" Kuv Dr. Shlnn , who dell vt-rad the memorial addrcsft , took for his text : Joshua Iv. 2f and 22. "When your children slmll ask their fathom in tlina to come , Baying what mean these stories , then you shall let your children know. " The bible , said the speaker , is full of memorials. The sahhath Is u memorial day. The Incident In the lifo of Christ when Mary nnnolntrcl him with ointment wits to bo told to all the world for a memorial of her. Ono who was presen then found fault with the expense and so today there are those who will find fault with the waste of money for ( low ers and ( lugs In the memorial celebration. It Is not for the dead that the day Is cclobratcd but to foster In the heaiU of the living , patri otism and lovr of country. Patriotism was a principle cultivated by the ancient .lows , as Is evident In the palhctlu song : "How can wo all sing the songs of Man In a strange land " Many stories are set up among us cominemorauvo of the deeds of our nation's heroes. The living do not need them , but they will stand as a memorial to our children nnil our children's children. The Grand Army of the Republic will soon bo mustered out and the records of these deeds can only bo road from the stones set up. This record may not bo pleas ing to those who fought for the overthrow of the union , but this will all bo changed and north nnd south will rejoice. If , however , nny treason remains so much the more reason for n memorial day. Wo do not want war , but peace. Wo have had enough of war. If we could mcnsuie the pain of fathers , mothers , sistf-rs and sweethearts as well as that on the battlefield could bo measured , wo might esti mate what the war cost. The grc.it reason wo have today for thank fulness Is the establishment of the principle that "all men wore created frco and equal. " The Infamous and heartless system of slavery was wiped out and that glorious faot wo com memorate. Again wo are a united people and both sec tions are gradually forgetting the humiliation of defeat nnd Jointly rejoicing in the outcome of the conflict which bas'cd both north and bOUtll. The speaker hero paid eloquent tribute to the memory of Lincoln , and urged the appro priateness of annually recalling the record of Ids deeds. The coming week the graves of the soldiers will be dccoMtc'd , but who will place ( lowers over the heads of the namelcbs graves ) Thousands of them are scattered np and down the country ; their occupants died for their country , and next week , though unknown , they will bo loincmhcrcd. Vvhilo wo rejoice over past victories and recall past hardships , wo must not forget that we ) iive ; foi's to light now. The wor- iulp of the golden calf , the giving and taking of uilbes , the reign of money kings and the oppiession of the people ; the company of gam blers operating the Louisiana state lottery , the infamous enemy of cveij thing sacred and pure which wo nic licensing and which con- tiols and rules tills nation \vhirli is in out schools , courts and legislative halls the liquor -aro evils which we need a grand army to cmsh as the cm so ol slavery was crushed. Let us teach our children to love and honor the memory of our dead heroes , but teach thorn albo to rcili/.c ; that there arc other foes which wo and they must overcome. Suvidgo preached to a large and attentive audience at Boyd's opera liou'o yesterday morning , May 25. Hib biib- Jcct was "Faithfulness to Hod in Little Things , " Lukoxvl-IO , "Ho that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much. " Our subject tins morning is "Faithfulness in Little Tilings. " There is a desho in the hearts of most men to do the grc.it thing , butte to paw ) by the small duties. When MajorGcn- cral Xaaiwm went down to the laud of Israel and applied for treatment at the bunds of Dr. Klislm , ho was willing to pay $18,000 for n cure. Indeed ho had brought the money for that purpose , but ho was not willing to hum- bio hlmsell and dip seven times in the muddy Joidan. Hut this ho hud to do In order to bo healed , Hod himself sets us the example of faithfulness in little things. In the work of creation God did not put all the work on the stars , but he polished the back of the smallest Insect with as gicut care us he fashioned the bones of the huge mastodon. Ho dug the channel for the great Amazon , but Ho also traced out with Ids linger the corn-so for the little brook. Ho made the little ( lower as well its the great trees on the Pacific slope. And in the great work of redemption the smallest and humblest ofllces were not omitted. Jesus has never overlooked the lowly and the despised. Ho glories In the fact that ho came to save such. Ho did not despise little children or pass by the blind beggar by the wayside. And today lie cares for everything Ho has made. He notices the fall of a span-owns truly us ho records the burning of a world. What a Father wo have ! "Whatan example Ho sets us ! Unceasing praises bo to his holy name I God has made choice of the small