The motor train added another victim to its

Frank Fernandcs , a moulder In the Union
Pacific shops , and living at 2421 Parker
street , was coming down town on train No. 1
of the llanscoin park line , which was in
charge of Conductor B. F , Bonbow nnd
Motorman Wilson. As the train reached
Capitol avenue , Femnndcs , who was standIng -
Ing ou the front platform of the trailer , sig
naled the conductor to stop. The conductor
signaled his motorman and then applied the
brake.
Fernandas did not wait , but stepped off ,
nnd In doing so , slipped and slid under thu
car , between the wheels. A passenger
grabbed him , but before the unfortunate
man could bo pulled out tbo rear trucks had
passed ever both legs , breaking and fearfully
crushing the right one between the knco nnd
anltlo. The left leg was terribly mangled ,
the llesh being torn lose from the bone , but
nelthor of the bones were broken.
A crowd soon congregated , the patrol
wnpon was culled , anil after belnar placed in
It , Fernnndes was taken to his home , where
a physician amputated the right leg , Just

the threatened carpenters strlko of May I
may bo arrested. President Goldie of the
Carpenters' nnd Builders' association Is dls-
posed to think , however , that the recent semi-
ofllclal communication to the executive com
mittee from the carpenters' council , which
purported to bo a mo vi'incnt to ward the settle
ment of the strlko , was not In good faith.
The council offers the ultornatl of employ
ing union or non-union men ns they choose ,
and provides that wages shall bo llxud by ar
bitration , the maximum to bo10 cents an
hour , olgnt hours to constitute a day's ' work.
A committee of the bosses will meet n coin-
initteoof the mou In January to agree upon
wages nnd bom's for the year , the strlko
against the old bosses to bo called off at once
and the bosses to stop advertising for outsldo
carpenters.
" \Vo \ expect the strJko nnd perhaps n great
deal of harassing from the carpenters' coun
cil , but our organization will pull through ell
