[ Special Telo- ( jnun to TIII > UKI.J The extraordinary en terprise of the now southwest , Its rapidly in creasing resources and far-rcachlnir Inllu- cnco upon commerce and capital have been fully demonstrated in the proposed removal of the Kankakco wo'olen mills to Laredo , Tex. This is an established institution of eighteen years , mid the people here are loth to see It go. > ir. T. O. McCulloh , sr. , win found in his ofliccat the mill this afternoon , and in n moment wis discoursing enthusi astically and intelligently upon the awakened business spirit discovered by him in recent trips to Laredo. "They received us with open arms , " said Mr. McCulloh. "No trouble was too great , no hospitality too generous for then ) to ex tend to us. Wo ( myself and Mr. D.iv ) went there with very crude ideas about the Tex- nn3. Instead of a community of cowboys and Krcasurs according to the prevailing northern idea wo find u city of 20.000 people ple , intelligent , prosperous und bustlmi ; with enterprise. The Laicdo Improvement com pany and the board of trade convinced us in the shortest possible time that they wanted us and would have us if liberal inducements would briiiK us. From a earoful investiga tion of the situation , I am convinced that this is the most promising Held in the United States for the manufacture of our line of goods. It is in the very best of the wool- producing territory , with an unlimited mar ket for jcnnt , light woolen fabrics and blankets. The peopla there told usgwtiat they would do for us , and wo came homo to lay the matter before oui'stockhold- ers. Wo are bound , under our agreement , when rnlttled by the company , to have cur mill in operation , with fifty hands by thb 1st of October. Mr. lli'-inlton telegraphed mo a few days ago that tuo bonus was all col lected and In the bank. Our stocKholders are men who are permanently identified with other interests , and must , of course , overcome their natural scruples to transfer- ing their money to a distant Held , or I must induce them to soil their stock to myself or other parlies who will take tlio mill ' .o Laredo. Our plant is almost now and com pletely tills our two-story buildimr. 50x125. Wo have the largest sl/.od c.irds ( U'J-tnch ) in use , and the largest mules. Everything is In llrst class shape , and we shall bo able to run with the utmost smoothness from the very start. "For myself I shall leave Ivankakeo with rcluctaiicc.but the advantages of being at the very fountain head of the supply of tlio raw material and on the threshold of a vast and growing nmrltet cannot bo ignored. When wo llrst bomiu operations in Kankakcc , wo bouL'ht all the wool wo needed from local growers , but during the last llvo yours we have been compelled to go Into the Chicago and St. Louis markets and buy there from second hands , while the market for our goods was northern Wisconsin , Michigan and Minnesota. Hosidus , wo paid freight on 00 to TO par cent shrinkage In tlio wool. My idea is that Laredo can bo made the gioat wool market of this country. I expect to establish in connection with the mill , ox- tunsivu scouring works. This will enable us to bring all the woolen manufacturers of the country to Laredo to buy their wool , already scoured , and thus save the expunsu to them of the shrinkage. This would bo nn Important item to the buyers In New England , for instance , anJ it would boa yist gain to the grower , also , who would sell his crop at lu pur pound moro net prollt , to say the least , and undoubtedly for much moro than that. On n clip of 113,000 pounds , which is the si/o ot ono clip In thu neighbor hood of Laredo , this would yield a hand some increase to the producer. For n whllo there appeared the posni- bility of a second chapter to the sen sational story published concerning Hcv. Mrs. Collins received povorul thou sand dollars from various insurance com- panics , and among the agents \\lio paid her policies was Joseph Ogdcn , who now rosldns in Omaha. The principal mourner was John 'limmms. Ho is ono of the saw mill hands , n quiut , easy gentleman , who hoped against hope. From him the story of the missing ones was obtained. Saturday afternoon , as is alleged by a gen tleman named Hunn. who resides ton miles above Hlaii % the party passed his place on its way to De.vitur. Last night thcro arrived in Florence Mrs. Con Leach. She had been visiting her mother m Hlair. Half u do en moth ers immediately rushed to the scene to search for their children , and all succeeded In llud- ing their loved ones. Then some ono circulated the story that the drowned ones had come fsom Florence. The names of some of the missmg ones as given above were mentioned.