and weak agencies for his own glory and the good of mankind. "But God hath chosen the foolish tliiiiKs of the world to confound the wko ; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to con found the things which are mighty. " God only gives to Moses a rod , but it proves to bo u iniigle wand. Sliamgar holds In his hand only an ox goad but God is in it. When God wants a king for Israel ho anoints a shepherd boy , and tills htilpllngaccomplishes moio than the com bined armies on n battle Hold. The mlcio- Bcopo was Invented about the time of the telescope and has been eminently useful 'W hen Iho suspension bridge was built over Is'Iitimi the llrst thing that was done was to send a boj' kite over the chasm ; It carried u silken cord and that cord drew after it a who , and the wiics tables , and the cables n bridge \ \ liicli now bears the thunder of tratllc between two empires. ] } e. whoof Kreatest worl.s Is ( Inlshor , Oft1 does It by the feeblest minister. The life of Caiitaln Hall , the famous Arctic explorer , was saved bv a shoe- hiring. If you are not great and wlso be not disheartened. You aio the very one God will delight to use. The Maine gills re paired. to the pulaeo at 1:30 : p. in. and found the apartments crowded with people ple buying goods much as is done in our Now England bazaars. Presently the young ladies saw that the worshippers of Bihinarck began to bo a ware of his presence , and half a do/.on bouquets wore placed in his hands. "What lovely flowers the prince has ! Bismarck overheard the remark , and turning to the young ladv and shaking her hand , said also in English : "But do you not think there are more bestowed on me than I desorvoV" 'If I had. moro I would add them to your stock , " she retorted. BLsmarclc laughed and added : "T am very glad to see that you Americans tale interest enough in the biuni1 to coino hero. The prince turned and smiled nnd ex tended his hand to each of the Maine girls and said : "And you , too , are Americans. And you think the palace is magnificent ' , do you ? I am glad it pleases 'you. I am happy to welcome you as Americans. The exor cise , us vouched for by Mfss Mabel Jon- ness , Is both scientific and healthful , ns well as a graceful nnd delightful mode of locomotion. The wheelmen of the past had the delights of the bicycle solely to themselves. Then came the advent of the trieyelo for women , its gradual overthrow , the lull of the Indies' cycling , and then vivo lo bicycle for ladies just as well as for men. Now the three-wheeled nflairs , known as the tricycles , nro things of the past , and the ladies' bicycles nro high in the favor of the wheelwomen of yt. Louis ns well ns elsewhere. Tire fair- riders mount the wheel witlr the agility of the wheelman himself , set their ma chine going and spin away with the ilectncss of a bird. At present there are at least fifteen women bicycle riders lu town , whilst candidates for the Ijonor in the shape of amateurs in process of study are constantly on the increafcc. Among the lady bicyclists of this city may bo counted the following : The greatest expert in the line , the most fin ished and graceful of nil , is Miss Delia Ilnrdcastle. This young lady is a grand daughter of the late Colonel Calvin Case , who was so well known in Mis souri , nnd who was one of the prominent citizens who wore killed in the famous Gasconade accident. She is also a niece of Dr. Case of Ferguson. Miss Hardcnstlo is counted far-nnd-nwny the best whcelwomnn of the city. She is one of the Indies mentioned ns riding to Baldwin and back last week on their wheels. She rides for pleasure everyday a djstaneo of from fifteen to twenty miles without experi encing the least fatigue. Miss Ilaracas- tlo is pretty ns vt'cll as gracftil. She is tall nnd slight in her physique , whjch lias all the beauty in curve and outline that constant outdoor exercise develops. She lias delicate , fair skin , regular fea tures and lovely blue eyes , which are all animation nnd expression. Her linir is golden brown nnd soft , and is worn sim ply on her classic head. She examined several pairs , but each one was too hard in action to suit her ; they did not move freely enough. There was one bet that she had taken an especial fancy for , but , like the others , the two sides ground one against the other , making it diiHcult to move them as she wished. The dealer picked them up , rubbed his linger near where the two blndes joined , and said. "Why , these &oem free enough. " They were ; yet only n moment before they hiiu been ns stiff ns possible. How did. this happen ? \Vhcn the purchaser loft the store 1 inquired the wherefore , and the denier answered : "Did you notice mo rub my nose ? " "Not particularly. " "Well , I did , and that is the secret of the shears operating easily. Where the nose forms nn indention near the cheek a small quantity of oil matter collects on every person's face. 1 rubbed my little linger therein and oiled them so they now run smoothly.
