Depravity. If there Is such a thing ns total depravity this city can furnish nn c.xauiulo of it. A case was brought to the attention of the au thorities yesterday that is certainly without n parallel in the history of the Bluffs. The details of the horrible affair are too disgustIng - Ing nnd nauseating to appear in print. It is nllcL'ed that HattloBanther , an olovon-ycar- old girl living In what is known us "Duck Hollow , " nt the upper end of Harrison Btreet , was criminally assaulted by n quin tette of inhuman Hands several days ago , and that they compelled her by threats to return to the place- n few days later. The child resides with her half brother , Charles Banthcr and his wife , and Mrs. Banther tool : the girl to Dr. Waterman on Tuesday afternoon , but ho re ferred her to County Attorney Organ ns the proper partx to toke stops to have the llonds brought to justice. No information has as yet been Illed , but the matter will bo pushed today. Dr. Waterman states that thcro Is not the slightest doubt but the child has been horri bly maltreated , but ho scouts the story ns tola by her. She is very contradictory in her statements , nnd from her us well ns from other sources it was learned that ever slnco last September this torrlblo state of nffaiis has existed , She also tells disgust ing stories of her life in Kansas City before she came hero two years ago. All ol the partices implicated are grossly ignorant and rcsido in dug-outs under the bluffs. The men rungn in ago from twenty- two to fifty-four years. How such shocking immorality could exist almost In the heart of the city can hardly bo surmised. The most horrlblo feature In connection with the whole matter cannot bo told or oven hinted at , nnd It is hardly possible that the nvorago reader could conceiveof such depths of depravity ns have cotno to light in connection with tnis case. The eager lookers-on wanted to see the case given to the jury , and the impression seomcd quite prevalent that after the jury had received it there would bo but a few moments further wailing to hoar the announcement of "not guilty1' which seemed sure to come and that right speedily. It was 4 o'clock when the jury retired. The minutes passed into an hour and the disappointed waiters began to scatter for homo. A verdict will probably bo announced this morning. Should a Coralcan , in rovonjjo for in jury done to liimsolf or his relations , or even to his do < j or his horsp , kill an other with knife or coup do fusil , pub lic sympathy sustains him , the hills shelter him , his relations feed him and and justice in the shape of gendarmes winks with both eyes unless the mur- clui-or bo very unpopular. True ho is termed a "bandit , " and 1ms to take refuge in the maqui , as the natural bush is called that clothes the mountain sides , says the English 'National Re view. Well-informed Corsieans toll one that there are at this moment in the island over ono thousand in hiding. But plcaso understand the bandit is no brigand. Should you defenseless , hai > - pen to fall in with him ho will not take your purse , but on the contrary offer you food it ho has it and shelter in his cave , and most probably _ refuse any pay ment for his hospitality. It is only his foe's family against which 1m wages wart and of course in sclf-dofcnsu against the gendarmes. These latter ho will shoot with as much unconcern as a woodcock. And yet because the Corsican does not rob you it is not bo- ctiuso ho cloos not , love money. For n very few francs , both Corsican gentle men and English residents aver , you can find a man who will do your killing for you and rid you of your enemy with knife or bullet. And while this utter contempt for human life prevails there can bo no hope of the extinction of the vendetta. An English gentleman , Captain G. , who bus now lived for some ton or fif teen years in Corsica , on his own prop erty , told'mo the following story : It seems that one of the employes of the former proprietor , fancying ho had some grudge against the now owner , made himself objectionable by break ing down fences , driving goats and sheep into the gardens , and annoying Captain G. in other ways. Captain G. happened to mention the fact of the man's enmity , and doolorcd it as un reasonable , both to a Corsican gentle man , a neighboring proprietor , and also to a fahophord with whom ho was on friendly terms. ' 'Lot mo know if it continues , " said the gentleman , ' 'and I will have the man taken over to yonder rocks and you won't hoar of him again. " "I will arrange For a little coup do fusil whenever you like to give mo 'tho ollicc. ' " said the berger , This was liftecn years ncrp , but oven now it is said there is in Ajaccio alone at least ono murder a week , though those outrages are so hushed up by the authorities that it is dilllcult to got any reliable statistics. I never , for instance , saw the account of any murder in the little local French nanor. Lo Raillomont. the only one , I think , in Ajaccio , but this proves nothing , for there was un doubtedly ono atrocious crime commit ted in the village of Bocognano , about twenty miles oil , while wo were at Ajac cio , for particulars of which I vainly studied the columns of Lo Kaillomont. The olllcial whoso duty it was to investigate the matter had wanted to requisition from the liv ery stable keeper the carriage