Ciishlii "ml Clioato Wore Dumb In
the .Society of Women.
The writer knows it for ti fact that the
Hon. ( . 'nlob C'u > hiii , who. with the ex
ception of the Hon. HufiH Clioato ( par
nubile fratruin ) . was the best nmn to s-it
nnd listen to ho hat > ever been acquainted
with , was substantiully dumb in the to-
cicty of women , says the Huston .Journal.
He either did not know how to talk to
them or he would not , and he could
scarcely look in the face of one of them
\\ithout blushing. lie could not look
them fairly in the eyes , in fact , nor
could he men either , lor that matter.
There s-eemed to be an unaccountable
timidity and shrinking about him , as
there was even about Clioato himself ,
great man at > he was.
And the writer would remark , in pass
ing , that he remembers , as to the latter ,
that one evening at one of the largo
hotels in Bostton there was a reunion , for
some purpose , of the graduates of Har
vard college in and about Boston , and
Choatc wab one of the invited guests.
The late brilliant .Tosiah Quincy. Jr. , ( a *
he vvab then ) , presided at the table with
liis usual inimitable grace and piquancy.
While the company were assembling the
writer ( then a very young man ) \vas
standing by hinihelf in a corner , vrhen
ChOate came in. with a slouchy gait and
his head down , looking as confu-ed as a
-cliool boy , and catching a glimpse of
the writer , he rushed eagcily toward
him and , grasping his arm , siitl sub
stantially , "You must help mo up to
the committee , ' ' who were landing
at the head of the hall receiving the
guerts. We had only advanced a few
steps , hovvexer , when Clioate , beiiijj dis
covered , was pulled hither and thither
by hosts of hands , and the writer was
left again to commune witli himself , or
with others like him and of his own age
\\lio happened to bo standing near ; not ,
however , before ho had ventured mod
estly to remark to Choato how surprised ,
he ivas that a man of his experience ali < l I
distinction should bo at all desirous of
thus walking under cover , as it were.
And I have stated in a previous paper
how he always molded as much as
possible the eves of men , and how
when walking from his olllco to his
house , he preferred to walk through
lanes and the narrowest rather than
through the broadest and most crowded
streets. Ilewi.sve-y peculiar in this
particular. I have it from authority
which cannot be questioned that Mr.
dishing once , at an evening party in
Xewburyport , attempting to make him
self agreeable , it is to be presumed , said
to a pretty , bright-eyed girl of seven
teen or eighteen summer.s. and quite
distinguished for her beauty and accom
plishments , in the circle of her young
admirer"Pray. . MNs , can you
tell me how love boginsV And she in
stantly replied , with a merry twinkle
and a smile , "Why , with L , of course , ' '
thus discoinlitting the distinguished
ceholar and statesman , and getting the
laugh of the .slanders upon him.

one aiiionj , nviny memories of promi
nent public characters stored away by
Mr. Ldvvard W. C'ox of the Donhipon
house is a recollection of having played
hand-ball at Snringlield , 111. , with Abra
ham Lincoln the day before the latter
vvat nominated for the presidency.
Before the nomination of Mr. Lincoln ,
Mr. Cox was traveling in the west for an J
oil house , says the Circinnati Timoa-
Star. During his- travels ho for several
days u cd trains which were full of people
ple bound forth" Chicago convention.
Mr. Cox and a fellow drummer , who was
out for a Xanesvillo ink house , polled all
the travelers they could reach , and found
the utmost enthusiasm for the Illinois
law ver.
Thoroughly convinced that Lincoln
would bo the nominee , the pair of drum
mers took a run down to Springfield to
see the coming man. They found no ex
citement there , and on asking to 8eo Mr.
Lincoln were told ho could bo found the
next da.v , wh'.cii was the ono before the
convention , down at the ball park play
ing handball , a game of which Mr. Lin
coln was passionately fond. Next day
they visited the mrk . and there they
found the man of destiny busily engaged
in batting a ball against a black brick
wall and endeavoring to strike it in Mich
a way that it would rebound out of reach
of his opponent. There was quite a
crowd sitting about watching the game.
Mr. Lincoln wore , among other gar
ments , a long-tailed , black coat and an
old felt hat. which tended to magnify
his tall , ungainly form and prominent
features , and he looked quaintly pictur
esque as he danced about , now hitting
the sphere a hard blow and again "baby-
Ing it" so easily that it barely reached
hitt antagonists. When Mr. Llncoln at
down on the players' bench , having finished -
ished a triumphant turn , Mr. Cox was
introduced to him. Mr. Lincon received
him cordially , asked if ho ever played
the game , commiserated with him when
Mr. Cox said ho didn't understand it
and ottered to teach him. Mr. Cox ,
however , was thinking of the conven
tion , and said :
"Mr. Lincoln , I believe you will bo the
nominee. " Mr. Lincoln laughed and
said : "I think not. I boltovo those
eastern chaj)3 will euchre UH out of It ,
but you are very kind to think I will bo
nominated , nnd 1 am muck obliged to
you. "
Finally ono "of the plajors dropped
out. and Mr. Lincoln invited Mr. C'ox to
"take a hand , ' Mr. Cox of course did
bo , for hous anxiuuH to play Uith the
man ho was sure would 1m nominated ,
and the gaum lasted some time , Mr ,
Lincoln displaying great iHl ami
strength. \ \ hen I ho game was HuNhi < d
Mr. Lincoln kept score for another set of
players by notching the points on n
.stick and culling out "score ' in n loud
voice.
