The difficulty which Omnlm lias experi enced for some years past "in obtaining a force of letter carriers suttlclently largo to properly attend to tbo delivery of mall seems In a fitlr way to bo overcome because of tbo showing made by the recent census. It has seemed almost impossible to con vince the postofllco department of the Im portance of this city and the growth which It litu enjoyed , As a consequence , when Postmaster Gallagher's request for addl- llonnl clerical nnd carrier asslstnnco was sent to that department It hns been Ignored en tirely or grunted in so niggardly a manner as to t > o most nnnoyIng. The cnnler force of this city comprises forty-live regulars und live substitutes. Nevertheless , there are parts of the city which cannot bo reached by these men. Den ver , with a smaller population , but oeemluirly with a higher standing In tbo estimation of the officials nt Washington , has a inrricr body of forty-sovui men , whtlo tbu dis tanced , windy town on the Kaw , Is served by a force of tlfty-flvo men. The impression has prevailed In Washing ton that Oinnba wns a city ot not morn tbnn 50,000 people. Clarkson , however , has done something to remove this im pression , because , being u western man , ho knew whereof ho spoke. The late census , snowing that this city has n population of nearly HU.OOO , will give Omaha the standing of n metropolitan city and hereafter cntitlo her to moro liberal at tention from the department. As n m.ittcrof fact , she ) has been entitled to this recognition since she attained u population of 75,000 , but the fact of her attainment could not bo ofllclally brought to thoattcntlon of the postal authorities. This difilculty will soon bo overcome by the report of Mr. Porter , superintendent of the census , upon which , it Is presumedthe , postal department will act at once and give Omaha the letter carriers und clerks to which she Is entitled. It Is thought that the Nebraska delegation in Washington will not wait for the onlcinl report of Mr. Potter but induce him to certify Onmlm's population to the postal department so that the relief may bo afforded us soon as possible. The iiiL-rcaso of the number of carriers will bo attended also by the Increase of salaries. Under the metropolitan standing , letter cnrilors who have served faithfully for ono year will bo paid ? l,000 a year , while under the present regime they receive only $350. A Spartan Postmaster Who Took the Wronjf Koiul to Wealth. Neal "Walters , who has been postmaster nt Sparta , In this state , for the past seven or eight years , was arrested Tuesday by Deputy Marshal Hepflngcr nnd brought to this city , Ho had a preliminary hearing be fore United States Commissioner Anderson. Walters was charged with defrauding the government by making false entries of the number of stamps sold and can celled by him , thereby Increasing his salary. His method , it is alleged , was to buy largo quantities of stamps and send them to mer chants In Omaha and Chicago in exchange for goods of various descriptions. Ho would then enter thcso stamps on Ids report us having been cancelled in the regular way. Occasionally ho got bolder and reported ttio total cancellation to bo in excess of tbo total stamps sold. A plan was devised by n postoftlco inspec tor whoso suspicions had been aroused by thcso returns. Postmasters on cither sldo of Sparta kept an account of the letters from the latter place for several months. "When sufficient evidence had been secured , Mr. Walters was pounced upon. At llrst ho de nied the charges but when confronted with the evidence ugulnst him , ho bad nothing further to say. Ho waived examination nnd was bound over to the next term of court , Dr. Birnoy cures hay fever. Bee bldg. T.iIS CONTHACT tiET. The New Boyd Opcru House to Be Com pleted Next July. They ran down the drive-way , got out of the pack ing houses of Swift & Co. , nnd , becoming en raged , cleared the ynrds. Ono vicious nnl- mnl made a charge on the horse attached to the brick and mortar clcvatorof the no w smoke stock.
