RESULT WILL BE SATISFACTORY , { Flic Adding of the Ward Jlas Itcon Completed nnd Htiows n ttll lit Inureano In the City County HetimiH. Mr. Thomas Cook , supervisor of the census , * 6al in Jndgo Dundy'a chamber nt the court house yesterday morning nnd Jsupcrvised the ' work of Inking the name * of these , who had ' fcccn missed and who called to bo counted. ' Three or four enumerators who have fin- ) ishcd the work in the districts assisted him. There were kicks galore , but the super- > vlsor Minited through it nil , an additional rndl- nnco being added to his features by the reflection - ; flection of a bright red peony that bloomed from his button hole. 1 "These people , " said Mr. Cook In an nsldo lo n reporter after a skirmish with on indig nant citizen from tin ) Third ward , "should remember that there yet remain many hours of the allotted time. Fifty enumerators nro at work In this city today. They can easllv cnumcruto 800 people each , nnd that will make 15,000 names tfiut the enumerators can take today. That is a good many people , if you only know it. A great muny of thcso citizens who are coming up hero have been enumerated without knowing it. The names of young men living In hoarding houses , in many in stances , have l > cen given to the enumerators by their landladies , who nro made competent to do so under the laws governing the census. Of course , wo will inlss some of the residents of Omaha probably from ono two thousand , but that is not many out of Omaha's popula tion. I cannot glvuyou any llgurcs now , as to do so would bo violating my oath. I will laiovv the population of this city , Beatrice , Lincoln and Nebraska City on Saturday and by obtaining a permit from the bureau nt Washington I caa divulge the figures at once. " Two very Indignant residents of the Sixth ward came in with the names of fifteen faml- > , llus in their ward that hud not been taken. t "In reference to the Sixth ward , " said Mr. Cook , "let mo say this to you gentlemen : One of the enumerators I unpointed out there moved away to Chicago without notifying me and it was several days before I discovered that he was not nt work and so out there wo cot behind , but I have four good men at work In the ward today and nil the residents of that district will IK ) enumerated. " There were also complaints from the Cen tral nark neighborhood and from the Seventh wnru. A gentleman named Whitlngham , living in the Sixth ward , was ono of the few visitors to the census room that came in with smiling faces. A girl baby had l > ccn born to Mrs. Whittiiigham in thu morning and this proud father wanted the babe included in the cen sus. He was disappointed when told that only those babies who had been born prior to Juno 1 could be counted. COUNT * ASSESSMENT. OTIic City Rooks Added , With n Sliow- InjI of Nlnetpon million. In 1M meeting , Tuesday , the union depot company decided to put sonic life Into tha on * tcrprlsc and push work Just as rapidly us pos sible. sible.Mr. Mr. Adams snld hova * pleased with the plans und approved everything thut had been done. In a tnlK had with Mr. Van Urunt , one of the architects , the latter stated that , when the structure was complete * ! , Omaha could boast of the very finest depot on this contin ent. The building is to bo constructed of brick , brown sand-stone nnd terra cotta. It will have n frontage on Tenth street of 130 feet with n depth of 150 foot. There will bo ono high basement story partly suMlvldod by a half story under the level of the Tenth street viaduct. The floor of this basement will bo nearly on n level with the tracks , the platforms between which will bo covered by Iron sheds. The building will 1 > 0 approached from the town on a level with the viaduct through n covered porch and ves tibule , by which the uubllo will enter thu iimln Vailing hall , which runs length- \viso through the building with n Moor surface 50x123 feet , enlarged nt the entrance cud by semi-circular additions. The hall will extend to the roof through three stories and bo celled with an arched vault , of which the panels nro to bo in glass. The two outer ends of this hall will Iw occupied by great arched windows. The sides are to bo divided by piers Into n series of bays , and two galleries will bo carried around , giving act-ess to the two ottlco stores above the viaduct story. This hall on the viaduct story will have on the right nnd left capacious waiting rooms with toilet rooms attached , also ticket onlce , pickngo : room , news stand , baggage room and nil the minor ofllccs usually attached to the general watting hulls in first class stations. The hull will bo tiled mid wainscoted to n height of seven feet with marble , and will bo furnished with n grand public staircase of marble nnd iron leading down to the track lloor , where there Is another waiting hall of the same area as the ono nbovo , The baggage department will occupy the spaca on ono side of this lower hall , and on the other sldo will bo 'a waiting room for emi grants , with toilet-rooms attached ; also pub- lie tollet > rooni ! > for both sexes and u largo lunch-room. Over this lunch-room , accessi ble from the hallway landing of the main stains , will bo