In referring to the adoption of the resolu
tions , Mr. Holt said there should bo enact
ing from this metropolis of the atuto some
union of action on the part of the churches of
God against the gigantic evil of intemperance ,
A united action would give courage to the
brothers of the state who -were in arms
against the evil. The time , ho said , had
comowhenit was necessary for the advo
cates of temperance and prohibition to touch
shoulders nnd move forward in the work.
"It Is known , " said Mr. Holt , "that the
registry lists nro being copied by us and every
voter is being seen quietly and an effort is
being made to have each voter brought into
line in this great c.iuso. H takes work but
we must do it. "
Then Mr. Holt offered some suggestions as
to the conduct ot the campaign. Ho reiterated
some of tlio old charges of irregularity in the
matter of voting in Douglas county. "It was
charged nt Lincoln , " ho said , "and conceded
there that last year there were 5lUJ ) Illegal
votes cast in Omaha. Brethren , let ns get
into the work. Let us have a reliable man nt
each polling place who will remain at the
polls until the last vote is counted. Wo need
your help , Coino out , bo bravo and demand
that this city bo honest in its suffrage. "
The expected discussion on the prohibition
issues did not materialize and Mr. Shinn's
motion that Mr. Holt's resolutions bo
adopted wus carried without any expression
for or against.
The union then recurred to Dr. Jhiryca's
suggestion on the advisability of organi/.ing
the college graduates of tlie city nnd after
some discussion a committee , consisting of
Ituvs. Cr.me , Lamar , Duryea , fcjcott and
Lcard , was appointed to cull a meeting for
tlie purposes of organisation.
Then .Mr. Holt talked prohibition a whllo
longer. Ho deplored the fact that the amend
ment people were behind in the rent account
for their headquarters anil that they wcro
generally hard up for funds and needed finan
cial support very bailly indeed. Ho urged
the ministers to take especial interest in the
matter of collections to help thocanso along.
While Mr. Holt was resting from hlb effort
the union proceeded with its regular busi
ness by election of oflicers for the ensuing
six months.
Dr. P. S. Merrill was chosen president ,
Hev. P. W. Foster secretary and lr. Duryea ,
Uov. W. , f. Harshn and Hev. C. N. D.iWbon
as an executive committee.
JSlr. Holt then rnado his closing prohibition
speech. Ho said the amendment people wcro
going to Insist upon a fair election. They had
men at work looking upon the registration
and woula prosecute perjured voters to the
extent of the law. This would tuko money
anil ho wanted the brethren to bo liberal nnd
Industrious in their efforts to secure funds.
Ho closed by laying out : i plan ofvork to bo
followed by the ministers on November' ' , the
amendment lixcd day.
The meeting closed with the amendment
that nt the November session IJr. A H. Thaln
