The day was an entrancing ono , and the patrons of the college , with the friends of the students , turned out In force , bent upon par ticipating In the enjoyment of the annual en tertainment at this nourishing institution. The hall was densely packed long before the opening of the exorcises , and by the time- they began the halls , too , were llllcd with in terested spectators. Tlio stage was beautifully banked with wild ferns and roses and clinging vines , and pre sented a fresh and lovely appearance. After an enlivening chorus by the college class , James Oastlcr of Bellevue delivered an oration on the "American Indian. " w'hich as on original production , pave evidence of n clearness of thought and vigor of expression that was ciuito refreshing In n young gentle man of Air. Oastlcr's age. His declamatory powers were also quite strong. The essay "The Oak in History , " by Lottie E. A. Hamilton of Decutur , was a happily conceived effort , replete with now and novel information , and which the fair authoress read with much elocutionary fervor. Fete milibulrc , n piano duet by M. Blanche Davlcs and Anna Dustier , was quito prettily rendered. "The Salutations of the Nation , " by Helen M. Longsdorf , Bellevno , an essay explaining tlio various acts and remarks of the citizens of different countries on meeting and separ ating , was well written , well read and very Interc.stlnjr. George F. Williams of Nlobrura acquitted himself with much credit with his declama tion on the "Great Commoner. " George's delivery was nil right , the sentiment of his effort edifying , but his faulty memory marred both of these. Still ho was liberally ap plauded. Mr. Williams' oration was followed with a piano solo by a little tot named Emma Wright , who evinced some of the qualities of which the greatest performers are made. "Tho History Poem , " Miss Tes-ja Blake's essay , was a humorous recital of the charac teristic ! ! of her classmates and the old famil iar scones of school lifo. Miss Blake , who is n beautiful brunette , read her clover produc tion In a sweet , distinct voice , quito as capti vating as the sparkling generalities of her song. Charles A. Mitchell of Springfield , O. , won the vigorous endorsements of all present by his profound and thoughtful oration entitled , "The Will as an Element in Character. " The piano duct , "Poet and Peasant , " by Miss Henderson and Miss Davis , was a beau tiful number , oxqisitely rendered. The title of Miiltio M. Elliott's essay was "Tito Prophecy. " It was a well written paper nnd was read vith much impressment of manner. Miss Elliot Is from Beatrice. "Association of Ideas an Element of the Beautiful , " an oration by Hurry A. Curnahan of Pnwnco City , was n profound effort elo quently delivered. nTho master's oration , "Tho Russian Revolution , " by Prof. H. A. IClunoy of Wood bine , lit. , was one of the chief features of the day. It was n deep nnd masterful effort , re plete with historical knowledge and glitter ing with enchanting word painting. Following the professor came the presenta tion of the diplomas by the president of the college , Dr. JCerr , and Prof. W. D. McFnr- land , which was an impressive ceremony. The college class then Joined in a closlmr chorus , and the exorcises for ' 00 wcro over. The visitors then adjourned to the new res idence building , where a repast was indulged in. There wcro many visitors from tlio city , and altogether the occasion was u very inter esting ono. _ Moroliants' liotolOiiinha. . $2 to $3 per day. Nat.BrownproprIraP.Iligbyingr. Christian Approval. A New Schedule. When the Union Pacific oillclub were at Salt Lake , last week , they made arrange ments for another change of tlmo between this city and San Francisco. The Southern Paclllo people have always stood In the way of Union Pacific oi > craters making the fast tlmo between the river and ocean as could bo made If both corporations worked In harmony. Then they urged the Union Pacific to change the time of its overland train , which carries nil the emi grant travel , so an to leave Omaha at 8 o'clock u. m. , instead of 8 o'clock p. m. , so as to get it as well ns the limited into San Francisco in the morning. But a compromise was effected to this ex tent that the Union Pacific will put both of the trains into Ogdcn for connection with the Central Paclllo halt un hour earlier than at present. The new time table , therefore , will bo re vised on the run between Green River and Ogden only. " "Had they no authority for their action } " "None whatever I" answered the comptrol ler with great emphasis. Lot mashowyou that I am right , " and Mr. Goodrich produced a copy of both authorities and pointed to the following words which contained in suc tion 110 of the now charter. "No contract or vote incurring nn Indebtedness for moneys payable out of any funds shall bo tnado by the mayor or city council , and no llnal action shall bo taken upon such proposed contract or indebtedness without the cortillcato of the comptroller that there are funds available to pay same. " "If that isn't plain , explicit and strong enough , " added Mr. Goodrich , "then I don't know anything about the English language. The mayor certainly did just right in vetoing the contract ami the council did just wrong In passing it over his veto. " This contract was let at Councilman Davis' instance , and in whipping the combine Into following him. ho explained at length at the council meeting last night the great necessity of the work. A little oyo-tolcgraphy was in dulged in and it was understood'that the con tract should bo approved , the veto of the mayor to the contrary notwithstanding.
