The truth must bo told that the boys , in anticiiition | of Muster , have , in some hole in Ihd mow , or berne barrel in the wnjron-houso , boon liidinsr eygs. If the yountfstorrt understund their buslncs-i , they will compromise the matter , and HOC that at least a small supply t' ° cs to the house every day , writes Kbv. T. Do Witt Talmaifo in the Ladies' Homo Journal. Too prcat fjrcod on the part of the boy will discover the whole plot , and the charge will bo made : "Do Witt , I bcliovo you are hiding the CL'tfi. ! ' ' Forthwith the boy is collared and compelled to disgorge his posscb- sions. Xow. there is nothing moro trying tea a boy t him , after great trouble in ac- cuinululing tlioso shelly resources , to have to ptaco them in a basket nnd bring them fai-tli to the light two wecUs before Kapler. Boys , thereforeintinngc with blcill and dexterity. About this time of the yoat- you see them lurking much about the barrack and hay-loft. You see them crawling out from stacks of htraw and walking away rapidly with their liands * behind thorn. Tl.oy look very i 1111 ocout. for I have noticed that thu lee it of innocence in boys is proportionate to the amount of mischief with which they nro stuffed. They seem to bo determined to risk their lives on mow poles whore the hay is thin. They como out from under the stable lloor in a despicable state of toilet , and cannot give any excuse for their depreciation of apparel. liens llutter oil' tl'o nest with an unusual hquawk. for the boys cannot wait any longer for the slow process of laying , and hens have no business to otui'ul in the way of Easier. The most tedioua hours of my boyhood were spent in waiting for a lion to got oil' her nest. Xo use to scare her oil , for then she will got mad , and just as like as not take the egg with her. indeed , I think the boy is excusable for his liable il his brother has it dozen eggs and ho has only eleven. At this season of the year the hens nro melancholy. They want to hatch , but how can they ? They have the re quisite disposition , and the capacity , and the feathers , the will and the ncfat , and cver.ytliing but the oggs. With that deficit , they sometimes sit obsti- nnlely and defy the boy's approaches. Many i boy has felt the sharp bill of old Dominick strike tlio back of his hand , inflicting a wound that would have roused the whole farm house to see what the mutter was , had it not been that the boy wanted to excite no suspicion ns to the nature of his expedi tion. Immediately over the lion's head comes the boy's cap , and there is a scat- toration ot feathers all over the nay mow and the boy is victor. But at last th > evening before Raster comes. While the old people are on the pia//i : Ihe children como in with the accumulated treasures of many weeks and put down the baskets. Eggs , large and binall. white shelled and brown , Cochin Chinas and Burrampoot- ers. The character of the hen is vindi cated. The cat may now ho in the sun without being kicked by false suspicions. The surprised exclamation of parents more than compensates the boys for the strategy of long concealment. The meanest thing in the world is for father and mother not to look burpiiscd in such circumstances. April. 1'iillct' Horns Jo'irnttl. It is an almost absololo practice , and its twin cheat , ring-dropping , not less disused , says the London Guide. "What is this ? ' * says the dropper. "My wiggyl if this is not a leather purse with money ! Ila ! ha ! ha ! Let's have a look at it. " Whileho unfolds its contents his companion comes up and claims a title lo a shn.ro. "Not you , iiitleodl" replies tlio Under ; "this gentleman was next to mo , was not you sir ? GAB ON BOGUS DRESS REFORM A HltJcotiH ( Jnitihlnntlnn of Hones , Muslin nnd Cords Silver Displacing Smelling liottli'H -G ( Hl Society. Goiglp Aliout Gmvns. NEW YoiiK , Miiroh 'Jo. [ Spccinl to Tun BIH. : ] Among Iho various notices about reform In clothing It is iMthoi * startling ; to read an opinion headed , "SUlns will not bo xyornl'1 I'orsonallv I was su111cieally ignorant to wonder if the next gonoratlon of women werJ go ing to bo sufficiently healthy to sit in their bonc.s anil do without any exterior covering. It was an interesting thing to think out , but nt the same time , it seemed a , little odd , so I concluded to read the rest , of the paragraph , and I discovered it was the usual announcement that the frocks of the coming woman would bo modeled on hygienic principles , that the present woman was carrying about a superfluous weight of clothing ; that the coming woman would wear combin ation undergarments ; and her clothes would leave no-weight on the hips and as Httlo weight as possible anywhere