a great dinlng-lmll , extending through two i lories , furnished with abund ant conveniences for kitchen , serving-rooms , laundry , etc. On the right nnd loft of the main street en trance from the viaduct tire provided largo elevators for tlio public , communicating with the hull beneath on the track Ipvcl. The second nnd third stories nbovo the via duct lloor will lw occupied by the oftices of the various companies. There is a separate staircase entrance to these floors from the viaduct , with separatq elevator , and the rail road ofllces are accessible from the two galleries - lories before mentioned , which look down up on the nuiifi hall. The building will bo nearly fire-proof ; will have every accommodation known In the host of such structures ; will bo heated by fresh nir drawn from the top of the tower and driven by fans Into u plenum hot air room in the cellar , whence the warm air will bo pro pelled through pipes into the various halls and rooms , which nro also furnished with a corresponding system of exhaust pipes for foul liir drawn by revolving fans into main exhaust ducts which have their coil in the tower. The tower will 200 feet high from the via duct level and will have four largo illuminated clock dials. On Removal tu Cheyenne. The removal of Master Mechanic Middle- ton nnd his ofllce to Cheyenne has provoked n great deal of discussion both in business and railroad circles. It is olalmcd , however , by Union Pacific ofllcials that Omaha's interests will not bo affected ; that the present shops which give employment to 1'JOO men tire in no wise to be reduced or interfered with ; that the Nebraska division is more important than any other and can furnish enough work of all kinds to keep this plant running at its full capacity. There are others , however , who pretend to bo well informed and who ridicule these statements. They assert , and with great positivcness , that at least seven hundred men of the Omaha force will bo taken to Cheyenne. Others claim , however , that Cheyenne is to bo the main point for repairs and that Mr. Mlddlctou goes there simply as a matter of convenience. A rumor that the storehouse is also to bo removed from Omaha to the Wyoming capi tal Is positively denied by the authorities at the huadipjnrtcrs. Tcblietts 3Iny lie the Man. According to the very latest report J. S. Tobbetts is to bo made general purchasing agent of the Union Pacific road. Some color is given to the rumor for the reason that it emanates -from a source that never indulges in speculation. Mr. Adatns says , however , that the matter of a permanent succcsor to MeKibbon has not boon decided upon. It is known , though , that the names of two or three good men have been under considera tion. Mr. Charles , of the Chicago , Burling ton it Qulncy at Galesburg , who was once se lected by Vice President Ilolcomb for that place , is favorably mentioned , nnd unless , in deference to Mr. Adams' wishes , it is given to TebbotU , Charles will probably bo the man. Dolt Tjino Double Tt-nolc. Dlvlsion-Superlntcnden IJathburn , of the Missouri Pacific , is in Omaha looking after Clio work of double-tracking the belt lino. Ties and rails were distributed yesterday und truck laying will commence today. The double track will extend only from VVeUUcr street depot to Thirty-first street. It is expected that work will bo commenced within ten days on the Plattsmouth cut-off. Chief Engineer Lewis is now in St. Louis with Mr. Clark , letting contracts for the grading and bridgo-building. Another Summer Kvourslou. Jim Stcphcnson lias completed arrangements with the Union Pacific for u summer excur sion west similar to thut which ho took out last season. It will leave Omaha July Sti and bo gone ono month. It Is proposed to take in Yellowstone park , go north to Portland , swing around liy Shoshone Fulls , and comu back by way of Salt Lake and Denver. Mr. titcphcnson will take his tally-ho coaches along and make short excursions to various points of Interest away off the railroad. Two IlcnHoiiN Given. Vlco-President Ilolcomb says that the of fice of general manager of the Missouri river division goes to Kansas City because thut is Mr. llrinkorhoff's ho o ; also because Super intendent Ban- must have an ontco when ho vacates the old depot soon nnd the only place for him Is Mr. Dickinson's oflleo. "Furthermore , " ho continued , "Brinkcrholl will be on the road more than half his time ; consequently It will make very llttlo differ ence where his headquarters nro located.Ve have room at Kansas City nnd nro short of room hero. The morning Journal censures your corre spondent editorially because the Hguron given in TUB BEK as to damages done by the tor nado do not agree with the e of the Journal. With this single exception the report has been universally commended for its complete ness and accuracy. It is claimed by the Journal that the losses given in Tin : BKK nro too high. But the word of business men hero does iiot corroborate this assertion. Your correspondent did not trust his own judgment in estimating losses , as is inti mated , but followed the word of men who wcro on the scene and who own buildings themselves. Where the loss could not bo arrived