THE CONDITION OF TRADE ,
A Week of Verj 1'air Business for Omaha
Jobbers Generally.
IT IS UNUSUALLY GOOD IN SOME LINES ,
JLiumlcr I'iperlcnccs a Itrvlval Dry

ccrlrH Ocnernlly Sntlnfactory
The l'ruTlion ilarkct.
Another week has passed , during which
Omatm Jobbers hnvo generally experienced a
very fair trade , and lu some lines anunusu-
nllv good trade for the season of the jear.
'I ho lumber trade , which has been Inclined
to drag during some weeks , experienced a rc-
vlvnl last week and dealers were well pleased
\vltli tliclr sales. The fact that priics are
linn nnd that there is no Immediate prospect
of a decline may have induced omo to place
their orders sooner than they would hnvo
done had the market given any indication of
going lower.
The trade In dry goods was , as some
dealers expressed It , "better than they
could really expect , iho cool weather
lias tended to hurry up late
onion , The fear of an advance on some
llnw of goods owing to the Increased tariff
may luuc had the same effect. Thus far the
local Joobcrs have not made any material ad
vance in prices , as they had large stocks on
liand. but as they sell these down prices will
lie very apt to stiffen It Is expected that the
fortunes of the market will rise in Inverse
proportion to the fall of the mercury Cold
untumiul weather Is the thing most desirable
nt this stage of the game , nnd If it makes Its
advent on schedule time nnd display ? a
moderate degree of regularity the closing
clavs of the fall campaiim In the Jobbitig trade
will undoubtedly bo as relatively prosperous
as wns Its Initial experience.
Not much change is noted In the grocery
market. The demand has been fair and the
jobbing trade generally In a satisfactory con
dition. At eastern points the "fall" tr.ido In
r.taplo groceries progresses fairly. Some of
the older operators , comparing ulth their
earlier experiences , arc Inclined to look upon
matters as rather slow-paced for this season
of the \car ; but the moro advanced methods
f tendering supplies through mall nnd ct-
jireis samples. the uniform and rea
sonable cost of the increased trans
portation facilities , and In many cases
the methods In vogue through
which goods are sold forcontmuous shipment
from piimary points to the interior custom
simply multiply the channels through which
dependent custom Is supplied , and a concen
tration of the movement Into one body , arc
confining It to a few weeks of swinging and
oppressho animation , would probably as
tonish and confuse these uho occoslonnllv
Eccin to long for old fashioned methods Cof
fee , of nil the staple articles , remains open to
criticism for rather extreme cost , hut the
ivst of the list scorns available at reasonable
enough price on the relative merits of supply
ar.d demand.
The only item in the produce market re
quiring special mention Is the glut In the
poultry tn.irket. Although very discour
aging reporti have been sent out Into the
countrjchickens have been rushed In much
faster than they were wanted. A great
znanv h.id to bo earned over , there being no
ale for them even at extremely low prices.

P , C. McHugh , formerly of the firm of Mc
Hugh & Mockby , told a BEE reporter that
about six weeks ago , during his absence , his
partner gave Alex Mclntosh a number of
bills to collect. Amonp them was a bill of
$12.00 , which Mclntosb. collected and pock
eted the proceeds. '
"It bill " said Mr. "
was a , McHugh , "that
should not have been given out for collection ,
as cither of the firm could have collected it
easily. Before Mclntosh went away I got
the uncollcctcd bills from him and he ad
mitted to having collected one and spent tbo
money. Ho promised to loivo $ 45 , one-half
the amount , at a lawjer's office for me , re
taining the balance tor tns services. Ho
failed to do this , lion ever. I know that ho
was hard up. and we gave him tbo accounts
to collect to help him out. I also knew that
ho Had been drinking pretty freely , and suppose -
pose that accounts for his defection.

BOSTOX , Mnss. , Oct. 18 , About 6 o'clock
this morning Daniel H. Wilson , aged fort-
three , an employe of the Adams cipress
company , shot and killed his wlfo whllo she
was in bed. Ho then sent a bullet through
his left breast , inlllctlni ? a probably fatal
wound. It is thought despondency , caused
by bis illness , was the cause of the act.
Wlson was taken to the hospital , uherc it
was thought ho had n slight chance for re
covery. At the hospital Wilson made a
statement , in which ho said no acted under
the impulse of tbo moment and must have
been crazy. Then , seeing what ho had done ,
ho decided to kill himself. Wilson's wlfo
was twenty years old.

Building Operations in Oimlia.
In our Issue of September 27 we pupllshoj
1 table of the compiratlvo hulldlntr opera
tions of hrfre cities , civiiiK the average cost
of buildings erected duilng ISsO , says the
American Contiactor. In this table Omaha
appeared as tlio third from the lowest on Ilia
list
To this our Omaha correspondent object-i
and gives the following explanation.
' The building interests and prosperity of
Omaha have suffered n prcat Injustice
through the article recently published in tlio
New York Sun and in jour Journal of Sep
tember 27.
Omaha was shown as having the lowest av
enigo. ( Cleveland was given as lowest J
This Is iui-orrect.
Unfortunately the city Is cursed with a
building law which should long since have
passed into innocuous dcauotuilu. It Is the
notorious "fee system " The amount of this
fee is tjunsed Upon the c.ipocte.1 cost of build
ings , furnKbed by the applicant for penult.
The result Is that a minimum Jlyure Is usually
ghen.
According to the Vmciican Contractor the
total number of buildings erected iu Omaha
is placed at 'J 'Ja , total co > t of nine at flW3-
15 , and the uveraijo cost Is shown by fl.'stK ' ! .
The fco system it to blame for this odious
stiouing.aud u movement Is ou foot Ui abolish ,
the same.
TIIK Osivn Bnc In commcntlnj ; upon this
matter says the ligurei ( flven correspond
\ \ ith the annual report of the superintendent
of building * . butdoRs not Ktve the statement
of the Kupurintendcnt that tlio csllinatos nro
bolovv the actu il cost by nt least i- > per cent.
The Eco. compiled a table , sofiiriiifr Its
flpures from contractors and owners of the
buildings whllo underway , covered a period
of three months , and thus obtained the cost
of tho'J,4'.i5 buildings as < 7 , ( > iH,5W5 , or an nve-
raze cost of ( ! , $ & , which would place Omaha
ahead of St. Louis In average fust of build-
in ps erected.
In compiling peucral tables , the ofllclal
records arc and must be the basis of f.icU
and If a city desires to bo rightly represented
she should see to U that her oftlcial records
pre > cnt us uearly as ( KMslblo the title facts.