else ; that the corset , must go and that the woman of the future would bo n healthier and more vigorous individ ual than the one of today , and that she would not wear a , seal or other skin over garment. Now , this all sounds beautifully , but it's out-and-out non sense , and makes you want to call it what the London street boy docs , "Tommy rot. " I suppose the coming woman wouldn't say that , unhappy wretch. The present woman , all dressed re forms to the contrary , is sensibly clothed. As our houses are huated with furnaces wo huvo loarnctl to wear the lightest clothing in the house , and to assume dark garments when wo go outside. As for combination undergar ments , they ruin the temper of the av erage woman to get into , they are ab solutely unbcautiful , and the reform corset is , without any exception , the most USILISS : : AND IIIUKOUS COMDIXATIOX of bones , muslin and cords that I have ever seen. The woman of today wears her sKirts a sensible length for the street. In the house she has the priv ilege of wearing them whatever length she wishes. Her walking boots have sensible broad heels , her sleeves are not tightunit it is considered extremely bad form to lace. A wcll-mado French corset is n thousand times more sensible and more comfortable , for it shapes it self to the ligure , than the utterly un shapely and unwomanly combination of muslin and bones that the reformers are trying to foist on the general wom an. 'Ilie average woman knows very well that if she laces her nose will get red , and she is not likely to bring such a catastrophe on herself. As for carry- ins burdens on her hips , they are not obliged to do it ; but certainly the 'good Lord built women that way , and the heaviest burden that comes to them to carry is put upon the hips and is nat ural. ural.A A woman I know who has not had a single cold this winter , who did not get the grip and every season before lias had in II ue n/a in every form , attributes it en'tiroly to the fact that she has les soned and lightened her undorsrarmcnts and made heavier her outside ones. Her rooms arp at summer heat ; her un derwear consists of a silk vest , a pair of lawn drawers , long silt ; stockings , a light weight llanncl skirt , a silk sldrt , and then her corsets. Xono of her gowns are heavy , but when she goes out into the cold air she assumes a heavy fur coat that is really like that famous one of Kal/.ae'dScraphita"warni to the soul. " Wo do not want so much reform in dress among women as wo want exorcise of individual common sense. To find out the cause of unhap py Directs , and to arrange your belong ings in the future so that the cause is removed , can bo done without lectures against the corset , against pretty under wear , or against all tire frivols and frou frous that tend to make women some thing more than the female of man. WHY AVOMIJX SHOULD LOOK 1'IIiriTY. Any woman whoso draperies are cov ered with Illth , as one of the reformers wrote , on a , muddy -day is a slovenly woman , who would bo slovenly under any conditions , and the putting on of combination undergarments would never imiKO that woman anything else but untidy and undesirable. I Uelievo that women should look pretty it is probably a frivolous liking on my part but as they are the llowors of the human garden , the walking llowors , they should bo as oxquisifo in appear ance as possible , and the word "oxquls- ite , " by the by , can describe a perfectly lilting cloth costume worn on a rainy day as well us a ball-dress or a tea- gown. The day of the long smelling-bottle , which the smart girl used to Ilourish as a policeman did his club , has gone by , and the enormous glass monstrosities , like stray pins , huvo disappeared , dear only knows whore. Instead , tiny silver Husks that depend from the ohatclaino , ones of gold enamel or glass duplicating some famous ones of the past.aro chosen , and unlikn the silver ones are not car ried around , but are put here , there and everywhere among the bric-a-brac on my lady's tables. The perfume is no longer the one H'IIO lior-uU favors for p'-U-sonal use , but Instead some eurlos pungent o.lor is selected , the olToi-t nf wliion is to tone ono up as a spoonful of some liquor might. Old Chino e scents are specially pri/.cd , but ono which the chemist can assure the buyer is an old Egyptian recipe is eagerly purchased , and no matter how study It may smeller or how suggestive of mummies it may bo is cojiited of great value. IIHAUTY I'ATCHKS AS IIIIUCS. With the vinaigrettes on the table of trilles there is also distributed curious onaniolod boxes that formerly held the patches that decorated some doad-and- gene beauty's face. The craze for