at the approximate cost of Urn build ing was given where it was completely or al most completely wrecked. While your correspondent was writing np his report he was approached by certain- busi ness men who : u > lccd him to cither under es timate the damage douo or'write the storm up in a humorous strain as though it amounted to nothing. Otherwise , they in sisted , it would do the city great damage. It is a remarkable fact that an hour or two later ho was again approached and asked to say nothing about the connci'tion of u man of wealth in Lincoln with an alleged scheme to despoil a rich but insane man. Later it was boosted in the presence of your correspondent that no paper In Lincoln dare tell thu truth about this rich man's doings. Whether the other Lincoln ncwspapor men were approached in the same manner or not is not known. But it is u slgnillcant fact that the Journal confined its account of the tornado to only ono building. It was also painfully apparent that there was not a word about the McAllister will case. Tar Br.i : had a detailed account of the tor nado and the alleged deon-lald plot against the McAllister heirs was given in full. It is also signiilcant that the evening News came out last night and declared in a double- leaded editorial that hereafter it would pub lish the news as it could best get it , no mat ter who should ask that it bo .suppressed. It is also an interesting fact that during the past ten days 15 ! ) now subscribers have been added to the Lincoln list of Tun Bii : : . Your correspondent docs not write to wantonly injure the interests of Lincoln or its business men. But he owes fealty to the paper ho represents , and as a faithful em ploye should send nil news to his chief , with out eliminating any parts , no matter how dis agreeable they may bo to anybody. A few days since William Shanan received notice from the B. & M. railway company that a load of household furniture was at the depot for him. Wo have occasion to use but little of the numerous medicines advertised In our paper ; but wo have found one to 1111 the bill of what is claimed for it , and take pleasure in saying so. That is Chamberlain's Colic , Cholera and Diarrhoea Ucmedy. Doitrich Tftlks Strangely of Liocol nnd Through Hates. Mr. G. H. Deltrleh , president of the Ger man National bank at Hastings and ox-presi dent of the Hastings board of trade , called upon Tin : BKK yesterday and took exceptions to a report which appeared in this uapor May 23. Mr. Dcitrich is the gentleman who had a llttlo wordy tilt with Attorney General Leeso at the meeting of the state board of trauspor- tutlon in Lincoln on May 21. Speaking of the meeting Mr. Dcitrich said : "Tho reports scut out hardly did me justice , especially in the matter of quoting mo as using the language of the word bummer in replying to Mr. Lceso , I talked plainly to him , just us ho was talking to mo. I did not say that Mr. Leeso had told a falsehood in his comparison of the Iowa and Nebraska rates. What I did say , and tho' olllelul report of the meeting will bear mo out , was that Mr. Leese seemed to bo the only ono who had pointed out the great differcncp and 1 asked that ho specify some article on which the difference existed. " "Did ho do it ! " "Yes. He took nn extreme low rate in Iowa and an extreme high rate in Nebraska , and was , of course , able to show quite a dif ference. This was owing to a difference in the methods of tlassifying roads nnd freight and could riot be taken as an accurate statement of existing affairs. He took an exceptional case aud made a general application of it. ' "What Nebraska needs , " continued Mr. Dcitrich , "and what wo in the western part of the state are working for , is a reduction of the through rato. The local business in Ne braska is only 10 per cent of the business , the live stock shipments to Omaha excepted , and wo do not think it policy to antagonize the railroads on the local rate question when all our benefits of any importance must come from a reduction of tUo through rates. To illustrate , the three great commodities or great items of railway business , coal , lumber and .stone , are handled in Iowa on a local rate , us they are nil products of the state. Of course the Iowa man is interested in a low local rate. These three Items , which form a bulk of the railway business to Nebraska , are shipped in on an interstate rate and the through rate Is what wo want lowered for our benefit. "A few years npo ; the rate on grain from Hastings to Pacific coast points was SX ) cents to 51.10 a hundred. Wo succeeded in getting a reduction on the through rate to ( H ) nnd 05 cents , and wo now have one fUun that ships thirty-live carloads of grain and chopped feed each month to Hocky mountain points. No possible reduction of local rates would have given us such a benefit. "Tho railroads have made n local rate to Grand Island from points fventy-live miles distant of $ ( i a car , less than ouo-thfrd the aver age local rate in Iowa. Some of the Iowa poli ticians could take this exception , call it a gen eral ruto and make Just as strong u case in Iowa as Mr. Lceso did in Nebraska and still bo Just as far away from the true state of affairs.
