Kut-ly In the morning Mayor Slonnc's praises vccro hcnilded by a brass band that went from poll- In place to polling plnco discoursing music that was intended to inspire the mayor's ad herents with confidence In the success of their cause. Ktl .Johnston's canvass seemed to ho of n moro quint but effective nature. Ills men made but little noise , but | > crformed n lot of work they hoped would tell before the V ° "s ' 'I'Mtcd. " Cnrrlages were In plenty to carry the voters from wmil to ward. There appeared to bo innro worUera tlmn voters at each precinct all the morning. Marshal Maloney had plenty of < stra palicempii on duty to preserve order find they had little to do. The saloons were mostly all closed and few men were on the Kim ta showing signs of liquor. There was a very liuht poll of votes up to noon and there ( ! n < > telling who was ahead. It is pre dicted that if Johnston should show a major ity of ilOU on the fount Masson would defeat lloctor. If Johnston's majority full below that amount Mussun's friends gave up his election. Along during the noon hour an incipient Jljtht started at the Second ward , but it was ( | uelled before any serious ihinmgo was done. In the Third the pollen stopped u couple of brawls before they got fairly started. Hut one aiMTst had been made up to 1 o'clock and that was a plain drunk. In the afternoon the Johnston forces secured , a band and then : was tmislu for both sides durii'g ' the balance of the day. It looked as though tiio Johnston forces had reserved their strength for late in the day and would u" some ti-lling work during the afternoon. 1'Yom o'clock until the polls closed at 7 p. in. them was u heavy vote , polled by the packing house employes. At ! l o'clock Johnston's most conservative friends conceded his defeat but hung onto the hope that the tide mi ht bo turned by the in- lltienco of the packing houses on their men. It was a forlorn hope , nevertheless , and the citizens ticket met a complete Waterloo. A conservative estimate of the result , in the absence of u complete count from all the wards , gives the election of the whole demo cratic ticket by an average majority of : UM.i. Over l.MKI votes were , polled. The clerk's lists .showed 515 in the First ward , I SI in the Second , Ji-Sil in the Third and 15-1 in the Fourth. The citi/ens' ticket re ceived a majority in the Fourth ward only , and there it was 5'J on the head of the ticket. In the First ward , where the citizens expected to carry the day , they were defeated by over 140. 140.The result of the election demonstrates the inability iif the packing house pro prietors mid the stock yards company to control their men. Sloano's per- pcrsimal | > ptilarity , a positive democratic ma jority at all elections , mid a strong antipathy towards Kd Johnston were telling factions in in the result. Added to these elements of 1 strength on the democratic side was the part played bv the saloon men in the struggle. Those who were not against the citizen's inovo were certainly not for it. The winning ticket is as follows : MnvorW. . C ! . Sloane. rierk T. K. MeUulre. Treasurer -Thomas lloctor. I'olice Judge 1 * . J. King. C'otiiicilmen--l'atrick Kowley , James Dougherty , Kd Connelly , John O'ljourke. Member of School Hoard John U. Cwrroll , Hiclmrd Swift , M. O'Connor. Friends of the young woman at the factory interpreted the dream to bo a sure sign of niarriago and happiness for Li//.ie ; but Miss OVonnor- would not be consoled bv their reading of her fortune. A soprano , in an average city will bo paid , as it beginner , anywhere from 'r-OO to $ , ' 100 per annum , savs n writer in the Ladies' Homo .lotirnal. As she becomes better known , and is in moro ihprough command of her voice , she will average from $ * > 00 to fcSOO. Hoslon pays about fjliOO per annum holler to choir singers than any other city in my knowledge. Several sopranos t'liero reccivo yearly salaries of $1,000 and $ li00 ! , and a few $1,000. A woman with a good contralto voice will begin at an annual salary of $ l00 ! which , if she is successful , may rise to an average of * . ' ! 00. There arc two churches in I'liiladelphia , I believe , which pay their contralto.$100 ) ; butthis in cities outside of Hoston , which as with sopranos , average about $1'00 higher , is unusual. And oven a genuine alto that rarest of things in the o days will com mand but WOO to $100 per annum. The Hub , of course , docs putter than this , by adding $ 00 ; but even with this addition none of these salaries appear precisely extravagant , or to admit of much luxury in living , and salaries are rarely in creased. Should a rival church make nn offer for a voice , if the llrst church is de sirous of retaining it , the rival's price is overbid , and the voice is retained. A I\\K \ . Iliiiii Transaction.