collect- ingthoso boxes ison the incroasoand con noisseurs have found out that the demand exceeds the supply , and consequently imitation ones are on the market and hnvn to ho "bowardod of. " A box of Royal Dresden bound in gold , with a looking glass I aside the lid , is vouched for as having belonged to Louise I a Valllero , and the possession of it has given inoro unalloyed pleasure to ono woman than over came to the writer of a theological novel or an exhorter agnlnt woman , as she is. She has studied up the history of France ; she has traced the career of the Durho&i la Valliore ; she has wept over her sorrows rows ; she has smiled with her in her triumphs , and nho has followed her to her grave , believing that if her stu was great , her rcpcjitonco had surely wiped It out. There Is sometlilni ? csaontlally line In a woman liking to cpUcH womanlv be longings. It is a muuTilkucnor feminin ity that displays UseiIn ' this wiv thin Is shown by the gatlidrlng together of ugly Japanese poi'coluty'g , of huge black bronzes , and of P. | UWM on wiiat the astral body of man would do if the ma terial one did not govern U. If I were a man I would much rather marrv a woman who sat four lioiu's at an nui'tlon to bid on a watch once owned by Marie Antoinette than I would one who spent the siimo four hours HI careering round getting signatures to a petition to raise the status of woman and make her a self-protecting citizen. She ought not to ho s self-protectl'ig citizen. She ought to be procctod iy : a man. The Lord meant It that way else ho wouldn't have made Adam Ili-nt , and there never was a word said in the Blblo about women earning their living by the sweat of tholr brow. Self-protect ing , forsooth ! She c.ui take the most beautiful care of herself in the world , if you can only lot her got close enough tea a man to nlako him understand how much she needs his protection , and how determined ho is that she shall have her own way. MltS. MAUl'IN''S KNOUMt Cl'STOM. The fashionable woman , as illustrated by Mrs. Bradley Martin , has introduced an English custom here that is very sensible. In a city where the porto eochorc is seldom seen , the stops of my lady to her carriage , when her feet are clothed in satin slippers , have always boon.vory dainty ones , unless she wore very heavy overshoes to protect the pretty satin. She has changed all that by having her footman roll down from the doorstop to the carriage a strip of carpeting , over which she walks 7ith unsoiled feet. Wo are rat her given to lauirhing at English fashions , but this is ono worth following , for it means that in damp weather the foot arc protected from ttio cold , and at other limes the thin slippers , instead of touching the chilly stone , sink into a warm carpet such as they are supposed lo iread upon. WHAT IS OOOJJ SOCIETY ? Somebody said they would like lo get into coed society. It started the ques tion. Wnat is good society ? Good society is that where toadyism is frowned down upon and scandalmongers gers are not admitted. Good society is that where one earns one's title of gentlewoman not only by birth , but by good manners. Good society is that where men" are respectful , whore oil-color stories are not told , and where the women do not smoke cigarettes. Good society is that where to under stand Greek is of less importance than to understand courtesy in all its laws. Good socioty'is that which is not personal - ' sonal in its talk , but which finds siilll- cient topic of interest to discuss with out dilating on thu sins of its neigh bors. bors.Good society is that where the art of welcoming the coming and speeding the parting guest is graciously practiced. Good society is that where women are not hastily judged , but once they are behoved lo be untrutnful , deceitfuland ill-bred , they are ostracized. Good society is that which can give a dinner without sending a notice of it to the newspapers , can introduce a daugh ter without having her frocks nvido the subject of a paragraph , and which be- lio'vcs that the family and its happiness is oi more importance than the boom- ingot a beauty or the being counted among the four hundred. Good society is that which , while it recogni/.es the value of all the conven tional ruloe , is yet snfHeiontly strong lo be guided occasionally by hearts , and not of necessity lo follow a leader a sheep do. Good society is that where a mother knows her daughter and her son are safe. Good society.my friend , is that which is formed when two or three are met together in pleasant converse. You can , if you will , though yours be only a room in a boarding house , make the best society in the world lliore. BAIL 8Ali'K IRAKIS NOl'KS.
