" The guest changed his linen in the wash room and then began to clean his silk hat and coat with a llltlo rag nnd bottle of benzine. , The eccentric irawon was John I. Blair of Now.Torsoy , whose wealth is estimated at fabulous amounts , Ho is rated to bo worth from $4p,000,000to ; 8 100,000,000 , yet ho was seated in a porter's chair in the Pacific yesterday ncrubbing his old hat as if ho could novcrget another. Whllo Mr. Blair spends little money on himself ho is quite generous to others , and ninny kind deeds of charity are credited to hfs worldly account. Ho is a romnrkablo man , for although eighty-eight years old presents the appearance of ono at sixty , tind accomplishes twice as much as most young men. Ills business career was begun BO long ago that the present generation does not know him well. Ho built the greater portion tion of the Lacknwanna road , in vesting his own money nnd keeping every dollar of his securities , when Scmnton was a wilderness ho bought land in and around the place nnd saw it grow from nothing to a city of 100,000 people. Mr. Blair built and now owns half the roads in Iowa. The town of Blalrsvillo , N. J. , is owned by him. Of late years ho has made an immense amount of iiionoy in the west. Ho would lay out the route of a now road , mark the townsltcs along the line and buy up all the good land before the mib- Ho know of the line of the road. When the towns sprung up Mr. Blair had all the lots for sale. Miles' Xcrvo and Ijlvcr Pills. An Important discovery. They net on the llrcr , stomach nnd bowels through the nerves. A now principle. At a recent meeting of the California academy of sciences , says the San Fran cisco Chronicle , the president oxhioited some remarkably largo specimens of fungus of the proeruius or mushroom family. The stems measured nearly two feet in length , and the caps fourteen inches in diameter. These fungi were found growing under brandy casks in Charles Kohler's winery near Glen Ellen. They tire said to bo most excel lent eating and of the finest llavor. Prof. Elgermanil of the Albatross ex hibited a number of fish caught in seines near Vallojo. Ho reported that catfish were very plentiful there , as were fresh water smefls. The young of the latter were called ghost-fish , as they were as' transparent as water and clearer than the Sacramento river water. At the sumo catches young salmon two inches long and what are known as pipe-fish , were also ' secured. Ho also showed a specimen of a small fish with yhosphorescent qualities that was found about onp hundred fathoms deep at the new fishing banks recently discovered near San Diego. They are the special food of the roekcod and were found in the stomachs of the latter. There was no other way of securing specimens than by first catching the cod. As the fish are only found in cods caught during the night the new species has been termed "nocturnal" ilsh. They are about two inches long and of very slender build. Prof. Eigcrmann men tioned as a curiousfuet that when the cod are pulled up the pressure of the water so acts upon their internal organs that their stomachs protrude several inches from their mouths and their eyes are al most forced out of their heads. Aitcli is the peculiar name of a post- oflieo in Huntington county , Pennsyl vania , says the St. Louis Republic. Tlio origin of the nnmo , as ono might sup pose , is at the bottom of a curious and interesting story. Within a few miles of this little mull dispensary reside Iivo prosperous , well-to-do farmers , named respectively Anderson , Iscnborg , Tay lor , Crum and Henderson. When it became - came known that Undo Sum had decided to extend the mail facilities to that portion tion of "Penn's Woods" a rivalry sprang up between the well-to-do and prosper ous farmers , each desiring to give his name to the forthcoming postollieo. Nu merous meetings failed to Settle the mat ter , until nt last some peacemaking genius proposed to the rivals that each , in order as given above , contribute the first letter of his name , and thus form a word heretofore unknown in the geographical graphical glossary. . This was done ac cording to suggesiion , and behold the now word Aitcli sprang Into existence. The Only Ono.