I had be spoken , sol hoard the story from the mail's own mouth. The victim was an Italian who had married and settled at Bocognnno. The Italians are called lucquas by the Corsieansand came over from Italy in largo numbers. They are very industrious , and do a great deal of the hard work of the island. Tholr ex ample of Industry excites the Corsican's jealousy , but not his emulation ; hence there is little love lost botvoon thorn. It appeared that the pig of a Corsican wandered near the open cottage door of an Italian , and to drive it olT the latter throw a stono. whereupon the wife of the Corsican indignantly demanded of her husband it an Italian was to throw stones at a Corsican pip with impunity. The Corsican at once wont into his house , nud returning with his gun , shot the Italian dead on the spot. The mur derer escaped to the macqui , and is , I presume , there still , unless the oxVonu- ating circumstances of the victim being a lucqua has enabled him to return un molested to the bosom of his family. * The IjQndor'H Advnntnuo. Embodied in the note or mortgage on a western farm nro all concolvalilo pro- vibious for the protection ot the lander. Interest is made payable somi-unnually , and is represented by interest coupons that bear interest from maturity at the highest legal rate , writes Prof , .lames Willis Glecd In the March Forum. The borrower assures the payment of the taxes , and agrees to keep the buildings Insured for the bonolltof the mortgagee. The transaction may have such a history as this : the first interest coupon is paid ; the second is defaulted. The company remits to the custom In vestor , and then declares the whole debt duo on account of the default. The borrower wishes to nay up and have the loan reinstated. The company than collects ( ho amount of the defaulted in terest , with interest compounded thoron at the highest lagal rate , and a further commission , or bonus , for rein stating or renewing the loan. W. llt Elbourno , timer for the motor rail way company , was nt the pollco court yes terday to cntor n protest ngainat a danger ous practice that has bccomo alarmingly prevalent among the small boys of the city 'who resldo in the vicinity of the motor tracks , and especially In the neighborhood of Twenty-fourth nnd N streets. It is the habit of thcso boys , sometimes In swarms of n dozen , to hang onto the plat forms of the cars during the process of switching Just south of N street. A business man near the comer ol Twen ty-fourth and N streets , who didn't want his name mentioned , expressed himself quito sensibly In regard to this matter. "I have watched with some apprehension this pro miscuous practice , " ho said , "and expect al most any day to bo called out to look nt n maimed nnd mangled boy. The city can't afford to keep an ofllcer stationed at the corner of Twenty-fourth and N streets to prevent the foolhardy actions of the boys nor can tbo motor com jany be reasonably expected to station a man Micro for that pur pose. A wholesome lesson might bo admin istered if a batch of the youngsters were ar rested , ana than their parents would sea that tholr children stopped it. With the coming of the warmer weather the number of children on the street will increase ) and n greater danger of accidents will follow. If something Isn't done there will bo some less children in several families nnd their parents will realize the danger of tlio thing , " Every frequent traveler on the motor cars in nnd out ot South Omaha has had the pos sibility of n fatal accident brought to his mind by witnessing the foolhardy efforts to steal a few blocks of a ride by those young sters. Ho was fast "getting on a tear" par don the slang and every few minutes ho would gctdown _ on all Jours , caper around and turn hand-springs. "How's this ? Is that a trick r.it yov'vo got there ? " "Oh , no. I just now caught him. Ho never tasted any Lincoln county till a few minutes ago. All you have to do is to spill a little on a rat. Ho would lick it olT anil like it so well that there is no further trouble. ' llo just walks back and fairly begs for moro. " The priest of Bacchus continued to dose out his magic potions , and his vie- tim passed out ot the hilarious state and wanted to fight ; then ho began to reel and stumble , and in a minute moro was stretched put drunk , drunk as a lord. The priest of the jolly god then opened the door of the wire cage and rolled tno drunken votary upon the lloor , raised his head gently and placed beneath the neck a largo cork stopper. Then lie reached for the cheese-knife , and brought it with a sudden , skillful swish across the victim's neck. The sacrillco had been made ; painlessly , nnd , pleasantly , the rat passed away to the spirit land of his fathers. "Lincoln straight ! " "A little weak cider , please. " And this is the way to kill a rat. I might also add a little snake. Knrcka. The motto of Callfornia means , I have found it. Frank Damok , a member of the snort ing fraternity of Chicago , has probably the queerest deck of cards in the world' , says the Chicago Tribune. Ho has been twenty years collecting the pack , and is exceedingly proud of it. Ho ilrst began by picking up playing cards in the street when ho happened to run across them. In this way ho got fifteen or more before ho began striking dupli cates. Some davs ho would liiul