Rumors of more changes nil the Union Pacific headquarters. Everybody seems to bo In drcnd of losing his place. Those who felt safe before General Manager Dlckcnson'a ' fall would not now bo surprised to Imvo their own heads drop without a moment's ' warning. "I would sdvlso nny man working for the Union Pacific , " said a prominent citizen , "to keep his eye on the lookout for another Job. You can't tell ono mlntito what Charles Francis Adams will do the next. "Dlckcnsou was discharged without cause , nnd I can tell you , too. that Adams' treatment of him has created u strong feeling In this community. "Tho constantly unsettled condition of affairs in Union Pacific circles keeps every body more or less agitated. There is so much uncertainty that It extends to and affects business interests. " The latest rumor has It that there will sooner or later be nu eruption In the gcnor.il freight department. It is openly stated by parties who claim to have reliable informa tion that General Traflle Manager Mellon will bo the very next man to walk the chalk- , line. Those who uro on the Inside , however , declare they know there Is no foundation for the statement. Nevertheless , recent develop ments look very strange. "Why should Adams call Tobbctts out on the road with him to talk about freight mat ters instead of Mellcn or Munroe , unless there is something In the wind I" inquired one interested Individual. "t know , " ho continued , " .the officers may stick up for Mellcn. hut , mind what I tell you , that's only a blind. Ho was entirely too thick with McKibbon to stay hero long. "They may tell you that ho apologized to Holcomb , promised to hereafter bo loyal , nnd got his salary raised , but there's nothing in It. Look out for bigger sensations than nny thing wo Imvo yet had. They nro com ing. I have some doubts about Brlnkcrhoff succeeding Dlckenson. He is n rood manbut the train men on his division don't take very kindly to him. I heard n conductor remark in the most significant manner yesterday : 'Dickcnson goes July 1. Wo will quit about the Una. It would bo very unfortunate , of course , to have anything serious happen on account of Dick- enson's removal because ho has a friendly feeling for the road and all the boys on it. "Ucsseguio , general manager of the Moun tain division , may bo transferred to Omaha. If ho is , I would not bo surprised to sco Bob Baxter elevated to the position now hold by him at Salt Lake. " Xot Pleased with the Scheme. Local traffic men are not pleased with the Interstate Commerce commission's request that rates from the Missouri river to Chicago bo reduced from 20 to 17 cents per hundred. Mr. Kimball of the Union Pacific says thnt tariffs nro lower now than before known , con sequently another , nnd what must if made bo a permanent reduction , would , in his opinion , lower the earning power below what the roads MH stand. It is unfortunate , ho thinks , that the commission should bo called upon when rates are on a war rate basis to recom mend that they bo reduced ! J cents more. A Newspaper Excursion. Next Saturday the B. & M. will send a party of Onriha and Lincoln newspaper men out on an excursion of the northwest line of that road , to Newcastle , Wyo. , nnd Hot Springs , Dak. The purpose of this trip is to give the public at largo some informa tion about the development of that far away. region , tlio coal interests , the now road that is being built , summer re sort improvements and news In general. The party will have a special Pullman car at its disposal and cverthing necessary for an eu- Joynblo time. A Finn Special Train. General Agent Phillippl of the Missouri Pacific has arranged to send out ono of the finest special trains today that ever left Omaha for the accommodation nnd comfort of those who go from Nebraska to the national convention of Christian Endeavor association at St. Louis. Among those who have booked for berths are S. U. Bond , chairman of the state union ; A. W. Lane , secretary : Miss Comlu Philbrick , secretary of the Omaha union ; Thco P. Cramer , C. R. Wilson and II. S. Bird. The train is scheduled to leave the Webster street depot nnd will be com posed entirely of Pullman palace cars. An Kxoiirsioti Party. Gardner M. Lane , second vice president of the Union Pacific , and daughter , Boston ; Ed mund Smith , president Of the Oregon Kail- way & Navigation company , Philadelphia ; Ellenton P. Whitney nnd Miss Constance Whitney , Milton , Mass. , are in the city en ronto west. They nro on a pleasure tour and will take In all the Pacific coast attractions. Another Commissioner Undertakes to Olvo It Ventilation. "I sco nothing whatever In Mr. Anderson's minority report regarding the final wind-up of the new county hospital matter , " said Commissioner O'Keeffo yesterday morning , "but nn utterly groundless bid for votes. The whole point of his report is that ho asserts the records show less than ? 