ells in Harpor'a YouftbPeople. . The
jthor boys did not ask ; Jio\v \ ho came to
know Us name or wlioro lie got it boys
novornslc anything that .it would bovoll \

theory and Ills furthoi ; fttatotncnt that It
was ola , mildness singularly adapted to
learners vithout misgivings. The boy
was hlmsolt chowinp Alporously on n
largo quid , and launcilngtho { juice from
his Ups right .and left like
a grown person , and my boy
took ns largoabito as his benefactor
bade him. LEo found it as swot as ho
had boon told it was , nnd ho ac
knowledged the aptness of its name ot
molasses tobacco. It seemed lo him n
golden opportunity to ncquiro anoblo
liablt on easy terms. Ho let the q.uid
rest in his cheek , as ho hud seen men do ,
when ho was not crushing it between
his teeth , and for some momoats ho
poled his plunk up and down the canal
boat with asonso of triumph that noth
ing marred.
Then all of a sudden lie began to feel
pale. The boat scorned to bo going
round and the sky wheeled overhead.
The sun was dodging around very
strangely. Drops ol sweat "hurst from
the "boy's forehead ; ho let fall his polo
and said that ho thought ho would go
homo. The follow -who gave him
the tobacco began to laugh and
the other fellows to meek , but
my "boy did not mind them. Somehow ,
bn < Hil not know how. ho trot onto ! the
canal boat and started homeward , but
at every step the ground rose a3 high as
his knees before him , and then when ho
got Ills foot hiifh enough and began to
put it down , the ground was not there.
Howas deathly sick , ns ho reeled and
staggered on , and whoa ho reached
homo ho showed himself , white and
haggard , to his frciffhtencd mother , ho
had scarcely strength enough to gasp
out the confession of his atttoxnpt to
rotrivo the family honor by learning to
chev tobacco. In another moment na
ture came to his relief , and then ho fell
Into a deep sleep , which lasted the whole
afternoon , so that it Beemod to him the
next day when ho Aroko up , glad to find
himself alive , If not very lively.
Perhaps he had swallowed some of the
poisonous juice of the tobacco ; perhaps
it had acted upon his bruin without that.
His father mndo no very close innuirics
into the facts , nnd ho did not forbid him
the use of tobacco. It was not necessary ;
in that ono little experiment ho had got
enough fora Avhole life time. It shows
that nf tor all a boy is not so liard to sat
