is this year largely dependent on the foreign
rice to supply the dellelencies In Its own crop ,
the quantity and quality of the eastern crops
untl tendencies of the markets abroad are of
more interest than for several years past.

tative counties give a fairly accurate
estimate of the crop prospects-this sea-
bon , wiy the San Frandisco Chronicle.
The reports are made more interesting
this year by tlio fact of excea.sivo rains
which delayed seeding and in many
localities injured fruit , but a careful
reading of the o dispatches will show
that , while grain has bullered in many
of the largo counties , the quality will be
fine and the yield of fruit of all kinds
will bo enormous. One of the most
signillcant features is tlio rapidity with
which grain land in u score ot comities
is beiiitf converted into orchards and
vineyards. Several largo wheat
counties report a deercapo in
acreage and yield of wheat
of from one-quarter to one-half. Uutto
and Solano report a falling olT of one-
half , Los Angeles one-quarter , and Sac
ramento two-thirds , but against thin maybe
bo placed a largo increase in Korn.
Fresno , Merced and Tularo. Barley
averages about the suno as wheat.
In fruits of all kinds there has been an
enormous increabo in acreage and the
crop will bo the largest on record.
Fresno leads with lOoO acres planted to
raibin grapes. Thou comes ICern , San
Diego , and Butte with : iIOO ( acres each
in vines , Merced with 2,000 acres , and
Sonomn and Placer with 1,000 each.
Los Angeles planted 1,000,000 now
orange trecb this season and Tularo put
in 0,000 acres to all kinds of fruit. The
yield of orangeb , raibins , and grapes will
no the largest on record. All other
fruits promibowell with the exception of
peaches and almonds. Taken altogether
the outlook for the season is good.

C. A. Kabtman , the young Sionx who
graduated from the Boston university
school of medicine recently , is well
known by all Dartmouth graduates of
the last few years , says the Boston Ad
vertiser. Ilo "came on the campus" in
the autumn of 1883 and at once proved a ,
star attraction for the freshman class of
1880. Football and cano rushers were
then in vogue at Ilanovor , and they wore
pretty vigorous ones , too. East
man's Indian blood at once assorted
itself , and ho was always in the
hottest of the fray , where his great
btrcngth and courage wore very valu
able. Tlio sophs acquired a hearty re
spect for him in these little scrimmages ,
and always acted as if they wore afraid
lie might suddenly go into the wholesale
scalping business. And when the great
final rush came oil' and the freshmen
stood in solid columns , bared to the
waist , and bodies well oiled , awaiting tlio
onslaught of the sophomores , Kiibtmuu
was in the front rani : with shoulders
gleaming and black eyes full of light.
Kastman had his full regalia of a Sioux
chief at college , and sometimes ho would
invite tlio boys into his room and don tils
feathers and buckskins to the great ad
miration of the humble freshmen who
were allowed to attend the ceremony.
