In our last issue wo loft eleven engines
bucking snow toward the Cold Stream
woodshed , where ilvo engines and a plow
were Imprisoned All dny Sunduy they
bucked , and reached within a milo of the
place sought On Monday work was ro-
sumed At 3 o'clock ' the Inst run was made ,
and the end of the run was into the shed In
making the Inst run there wus a narrow es
cape fiom a wreck The snow wns so deep

whlstlo for brakes , but his whlstlo had
frozen up , filled up with snow and gave no
sound The train rushed on , and Just ahead
were the imprisrmed plow and Ilvo engines
'J ho front engine was reversed and plunged "
Then there was u lucky circumstance
Conductor liouchnor , who wns on the
third engine , noticed a dead tree near the
track , and this ho know was Just at the on-
tninco of the shed At once ho gave the slg-
nnlto the engineer , who whistled for brakes
This was heard and the engines quickly
stopped The two plows were facing each
other onlv fifty feet apart Then everyone
saw what n narrow escape there had boon
from an awful collisionand shuddered 'Illat

All the engln03 returned to town , and the

A wild niDE
Tuesday morning eight engines of the
Truckeo division , behind the big snow plow ,
all in charge of Conductor lllauey , were sent
out to clear the track to Uono f ho snow
was ten fcot In many places , Dut the masters
of the mighty innehinis which were to make
the the run were looks of determination ,
bordering even on recklessness , which fore
told that they lntonded to make the run ot
their lives Toot , toot 1 This signal to start
was greeted with a chorus of shrieks from
the brazen whistles It was a wild outburst ,
the shrill falsetto discording harshly with
the deep bass and queer caliopo In an in
stant the train moved off slowly nt first , but
gnmlng in momentum at ouch revolution
Hugo volumes of steam and smoke issued
forth nnd lav in a heavy , narrow cloud behind
Toot , toot I Give hcrmoro steam The engines

first drift and the snow How in big clouds in

Boat , tilling the whole cab with snow , closing
the flro box nnd Durylng the fireman Tbo
engineer turned palo for the first tlmo ; ho
tried to reach the reverse lever , but It was

but there was no resoonse from the roar

On they rushed nnd Garcia recovered
Finally , in a safe place , ho again called for
brakes and the train was stepped to let
him shovel out his cab Hlanoy came
down from his perch on the plow nud got
bis breath Away they went uguin , the
snow flying In clouds and masses Uoca was
passed nnd the people of that town sawnsort
of blue streak They thought inav be it was
the snowplow , but were not certain In
passing Clinton the man in charge of the
vBtoro near the tracK opened the front sash
doors to prevent thorn from being broken
In op instant the whole buildine was filled
with snow , On , on rushed the mighty force
that was swooping everything from its path
Uono was reached , and with another wild
chorus of unotrthly jells which drovv thou
sands of people to the streets , the eight
engines covered with snow and ice , came tea
a standstill in tl.o Keuo yard The track was
cleared a distance of thirty-four miles in a
llttlo moro than nn hour It was the wildest
ride on record nnd the work accomplished
unparalleled in the history of railroading
It wus a feat to bo proud of and those engaged -
gaged in the work have somctning to talk

BROWNING'S VALCT TALKED

Mnilo All ICuvlnnil Indignant
There Is a great outcry In England

ferous and indecent result of American
intorviowitig , says the Now York Sun
The achievement which has brought
this out v-ould not bo rcgnidud ns of the
slightest imp ortanco in America ,
but it seems to have croutcd no
end of indignation there Some
no f > ptpof , with nn idea of get
ting at the insldo facts , and remember

of the jioot Browning immediately after
the denth of that distinguished .
This interview was published , and it
called forth an altogether absurd dc-
greo of abusive comment A careful
readinsroftho interview does not disclose -
close the fact that the servant was atall
indiscreet IIo told the world what Mr
Browning liked for broakfa&t , that lie
breathed regularly in his slocp
and that ho hnd a gentle and
amiable man nor with his per
sonal attendants The pestiferous ef
fects of these disclosures arc not exactly
plain to Amotiean eyes Mr Brown
ing , by the way , earned the title of the
prince of ladies men IIo was in many
respects ono of the most popular moil
in London among women , and his social
inllucnco was very great Ho is said

How to Mt on a Hors .
William A. McGibbon , an export ,
writes as follows to the Now York
Uorald to say how a woman should sit
on a horse :
The body should bo balanced exactly
in the middle of the saddle and far
enough back to grasp the second pom-

the third pommel or leaning horn
The rider is now sitting on that part of

tion ho is going ; shoulders well thrown
back so as to expand the chest , • Inking
euro to keep thorn in line and not to
raise ono higher than the other ; the
small of the back slightly bent forward ,
upper part of the arms hanging straight
down from the shoulders and hold
loosely , but close to the sides ; the fore
arm straight out from the ollows ;
wrists rounded inward and on 4 level
with the elbows , each } mnd holding a
rein , iingors closed , Knuckles to the
front , thumbs extended on the ends of
the reins and pointed across the body ;
minds hold Ilvo or six inches apart , ac
cording to the width of the horses neck
in front of the body
From the knee to the foot of the right
log must bo hold close to the forolup of
the saddle , the hcol taised and inclined
backward a little The right side of
the upper part of the right log , from
the knee to the hip joint , should bo
turned on its outer side and hold close
to the saddle , and the insldo of the
upper part of the loft log should bo in
contact with the saddle Tlio loft knee
should bo placed just below the third
pominol , and the lower part of the log
should hang straight down from the
knee and clone to the side of the flap of
the saddle , the upper part of the logs
only to leave the baddio at the rising
trot

the btirrup ns lar ns the ball , the heel

body should bo pliant and accompany
