Kept a Vow to Her lliiHlinnd.
Tlio tlonth of Mrs. Stisnn K. Morrillohl
\vhiclt oi'curretl ut Amurlutis , Git. , ro-
eontly , revives interest In ono of the
most peculiar cased over known of a vow
of silence miulo and Itopt thirty yorrs.
In 1800. Mrs. Morrilleld who , it Is said ,
was u llttlo woman of u peculiar ! v bright
and cheery disposition , Was tolling her
husband of seine oeeurronoc , when ho
requested her in a very surly manner to
he silent , adding that the sound of her
voice was hateful to him , says the Phil
adelphia Times.
Jt seems that Mr. Morrillohl , while n
fjood husband in every ether way , was in
the habit of vcntinir his displeasure
when aroused by outside matters by ill
humor with his wife , whoso oed nature
usually passed his testiness by , but on
this occasion she replied that , as it was
hateful to him , ho should never
hoar her voice again. And ho never
did , nor did any other person over
her it , for in spite of her husband's re
morse and remonstrances from friends
and relatives , Mrs. Merrifield kept her
room , though she continued to act the
part of a good wife and mother , fullllling
every duty scrupulously- She oven bore
three children to her husband after this
vow was taken. When communication
was absolutely necessary with those
about her she used a slate , hut reduced a
lanjiiiago of signs to such perfection in
governing her household and children
that'll was but seldom that this slate
was resorted to.
It was thought that when her husband
died she would resume the use of her
speech , but while slid sat by his dying
bed , devoted and loving to the last , in
answer to his Btmplieation that she speak
but n , word to linn , wrote on the slate
with all the evidences of grief : "I can
not , I cannot ! Uod forgive and help me ,
I cannptl" But whether it was that she
found it impossible to break her will and
her vow , or that long disuse had alTected
her organs BO that she really could not
use them , could not bo arrived at ; but
her family inclined to the latter belief ,
for it is said that while on her own
deathbed she made distinct efforts to
speak to her children , dying with the
seal of silence unreinoved from her lips.

It may look like a , very easy thing-for
a member , having his speech written , to
deliver it during the course of an hour
in the house , but it is not such an easy
thing as it looks , says tlio Pittsburg
Telegraph. The average speaker gels a
deal of athletic exercise in the course of
an hour's speech. There are some mem
bers in the house who can stand and
read a speech without lifting a hand ex
cept to turn the pages , and almost with
out changing position , and there nro
others who can talk all day without
getting tired ; but tlio average speaker
perspires as if ho was sawing wood. An
oil-hand speech of ten minutes does not
count , but the man who throws his arms
in the air as if whirling Indian clubs ,
hammers his desk like a blacksmith , and
dunces all around the place for an hour
or more , is taking very violent exercise.
Experience has taught some of them
that is not safe to make such a speech
without taking extra precautions against
cooling olT too quickly afterward.
I know several members who take ex
traordinary precautions. They do not
speak often. They know for weeks beforehand -
forehand that they arc to speak , and
after all preparations are made for the
speech itself , and the day comes for the
olfort , they have a servant bring them a
complete change of linen and underwear
a heavy overcoat to the capitol , and wait
with these things at hand until the
speech is ended. Then the speaker ,
with the perspiration pouring oil him ,
rushes lo the cloak room , whore the ser
vant stands with the coat ready , and
throws it over his shoulders as soon as
ho comes within reach. Next , the mem
ber , with the collar of his overcoat
turned up high , tucks his dry under
clothing under his arm and makes for
the bathrooms. There ho enters the
waiting room , whore the temperature is
high and there can bo no draught , being
under ground and there waits to cool elf
a little preparatory to a bath. There is
no more work for him in the house that
day. When ho has got his bath , ho
makes for his lodgings as fast as ho can ,
and stays there unlil thoroughly rested.

PLOUGHING WITH STICKS.
The Pi-imltivo Way 1'eriiviaiiH Kmploy
toTloklo tlio Kai'tli.
It would make an honest American
farmer smile out loud to see the way the
land is ploughed by Peruvians. tVom
six to a do/.en teams of oxen are put to
work in a Held of twenty or thirty acres.
The oxen tire yoked by tying u heavy
beam across their foroliead and in front
of their horns. To this beam the plow is
attached , all the force being applied by
the head Instead of the shoulders.
Tlio plow is a crooked stick or branch
of a tree , the point faced with iron.
Peruvians contend that tlioy do not need
to plpw more than two or three inches
deep , simply enough to loosen the soil
so as to enable the seed to take root.
The water used In irrigating is said to
ho rich in plant food , further obviating
the necessity of deep ploughing.
Improved ploughs suitable for this
country nro now manufactured in Europe
and the United States , but they nro very
different from the ploughs used by an
American farmer. They are light and
small , having a eloo resemblance to the
original crooked stick.
Every Peruvian plough has but ono
handle. The driver carries in ono hand
a huge goad , twelve or fifteen feet in
length , with which to touch up his team
and ho manages thu plough with the
ether hand. The irrigating ditches
must then bo connected with the canal
which brings the water from the river
and which traverse the Held at a dis
tance of three or fmir feet apart and are
bix to eight inches deep.
They are so arranged that the whole
Hold can bo instantly Hooded by turning
on the water , and every hill of corn and
potatoes ofbiigarenno will bo thoroughly
soaked. Of course , the Holds must slope
in the right direction and if nature has
not so made it the level is reduced biilll-
clcntly before it is ploughed.
