IhC Pack This Year About OO.OOO
More than Linst Year.
The salmon fishing season in Oregon closes
today , and lu a few clays more the hum and
bustle in the canneries will cease , says the
Portland Oregonian. The Washington law-
allows flshinc to continue ten days longer ,
but it is doubtful whether many more will be
caught , and by Saturday all canneries on
both sides of the river will , in all probability ,
be closed.
As a reporter strolled into the St Charles
yesterday afternoon he met the Orepon tri-
umvlrata of fish commissioners , Messrs.
Thompson , Campbell and Reed. Their esti
mate of the season's pack is from : b3.KK ( ) to
3W.OOO cases. This , of course , means Chinook
salmon only. Last j car's pack was 325,000
cases , so that tbo linures show quito a
marked development of one of Oregon's
greatest industries. /
Columbia river salmon are already famous
the world over , and the industry is one of
which the state can well feel proud and one
that should be protected and fostered with
Jealous care. Columbia river salmon com
mands the highest price In the fish market ,
and its superior quality and liarorwcll entitle
it to this mark of preference.
Operations at the Clackamas hatchery will
commence In earnest about Scptetnbt-r 1 , nnd
if all fishing is stopju-d now , as it should be ,
there will be a fair supply of fish to com
mence with. The benefit of the hatchery to
the salmon industry of the Columbia cannot
bo over-cstimaU-d , atid everything should bo
done to facilitate a large turn-out of fish from
this source.
If there is a peed run of salmon in the
Cluckamas this year the fish commissioners
will transport about a millinn cfgs to the
branch hatchery at Warrendalc.
