Dr C. 11. Plnney of Council Bluffs last

apprehensions for the safety of nn old couple
by the unuio ot Jones , who have bocn living
upon ouo of his farms adjoining Seymour
Pnrr ) on the west , thrco miles west of South
Omaha The story told by the doctor Is as
follows : About the 1st ot lust Docombcr bo
rented the form for this your to A , B. Cnd-
walloder , who has resided for the past year
on the Hughes farm , boUvocn this
city and Mautiwa Mr Caduwal-
luder has made preparations to move
next week , but us there wns
some stock which the doctor desired to win
ter on the farm , it was necessary for someone
ono to slav there Accordingly , Mr Cad
wallador made urrangements for his who's
parents , who were visiting a sod , Fred
Jones , nt Irvlngton , five miles north of the
farm , to move down nnd look nttor the stock
until bo should move ever The old coupln
went to the farm about tbomlddlo of Decem
ber , and were visited ovcry week by Mr
Cadwalladcr Ho had visited them on the
Sd Inst , nnd took over some provisions Ho
told thorn that bo was going to Chicago with ,
some cattle Jbr Leonojd Warner , the Clii-
cage stock dealer , who has a
largo stock farm in the county ,
but that ho would move over
as soon as ho returned Ho said that
his wife would visit them while ho was gene ,
and see that their wants wcro looked after
Ho left last Monday for Chicago wltb the
cattle On Tuesday Mrs Uadwallader and
her stepson drove over , nnd were surprised
to find the front door open No sign of the
old folks could bo discovered A coffee pot
was frozen on the steve , Iho dishes had
bceu washed and put away , hut the hod wus
not disturbed , nnd tbo appearances Indi
cated that the couple hud loft In tbo carlv
ovenlni' . Mrs Cadwallador supposed tliat
they bad gouo over to Irvlngton to visit tha
son who wus sick , and came homo without
suspecting than anything was wrong
Vostorduy the son drova down from Irv
lngton to call on them and found tilings Just
as Inft by Mrs Cadwallador , his sister Ho
could attribute no reaaou for tholr dlsuppoar-
nnco and searched the farm from ono end to
tbo ether No trace could bo found In the
bouse , collar , Darns or well All of the
stock was gone and the place was deserted
He canio over to Cadwalludors und then to
tbo doctor As migbt be supposed his story
caused the greatest oxcitoinent After care
fully examining Into the matter ttio theory
is that the old couple were abducted aud
tukon away by the tbioves who stole the
stock
What lias become of them Is a matter of
conjecture , but it is believed that tboy have
boon murdered It is not thought that the
ola folks would drive away tbo stock , as ho
is soventy-two years of ago and bis wife is
sixty An evidence that they loft in u hurry
wus that the old lady loft bor spectacles the
only pair she had , and her plpo nnd tobacco
The stock taken was valued at about S1.500.
It consisted of seven head of horses and nlno
head of cattle The horses were highly
bred , comprising ono ilea bitten gray tnaro ,
a chestnut sqrrel mare heavy with foal ,
ono light bay gelding , three two-year-old
horse colts , two bays and a black , and
a mare colt coming a year old
. Among the cattle were four Jcrsoy cows ,
three grades , dishorned , a calf and a year
ling Jersey bulL
The old folks have tbreo sons and two
daughters , ah living in this vicinity , and all
in comfortable circumstances , with any of
whom their parents could have a home , so
that there was not tha slightest inducement
for thorn to bo concerned in any such dem
The old man wore a long whlto beard , and
presented a very vcncrablo appearance
The renter of the furm last year was John
Rohr , Who auipped out in September A
part ot the farm was sub-rented to a man
named John Martin , wao romnined until
December und cared for the stock after
Rohr had gene As soon as Martin had
buskod bis corn he moved to a farm bo haa
rented near Fremont In some way , it is
suspected that ho is concerned in the disap
pearance of tbo stock He bears a rather
hard name , and bus a brother who has
served a term in the penitentiary , with
whom ho has been quite a good d ° al of lata
The case haa been placed in the hands of
detectives , who bcliovo that the stock
was driven west
It is'thougbt that the start was made in the
early ovenlng to secure u long nights ' drive
There is something very mysterious about
the whole matter , und it is feared that the
old couple have been foully dealt with It
can not bo told within several days when
tboy disappeared A llboral'roward will bo
paid for the rccovor.v of the stock and the

terday of the decision of tno president in the
Fletcher court-martial case It will bo remembered -
momberod that Lieutenant Colonel Fletcher \

and of cowardice The court found him
guilty and sentenced him to dismissal Since
that time the finding of thu court has
been going through the usual rod tupo of
the army , and has at last been acted upon
by the president , who approved the finding
of the courtbut , nltorcd the sentence to sus

Lieutenant Colonel Fletcher was scon nt
his quarters at Fort Omaha last night He
stated that the result ot the trial was botti u
surprise and u disappointment to him Ho
bad beeti anticipating a bomowhut different
losult but had no objection to make
He said ho should apply for permission from
the department to retire tn his homo ut
Philadelphia , where bo slioulu remain until
thu thrco years expire
Colonel Fletcher remarked that ho did not
regret his course in the uu fortunate alTalr His
wife was on tbo point of IcavliiL' for thu cast
when the atfair occurred , and bo hud thought
It best to suinptn the matter over rather than
to make a disturbance about it He bad
acted as his manhood dictated , and had
done nothing ho was ashamed of Ha
said that Mrs Fletcher was in Philadelphia
at tier homo and would probably romaln
there
General , , Wheaten , commandant of the
post , was also scon and asked his opinion in
tnd matter Ho said tha result mot thu ap
proval of the otlcors at the post , and thought
Colonel Fletcher slioulu consider htmsslf
fortunate la not bolng dismissed from the
service
Captain Mills expressed thd samu views ,
and said the otlior officers concurred in that
opinion
By the natural nrdor of events , Lieutenant
Colonel Fletcher will bo entitled to promo
