Women Doctors.
The Women's Alodieal college of this city
graduated forty physicians last week ,
says n Philadelphia paper. Forty
years ago there was no opportunity for a
woman to graduate as a physician in any In
stitution in the country ; and oven twenty
years ago a woman physician wasne.\tto a
Iroak in her community and contemptuously
frowned upon by the profession. Now. forty
women are graduated from one Institutioii.tii
a day , and there is a general popular Wt'leffmo ,
ol the softer sex to the practice of medicine.
There is not only no reason why yolIlcn
should not 1)0 ) physicians , but there are-many
and pressing reasons why they slurtdd prac
tice medicine. While there are Ii fe v things
in the practice that they might not toe as well
adapteil to as men , they arc quite as wll
adapted to oven the exceptional duties re
ferred to as male physicians are to many
delicate duties they now perform for women
without complaint. Jn a large majority of
the ailments to which humanity is .subject
women physicians , with equal intelligence
and skill , are certainly tlto i' iiud.4 > f men in
professional useliilness , ami tiiero are many
complaints of their own sex'which should
especially command the .services of women
.
The world 1ms advanced with wonderful
rapidity during the last half centtirv in the
recognition of tlio rights and capabilities of
women. It Is only forty-two years .since
married women In Pennsylvania had no right
over oven their own property acquired by
cither inheritance or their own labor , and
they were then practically unknown as
elers and saleswomen ; were little known as
teachers , and the profession * _ were regarded
as entirely beyond their roach. Now the
world has learned that woman is entitled
to just an even chance in every culling to
which she is at all adapted , and in medicine ,
liny and science she is now teacher and prac
titioner. The old prejudice against unsexing
women by giving them any opportunity out
side of the kitchen , the laumlrv und the nur
sery , was the creation of unmixed ignorance ,
and today the only just complaint that women
can make is against the yet prevalent custom
of paying women less than men are paid for
pieciseiy the same .service. Women are quite
as rctlncd now as they were when unknown
in the great battles of life. , and the whole ten
dency of the ago is toward the only manly
theory of giving women fair play all round.

This woman who sweeps by in the pay
