BULLION IN A ClicK.

TUo publlcntion ol the story of the
( liht-ovory of the ohl Spuniah fort on
Iotl { river hns tlovolopod tt still more in-
tcrostiiifr tnulitiou thtit hits hitherto
boon xnimhlisned. It Is .a most Inter
esting chiipter of the curly history of
this section , says n Parla , Tox. , tolu-
Ki'um to the Now York Herald. The
imrrutor of this tale Is C'olonol Mort
Uavfidulo of this city , who is now
seventy-live years old , und who caino
to this country with his parents more
than seventy years ago. Ho says that
in JSlf > a party of forty men loft Alex
andria , La. , with a caravan of nuilos
loaded with goods and wont to Iho
newly discovered gold Hold at Santa. J-'o ,
N. M. Thcso goods wore sold at
fabulous prices , and the party started
back ( o Louisiana with eleven mules
loaded with gold in the latter part of
the Buinmor of 181(5. ( .
/rhoy wore coming down the north
side of the Red river , as what was
known as the Santa Fo trail followed
that bit-cam. Near Lake West , a'uottt
forty miles northwest of hero they wcro
attacked by Comanehos. Being otit-
iiuinborcd. they threw the bullion into
a crook aud crossed to this Bide of the
river.
They camped at the mouth of Red
Branch , twenty-three miles north-east
of here , whore they wore -ngnin at
tacked , and all killed except thrco
men , ono of whom was a Mexican. On
their way to Alexandria one of 'tho
men died from hardship and exposure.
The other reached the homo of hibAin-
clo on the Knpides river , but died in a ,
short lime. The Mexican is supposed
to have made his way back to Mexico.
Before his death the young mp.n gave
his uncle the particulars of the battle
nnd a diagram covering the place
where the gold had been thrown fnto
the crook. Years afii'rward the undo
wont up the river and hunted for tno
place , but was unablu to Iind it. Ho
told the story to t'ollmel Kaysdalo nnd
gave him the diagram , The ultico
where the battle was fought was found.
Large numbers of human bones were
there , and at various times gun barrels
had been picked up on the spot. AU of
them , except ono , had thu mu//lo but
tered and had otherwise boon broken
by the Indians. None of them wore
loaded , which confirms the young man'a
story that they hold the Indians at bay
until their ammunition was oxhtuiblcd.
On the opposite bide of the river , a-
few miles away , two moro gun barrels
of thp sumo kind were found in tnof-iuno
condition. Just before tie | war a Mexi
can gentleman cuino to ljaris who. said
ho was a nephew of the survivor of the
massacre. IIo employed a Mexican
named Pedro , who lived here , to go
with him tvtho territorry to look , it
was supposed , for the lost bullion.
In a few days Pedro cnmn back with
the Mexican's horse and pistol. It was
then said that there was no doubt but
that Pedro murdered his countryman ,
but thorp was no proof of it.
The pistol was worn during his serv
ice In the confederate army by Captain
Milton Webb , of this city. At various
times different people have looked for
the treasure in a desultory way , but no
protracted orsystomatio searchhasovor
boon made.
The early settlers , who were BO famil
iar with the story of. the lost treasure ,
were too bubily engaged in the struggle
for oxistcnco to dcvoto any time to look
ing for something that there was Jioth-
ing definite about.
There is no doubt nbotit the party of
Louisiana traders being lost , but who
tho.v were is not known , for no one here
remembers any of their names.
ANCIENT THEATERS.
Capacious ht.tei-H null Oilil Corridors
Itiillt on tlm Giro in I'lnn.
The earliest theaters were those of
the Greeks , which had their outer walls
containing rather moro than a Eomlcir-
elo. There was an inner concentric
circle , the diamo'er of which was one-
third that of the theater. The spuco
included in this smaller oirclo was
called the orchestra or pluco for dnno
Ing , and was devoted to the chorus. The
width of the stugo was twlco the diame
ter of the orchestra , and its depth ono-
seventh of that diametor.
The Roman theaters were modeled on
these of Greece , but the orchestra was
much smaller , ns the choriid did not oc
cupy such un important part. The
outer walla rarely exceeded a semicir
cle , and the orchestra , instead of be
ing devoted to the chorus , was oc
cupied by the seats of the spectators
of the highest tank in the btato.
The stage was more capacious than in
the Circuit thcator , being twice the
diameter of the orchestra in length .and
one-fourth in depth , ao as to nlTord
space for the chorus on the stage.
Round every ancient theater was a
corridor , forming a space between the
outer wall and an Inner concentric
wall. Over the corridor wore seats
aomotlmcs used by ladies ; and the space
between thoFO miitn and the orchestra
WIIH occupied by rows of seats connect
ing with the outer wall aiul rising like
wide stairs , so that the spectators
plncod their feet on the next lower
row.
row.Tho ficonn was at the back of the
stage , and usually represented u street ,
or the front of a palace , or u wood.itnd
could bo changed to suit the locality of
the play , lioliinil the BCOIIO was the
posteconium , in which murders und
other parts of the play were sometimes
bupposcd to take pluco. At the side of
