MOIITUAKY. Charles II. Dewcy. A telegram was received from Battle Crock Mich. , yesterday afternoon , conveying tie startling thotigh not unexpected Information that Charles II , Dctvey was deaJ , the end being reached at 12i4 ( ) o'clock. j\lthougl tie news was received late In the afternoon , thcsad Intelligence was soon the talk of the street. Mr. Klerstciul , in a telegram to THE BEE , stated thJt " .Mr. Deweykeptup his courage until this morning , when ho gave ur > the bat tle and sild he was willing to go , Dr. Col- man xvasat hli bedside till the end. " IN'O man in Omaha was better known than Charles IF. Dewey.nndtho announcement of his death will cause universal rcrret atnonjr his business oequalnUinces and hislarpc array of personal friends in Omabaandall over the counti-j * . It hna been known for some weeks that Mr. Dowey's condition was such as to precludes any hope of his recovery , nnd his friends were in a measure prcptred for the announce ment of his demise. Two months ago 31r. Dcivey went to the Sanitarium at Battle Creek , Micli. , hoplny , through the treat ment in practice there , to secure a res toration of his strength , which had been impaired Jor a number of years. Ho was temporarily benefited , but the hoped for strength was not g.iincJ. Ills trouble , which was of the stonuch , became. aggravated about four weeks ago. and from that time until his death his oDly nourish ment was of a liquid character. For a time it almost seemed as If Mr. DJWCJ : would cheat the grim destroyer , but It was not to bo ; his malady had taken too firm a hold upon his system to be shaken off. He was rational to the moment of his death , and innde arrangements for the disposition nnd management of his busi ness matters. Mrs. Dcwey and W. I. Klerstcad , one of Mr. Dcwcy's business part ners , were -\rith tlui at the time of his death. Mr. Bewev was bom In Kcnnebec county , Elaine , and lived during his boyhood days in Ohio. He Avas one of the first rneu to rus h to California in ISl'J in search of a fortune In the gold fields which had Just been dis covered. He spent seven years in California and on the Pacific coast nnd met with tbo usual ups and downs of an adventurer's life. In ISM Mr. Dcwf > y went to Sacramento , where-ho met Mr. A. J. Simpson , another 'of Omaha's old settler's , and they formed a co partnership In the carriage business. Tbey remained together for upwards of two years and a half , when Mr. Dewey returned east , locating in Indiana , where- engaged in the furuituro business. The schooling ho re ceived there proved most valuable to him in after years , when the firm of XJcwey & Stone , now the Dewov & Stone furniture company , vas organized in Omaha. During tlio spring of 1SG3 the deceased started for Denver with an ox team and passed through. Omaha , pitch Ing his camp on tbe corner of Fifteenth street and Capitol ave nue. .Afterrestingforashorttiinshc'ro hocon- tlnued his trip west through Montana and Idaho , afterward returning to Denver , where he opened afurxlturehouse. Ho finally returned to tlo cast and , after living a time In Tennessee and lowu , drifted to Omaha In 16 > i5. At that time tbo Union Pacific road was being hullt and Omaha was the liveliest cf all the frontier towns. With a teen busi ness foresight , Mr. Dewey saw In lae rude frontier town the. foundation of a great com mercial metropolis , nnd ho invested all his money , less than$2,000 , in the furniture busi ness. Soon after opening the establishment he associated ivith hlnisolf.Mr. E. L. Stone as a. business partner. He lived to see his small Investment grow Into ono of the largest and most successful establishments of the kind in the United States. Mr. Dewey had a natural taste for travel , a tastotbat he gratified , after his success in business warranted It , to an eiteut that gave him the title oftho great Onwhn traveler. " Ho went toEuropo for his health in 1870 and matloa tour of the continent , and since that time has -visited altnoit every place of note in the known world. He was. in Paris during- part of tbe Franco-Prussian war and watched with a deep interest the stirring evcuts of that period , Ho was in Paris again in ISTts nsouoof the United States commissioners , appointed by President Arthur to the world's exposition. Ho tooh a trip around the world in 1SS1 , sailing from San Francisco , and from that time to his death traveled almost con tinuously. Ho was planning another trip around the world when ho was taken with his last illuess. Ho was a staunch republi can , but took no active part in politics. He was married to Miss Hell at Belleville , O. , In I860. Mrs. Dcwoyandau adopted daugh ter , Miss Hello Dewey , who is at Xantasket Beach , survive him. No estimate of Mr. Dewcy's character Is needed. Ho was almost universally known In Omaha and Nebraska as a liberal , enter- prislnpr , independent , manly nun. Schlagel says that ono commences to die from the inside , but this is not true of the man who Is now traveling upon his longest Journey. Ho commenced to die from the out side , for Ills heart was always young , Ho was always hopeful and ever inclined to look upon the briclit side of things when bis phy- slciuns know that hope had long sinvo de parted. Dr. Victor Coffman nnd Mr. Kierstead v left for Battle Creek several days ace to nccom- nany Mr. Dewey home. Dr. Coffman belicv. lug that a euro might still be effected could ho ho brought bach to the city ho loved so well Rut before the party started home- ward death came to the relief of tbo patient , gentle sufferer and there was no wed of pro longing the battle longer. The body will arrive nt 9:30 a. m. Friday , funeral arrangements not having yet be n finally completed.
