of complaint. One is that the work was lot

failing to do the work within the hpecilled

that the grade established Is too steep and
the street drains so much territory that the

the soil , the busb , OL- the tree , most of
what is necessary for his life. Thiit is
not si dream of futurity ; It is becoming-
u fact of modern life. Indeed , nothing
can to nioru instructive on this account
than u visit to the islands of Jersey and
Guernsey , such as I recently mndo. It'
Klvesonoa concrete idea of what the
world is rapidly coming to in the way of
culture under glass.
The island of Guernsey has to nourish
ltOO , ! souls on each square milo , and has
u good deal of unproductive soil. Guern
sey , like the suburbs of Paris , ia a land
of market gardening , wlilch has devel
oped of late into greenhouse culturo.
All over the island , especially in the
north , wherever you look , you
tee greenhouses. They rise amid
the Holds and from behind the
trees ; they ai-o piled up ono on
another on the stcop slopes of the hills
facing the hurbor. The oi-lyin of tlii.s
newuopnrturo was tlio raiding of granos ,
which was started some thirty years ago
by a few enterprising men. At probont
Guernsey exports every year about llvo
hundred tons of grapes , which represent
a incnoy value of ! flir ! > ,000 , tit the low
average price of 18 cents n pound , However -
over and that is the uhlof point
grapes are no longer Ilio most important
crop of the Guernsey anil Jersey green
houses. And when I walked , through
these glass-roofed kitchen gardens ,
which do not know what failure meanc ,
and which yield cropaftor crop through
the spring1 , f uinnior mid imtunm , I ooiild
not kit mini ire the recent conquests of
man , I saw throo-qnavtors of an aero
covered with glass and lieated for three
months in the spring , yielding almut
eight tons of tomatoes anil about two
hundred pounds of beans us a first crop
in April and May , to bo followed by two
crops more during the summer and
autumn. As to the results , I cannot.
bettor cliaractei-izo thorn than by quoting
what Mr. AV. Hear , the well known
writer upon English agriculture , wrote
after a visit to the same establishment ,
namely : that the money returns from
those thirteen acres " ( jrojitly exceed
those of an ordinary English farm of
1 , ; ! ? ( ) acres. " The la&t year's crop were :
2-"i tons ol gi-apos ( which are cut from
the first of May till October ) , 80 tons of
tomatoes , 30 tons of potatoes , C tons of
peas , nnd 2 tons of beano ( the last tlireo
iu April ) , to sny nothing of otlioi- sub
sidiary crops. _
