At noon the other day a deed of transfer was signed by George Storm by which the imtr.cuso business , cigar fac tories and tobacco plantations of the late 11 rm wore handed over to the Owl clgnr company. The new company , which takes possession at once and assumed all the debts of the old Arm , has boon organized under the laws of the state of Now York , say3 the New York Sun. The capital of the -company has not been made public , but it is said by outsiders to bo about ? 1.000,000. The stock has been privately distributed , nnd is all taken up. A majority of it is held by George Storm. Some blocks of it have been given to various stuto superintendents of Straiten & Storm. A sni'ill portion of it has gene to outsiders. The meaning of the transfer is not very clear. There is no combination made with any other cigar manufacturer that would point toward a monopoly. Tlio business of Straiten & Storm was a prosperous one. Mr. Storm , the head of the house , is still a com- paiatively young man , being only forty-eight years of age. Muro than 1,000,000 cicMra per week are made in Straiten & Storm's factories. The main oftlees nnd buildings nro on East Twenty- Seventh street , in this city. About 15,000 persons are employed therein manufacturing cigars. There are uU > o two smaller factories on Avenue A. The tirm of Straiten & Storm was first es tablished in 1S01. In that year Schmitt & Storm begun business in n small way at 101 Pearl street. The business of the llrm was then , as it has been since , strictly conlined to the manufacture of domestic cliriirs. In 1 1)3 John Straiten joined the firm which then bectmo Straiten , Schmitt A : Storm. In 18W Schmitt retired. In 1SS5 SVr.iitoa went out , leaving the use of his name. In 1887 Mr. Storm began n now and inter esting experiment. Before the war , tobacco which could compete so successfully for cigar making purposes with that of Havana , had been grown in Florida. Attempts wore afterwards made in various parts of the country to grow a substitute for Havana to bacco without.success. Orungo plantations monopolized the arable lands of Florida to the exclusion of almost every other plant. One advantage which Mr. Gcorgo Storm is said to have over all his competitors is his wonderful sense of tnsto and smell whore tobacco is concerned. It has been claimed for htm that he can tell in whnb country a leaf of tobacco was grown by smelling it , though not allowed to taste or see It. After many experiments Mr. Storm bought four tobacco plantations in Gudsdcn county , Flor ida. The product of those is placed on the market this year for the llrst time as Florida cigars. The ofllcers of the Owl cigar company nro : Gcorgo Storm , president ; I'etcr Miller , vice- president mid treasurer ; Henry Storm , secre tary , nnd W. M. ( Jerry , manager of planta tions. All these were either partners or em ployes of the old linn. Straiten & Storm have nlwio'H had n curi ous reputation in one respect. They would never enter into any comoyiatlon to regulate prices with other cigar manufacturers. Neith er would they permit the ordinary tobacco jobber to cut prices on their cigars. Instead of selling their cig.irs to Jobbers they preferred to distribute thorn direct to retailers through resident iigents. This did not please many scalping jobbars , who always endeavored to restrict the sale of Straiten & Storm's clgnrs as much us possible. Since the formation of the great tobacco plug trust some months ago many combina tions have been made by tobacco manufactur ers. The clgaretto manufacturers , to give one case , are now united into one great corpora tion. It Is thought that the fear of gutting squeezed by some combination of jobbers has hail something to do with the .conversion of Straltou & Storm Into a company. HKIIOINKS AT A F1KE.