1,000 duo on the hospital building. The assertion is almost too silly to bo noticed when nearly everybody knows there nro four distinct records kept , and always have been , of every dime paid out by the commissioners. First Is the voucher , then the warrant issued by the county clerk , the cash register of the county treasurer , and fourth the returned warrant. And these very best of records in the world nro now in Douglas county's vaults for every cent that has ever been expended. ' 'Tho Clmrles-Hoss assertion which ho makes is worse than silly , it is idiotic. The commissioners' records show that Ross was appointed at a salary of SUM ) per month ns Inspector specter of the retaining wall around the court house , and that as soon as that was douo ho was again retained as superintendent of the btono basement tit tlio now hospital building. " A N'oted Month. Keolnik , In. , Democrat : August , 188" , was n noted month. It gave extreme heat and extreme cold , the results of which were disastrous to the public health. Cases of colic , cholera morbus and diarrhoea were abundantand thorowcronumcrous calls at ( ho drug stores far ChuniDorlaln's Colic , Cholera and Diarrhoea Hemody. Druggists of this city tell us that this remedy has been more frequently called for during the past month than any other preparation , nnd that it has proven a panacea for the very worst cases. Chamberlain's Colic , Cholera and Diarrhoea Hemedy Is a meritorious medicinal prepara tion for nil summer complaints for which It Is recommended , and grows In popularity in this city and vicinity. These sales are in creasing rapidly , and wonderful cures are re ported. THOSE GIIADINU CONTUACTb. They Will llo Carried Out UH Origi nally Intended. The grading contracts which were let by the board of public works last Saturday will bo curried out as originally intended. Away down In ono corner of the city treas ury a JIUlo wad containing about f 10,000 has been discovered nnd turned Into the general fund. Somebody happened to think that city warrants are never drawn for more than W ) jwr cent of the U < vy each year , leaving u bal ance of 10 per cent , which Is counted on 113 bollix non-collectable. As the years go by. however , this amount Is gradually collected luut forms a surplus. Acting on this Idf a n search was made through the books of the treasurer nnd comp- trolli r yt sterility , which resulted In Ihuiing the uiiumut of * lO.OOO which hud been uccu- ululating during the period from IfcOO to 1830. This sum was turned Into the general fund nnd the board of public works was noti fied that the contracts for grading might bo signed , ns there wus money to pay for the work. Accordingly the contracts were signed yes terday nnd the work will proceed. A great deal of comment was heard around the court house last evening when this fact became known. Several gentlemen thought it a strange proceeding thnt as largo an amount as f 10,000 could bo on the books of the city and nobody know anything about it. An Absolute Cure. The rumor that Kansas City is laying her plans to capture the lion's share of the Upper Missouri appropriation Is not very seriously considered by the resident engineer , Mr. Pot ter. This gentleman has no doubt that Kan sas City would accept any amount of money offered but doubts that she can get nny right fully belonging to Omaha or any other point along the river. The work being done above Omaha is rap idly eating up the present appropriation. By the end of the present month , more money will bo required or the work must cense. The amendment to the river and harbor bill proposed by Senator Paddock provides for nn appropriation of $15,000. This , the engineer thinks , would bo about right and would com plete the work. _ Miles' Ncrvo and Ijivor Pills. An important discovery. They act on the liver , stomach and bowels through the nerves. Mrs. Annie Smith , a middle-aged woman , and her thrco young sons , aged ton , eight and six , years respectively , fig ured in a sad scene in the mayor's ollleo in St. Louis tlio other morning. She led the three boys , all bright ana neatly dressed children , in the ollleo and asked to Imvo them committed to the house of refugo. She said that her husband was sick and tumble to work by reason of his habits , and that she had a young child and was compelled to work herself she could not take care of the boys , says the Post Dis patch. When Sergeant MeGrew began to question her she became indignant , and showed a disinclination to answer him. When she was given to under stand the boys would not bo taken olT her hands by the city unless she gave the information sought , she materially altered her tone. When the little fellows were turned over to a big policeman for removal to the house of refuge the building rang with their cries and appeals to their mother to snvo them. The crowd in the olfico attracted by the cries of the little fellow was touched by the scene , but if Mrs. Smith was moved to nny great ex tent she exorcised a masterly control over her feelings. Samuel Longfellow , the brother of the poet , now live , says the Boston Gazette. The house looks exactly as it did in the old days when the great poet received his friends with sweut and gentle courtesy. His spirit seems to haunt the rooms and halls , mid will bo over present to those who had the privilege of his friendship. The two younger daughters , Mrs. Richard IT. Dana and Mrs. Joseph G. Thorpe , jr. , have built houses adjoining tlio old es tate , so that the Longfellow sisters live side by side , in the order of primogeni ture. Across Brattle street is the little park named in honor of the dead poet.
