meteor and striicK on his Lcau nnd shoulders on a htt lo shed roof nt the foot of the toivernnd disappeared from sight. Instantly a great crowd collected. The door to tno shed w an locked by a padlock and one of the firemen hail the only hoy. It was hurriedly procured and the door opened. Instead of Hading the man crushed beyond recognition , they found him sitting up rub- bin ) ; hlrf head and looking around In a dazed dortof manner. 'JL'ho mifui'tunato man was J , C. Terry of Tyndall , S. D. Ho Is In the city for the pur- poboof exhibiting n patent llro escape , u , sim ple ilcvlco known as the Halght 6scipo , In vented by a South Dakota man , Mr. Terry has been engaged by Ilalght to go around the country and exhibit his escape. Ho arrived In the city Monday aftcrnopn , and yesterday ho exhibited his apparatus nt the llro houses. Ho concluded that the hlph tower of No. U offered as line nn opportunity as could bo desired to exhibit the life-saving device , und at 3lfi ; ho ho attached the hook to the window sill of the upoer window. The apparatus used was a llttlo model Intended to show ttio principle nnd was not designed for use. It consisted of it friction block about two Inches square , which is less than half the si/oof the article intended for actual use. Instead of a rope such as commonly uscd hohad run a com mon sash cord through the block nnd noslred to show that even with that little device , small enouirh to bo carried in a man's pocket. ho could safely make the descent from n tall building. "When ho threw Ids weight upon the cord It gnvo way where it run across tbo sharp cornurot tbo window sill and lot him fall a distance of fifty tcot , The only thiiitf that saved him from instant death wai the shed roof , which was composed - posed of inch lumber grooved tnpcthev. ; When ho struck the spring of the lumber pnvtinllybrokotboforcoof his fall. Nine of the boards six Inches wld , were broken to gether with the 12x4 sounllliiK tbnb supuortcd them. Immediately beneath him In the tool shed was several largo coils of wire thnt had been unbound , and Ihcso hulprd to break the fall by acting lllco n spring mattress , The man was helped out und was nblo to walk into the onglno houso. Dr. Cleaver was called by tolcpbono and rendered him medical' service. His face was badly cut and bruised and tlioro was scarcely a point whore the end of a finger could be placed that did not show an abrasion of the skin. One finger on the loft hand was broken , as was also one of the floating ribs. These , with the exception of a scalp wound till inch long , wcro the extent of his Injuries unless some internal trouble do- vclons that Is not now apparent. * Mr. Terry is apparently a very In telligent man of about thirty-five years of ago , Ho explains that the ac cident was duo to tbo deception practiced upon by a merchant in Ncola , la. , of whom ho purchased tbo roll of sash cord , lie is nearly blind and could not sec that the ord was thin and not what ho asked for. He says ho bos frequently made descents of 100 feet with u common sash cotd. Terry was formerly a physician , but was compelled to abandon practice on account of lulling cyeslcht. The only thing ho seems to suffer from at the prcsent'tinio is the chagrin over the fniluro of his lire escape to work properly. To convince tlio reporters that It wo * perfectly safe and reliable ho was very anxious to make another descent , crippled ns ho was , asking only to bo assured thnt ho bo given apiccoof sash cord that was not rot- ton. Ho was dissuaded from makingnnothor nttnmpt upon tbo pledge of tha reporters that he should be given a "square deal.
