Curious I'liliitinjiol'tlte Funeral Cere
monies on Cliiilntettu PlaiiiH.
In 11 little grocery : it 4lio , corner of
Prytnnia and Polymnfa streets is a pic
ture which by no stretch of the imagi
nation can bo considorctl a work of art ,
yet it possessed a peculiar interest to the
Orleanian as being possiblyu the only
record extant of one of the great events
in the history not only of this state but
of the country itself , says the Now Or
leans Delta.
It is an oil painting about six by four
feet in dimensions , surrounded 'by a
cheap home-mado frame. The scene
represents the ceremonies which were
hold at the Chalmotto battle-ground the
day of the funeral of General and Presi
dent "Hickory" Jnckson.
The figures are Hat , stilT and awkward
in the extreme ; the jierspectivo is on a
par with that of the Chinese and Japanese
artists , the green sward resembling the
green bai'/o table , but the woo-bogone ,
blank expression of the lines of the sol
diers and spectators is as suggestive of
the absence of lifo as It is possible for
counterfeits of the human countenance
to be.
In the center stands a monument decorated -
orated with largo funeral wreaths and
surmounted by n brass eagle ; behind are
grouped the spectators , while still
lurther back , outlined against the sky ,
rise the masts and the rigging of several
ships. A mass of green foliage rising
abruptly from either side of the picture
forms a baokgroimd for two rows of sol
diers , in blue coats and white panta
loons , who are hugging their guns in a
very unmilitury manner.
At the head of each row of soldiers , a
little to 0110 side , stand Indians , the one
on the loft hand a chief and that on the
right a squaw with a child in hoiarms. .
Between the rows of soldiers is a broad ,
red-colored walk , which runs up to the
monument. On the right , and in the
rear of the monument , is reared a tall
HagstalY , from which the American Hag
appears half-masted , not falling in
graceful folds moved by the gentle zeph
yrs , but Hat and still'as a plank.
Inscribed on the monument are these
lines :
i ANIUIKW .IA : K OX. :
; EVUH DIIKAUt'UI , , :
: 1313. :
This unique painting is further orna
mented with the name , "Fred Schnotti ,
1815 , " presumably the artist. Its owner.
Mr. llaptist UoUat , purchased it eight
years ago at an auction sale for $ o , and
though ho has been olTored handsome
sums for it declines to pari with the
oddity. It is certainly a curious bit of
canvas , and antiquarians in years to
como will look on it with veneration anil
reverence as a picture of historical im
portance.
An Kleotlon In San Marino.
The annual election , or political lot
tery by which the ropublio of San Mar
ino selects its capitam roggonti , or twin
presidents , for the now year , occurred in
March last. San Marino , which has a
population of about eight thousand , is >
ruled by a double authority. On the
day fixed for election the retiring mag
istrates march in solemn procosslon ,
headed by the band of the republic , es
corted by sixteen of the Mobllo Guard
belonging to the plobhm class ,
and followed by the authori
ties , to the chief church. Hero
they tire received by the clergy. Then
the Vonl Creator Is sung , after which
the election begins in Iho church Itsolf.
Ono of the priests reads out the nnmes
of the citizens who are eligible , each
written on a ticket which is placed upon
n silver salver , and the latter emptied
into n largo silver vaso. A child is
called upon to draw two tickets out of
the vase and the names drawn are those
of the elected rulors. The priest loudly
reads out the names , the band strikes up
a hymn , the bolls of the town are net
a ringing , and San Marino has her two
capltanl rogguuti for the ticxt twelve
months.