two or three , and then it would bo months before - fore ho would BOO another stray paste board. But lie persevered and always ' kept his eyas'opon to add to his strange collection. In ton years ho had all but thirteen cards necessary to complete his dock. In the no.xt three years ho considered himself lucky in Uncling all but four. The missing ones were tlio jack of clubs the ciouco of diamonds , the eight-spot of diamonds and the troy of spades. In the course of another year ho picked up the eight of diamondsand six months later was overjoyed to flml what ho at lirht thought , was a lull doelc of cards lying on the sidewalk on Dear born strcot , between Adams and Jack son streets. Ho thought nit ) long search was at an end , nnd that ho could easily complete his wonderful dock. The jack of clubs and troy of spades were there all right , but llvo or six cards were missing , and among thorn the douca of diamonds. " It seemed as though ho would never bo able to secure his llfty-sccond card , but the other day ho onto re it ono of the suburban trains on the Northwestern , and almost the llrst thing he saw was the deuce of diamonds face upwards in the aisio. It was gilt-udgod and glossy backed , thu finest of thorn all. Ho had been semi-oiling for it for four and ahalf years , nnd breathed a sigh of relief. The pack is composed of cards of all qualities , from the cheapest to the highest priced. Some are clean arid bright , and others are soiled and well worn. How n I'rosiilcnt IK llnniporcil. Every president .wishes to have a good , honostf successful and popular ad ministration ; and would , if loft to him self , make few changes , save in the ad visory olllcos of the government , writes 1'roU A. A ROYAL GRANT. Three Colored Women Claim nn im mense Canadian Kstntc. In a suite of coxy little rooms over No. 167 Clinton strcot , liyo a family of three colored womenwho , it is claimed , are the descendants of a royal African line , says a Buffalo ( N. Y. ) dispatch to the Globe-Democrat. March 112 , 1887 , Mrs. Hannah Leo Atkins died at the romarlcablo ago of lOi years. Accord ing to the statements of this family , the father of Mrs. Atkins was a son of Tombut , who was king of Guinea , and ruler of the richest and most powerful and intelligent of African tribes , and whose idiigdom extended along the gold coast , oil' Cape Sierra Leone , well into the interior. In 1701 the young prince , aged ton years , with a brother , aged ojght y.cars , were kid napped from thaii" native country by an English slave hunter. Subsequently tlio boys were given to King Ucorgu III. , who had them educated. Both went to Canada and remained thoro. As reward for services in the English army William Lee , as ho was known , was given a grant of 1,000 acres by King Gcorgo. The land granted Leo by tno English government embraces some of the most valuable city tracts in thf > section where it is located. The grant comprises four deeds , ono involv ing liOO acres situated in Drummonds- villo , Out. ; anothor.400 acres in Mai- den.Ont. , ana the third and fourth , fiOO acres in Chatham. Out. , ( llarwSelc at the time the grant was executed ) . T.IIO entire 1,000 acres , it is claimed by the three daughters , are now worth about $1,500,000. It is now in possession of a number of squatters who have built upon it and leased It to numerous others. The money left by Leo at the time of his death , aside from tlio land , amounted to * SO,000 , which ho willed in sums of. S-10,000 to each of his two daughters , and winch is now and has since been in the hands of the Canadian government. Tlio death of William Leo having occurred some eighty years agothe $10,000 which was left to the mother of the Misses Field , and which , of course , reverses to the latter , must by this time , with ac crued interest , amount to quite a largo fortune in itself. Since 1SG7 , three years after llic death of Km ma Fields , the mother of the living children , the latter have boon contesting in the Ca nadian courts for the estate , the first suit having boon instituted in that year and two others since , the last _ in 1SS5. All thrdo suits have been inolTectual , owing , the prosecuting side asserts , to the intrigues of the attorneys for the squatters , they having succeeded oacli time in having the case adjourned. Stops are now being taken to bring an other suit , this time In tlio English courts , to recover the land _ or its value and damages for retention. A OlilnoNo "llcnrsc. " Lew Low , who is known in Chinatown as "Tho Hoarse" for an undertaking establishment , came very near getting himself into trouble yesterday after noon , says the San Francisco Mvaminer. Low was notified that a Chinese hey of three years was dead at 001 Dupont street , llo went to a room in the top story , and , talcing the little one's body , slutted it into a straw bag filled with charcoal. On tjio way to the undertaker's the dead baby's head jutted up just suffi cient to attract the attention of a passer by , who followed "tho hoarse" and saw h'im outer the undortukor'u. With visions of murder in his mind the shadow hied himself to Detective Cox , and reported what ho had 'eon. The detective investigated the mutter and found that the child had died from natural causes. "Why was the body put in a sack half filled with charcoulV" aslccd an Ex aminer ro porter. "Well.
