The Union Pacific conductors had expected to hold n meeting nt headquarters yesterday with Vice President Holeomb and General Manager DIckcnson , to consider the griev ances that have been pending since last March. As neither of those oniclals , however , was nt home , nothing could be done. Among members of the committee In the city nro K. B. Clark , grand chief conductor , Ogdcn ; W. P. Daniels , grand secretary , Cedar Haplds , la. ; G. F. Mclntosh , OgdenF. ; C. Amherg and L. V. Brady , Denver ; W. W. Knight and Spencer Potts. St. Joseph ; .T. M. Uodman , Kansas City , and J. W. General Manager MeNc.il of the St. Joe t Grand IsXnul division may be In attendance - tendanco also. Mr. Clark said ho thought the difference would bo satisfactorily adjusted nnd without very much difllculty. "In fact , " ho con tinued , "tho whole matter has narrowed down until there nro only two or three minor points to bo considered. Wo would have reached an agreement at the Cheyenne meeting had Mr. Dlckenson not been suddenly called home on Important business. " Mr. Clark Is a very pleasant gentleman , about thht.v-four years old. Having recently been elected grand chief conductor of the national order , a great deal of interest is cen tered In him in anticipation of his policy. Since the order inaugurated one or two Im portant departures from established rules and especially the movement abolishing that prohibitory strike clause many railroad men throughout the country nro anxious about what the future will bring forth. Speaking of this matter Mr. Clark stated tlfat there was nothing to be feared though the condudtors felt that if it became abso lutely necessary for them to secure their rights through n strike they wanted to bo in a position whore tliero was nothing to pre vent them doing so. There are roads in the country that manifest a disposition to treat their employes unfairly but they are the ex- cf'ptions. Mr. Clark was born at Limn , N. Y. , and when a boy Hrinly believed that the Lima bean originated there. Ho commenced railroading reading us n brakcnnn on the Burlington , Cedar Knplds & Northern In 1S7J1 : came west in IbTO and went on the Central Pacific- Ogdcn as u brakeman. Two years later ho was promoted to n conductorship of freight and emigrant trains. For the past 11 vo years ho lias been running passenger on the Denver & Hio Grande Western. Last year , at the Denver meeting of the order of railway conductors , ho was elected grand senior conductor and this year , against can didates from all parts of the country , ho was chosen grand chief. As the headquarters of the orderis nt Cedar Unpids , la. , ho will move there with his family. The question of federation was raised nt Kochc'ter , but the only action taken on that subject was the appointment of a committee , of which Mr. Clark is chairman , to make an investigation and report at the next annual meeting. The other members are Messrs. Wilkins of Chicago , W. P. Ef.mlcls , Cedar Haplds ; S. P. Maderd , Colorado Springs , and A. E. Govern of Montgomery , Ala. Conductor Wullo's The remains of II. Mr. AVaito was n respected member of the Brotherhood of Unilwny Conductor's and of the Grand Army of the Hepublic. Mr. Middleton Is a gentleman of flno ap pearance. It is said that ho possesses , to u largo degree , the happy faculty of knowing how to make friends with and control men who work under him. As ho expects to bring his family with him ho is also looking lor a residence. John Player has been appointed to succeea Mr. Middleton as master mechanic ol the Santa Fo at Topeka. Contract for Ktouo Tjet. A contract has been let to p irties at M in- hattan , Kan. , for stone to be used In building the abutment and pier foundations of the Tenth istreet viaduct. Work will bo commenced on the viaduct as soon as the gradeis shall have llnKhcd the cut through Tenth street for the depot tracks. A roptescntatlvo of the Dalroit bridge comp - p my says that the Iron work is belli , ? pushed us rapidly us possible. A. Reason Given. General Superintendent Earllng of the Milwaukee was hero Sunday and said that the reason for not running the trains of that road into Omaha , as ho had expected , was duo to the fact that some of the detailed ar rangements could not bo completed In ttmo. Ho had hopes of closing the deal before re turning home , but was not prepared to state when the now order would go into effect. It will not ho later , however , than Juno 13.
