Ur.B. ] Wheat had a brief weak spell during a part of the session , but the average of prices was hinder tban yesterday's clos ing range , and the ground recovered was hold strongly to the end of the trading. The TOlumo of business was not large , though considerable activity was manifested Into in the di y. Cables were not encouraging par ticularly , though one dispatch announcing that Odessa stocks of wheat had decreased 1,700,000 bushels during the month contrib uted materially to the boom that started nbout noon. The foreign markets dn not display the slightest Indications of oxclto- mont or nervousness , and American ex porters are doing very Httlc. There was n report afloat that twenty-two boat loads had been taken In Now York for export and ten in Philadelphia and Baltimore. The latter Item was vortllcil , but the former proved to bo two instead ot twenty-two boaj , loads- one 2 too many. The receipts nt nil publicly enumerated points of accumulation footed np 042,000 bushels and shipments 077,231 bushels , of which only n small per ccutuco cleared from seaboard Doris. The Receipts nt Minneapolis nnd Du- lulh are certainly falling oft nnd farmers' deliveries are not Increasing anywhere in the northwest , being about stationary or ulno decreasing. The north west was on both Bides of the speculative market hero to-day. There was fair buying nrd good selling of futures. The winter wheat movement I * moderate , neither showIng - Ing drying up nor undue stimulation. The quality of the wheat now coming on the market h Improving , however , which goes to support the theory that farmers have about worked off their poor stuff. Corn feels this more quickly nnd more decidedly than wheat , but the probabilities in this direction , never theless , form a topic of earnest discussion among wheat traders. Rain fell .yesterday and last night in Illinois , Indiana. Iowa. Dakota , Nebraska , Kansas and Missouri , and the weather Is cloudy and threatening fn the lake region. Haln net In hero to-day. December oponcd at 7 ! > % c , ranged for n good while nt 7J ( ) @ 7lJ ) c1 going once to tljO ( , recovering to TU fc. however , but breaking to TOJfc , wliero a lot of buying limits were struck and the market reacted quickly. Dullness and heaviness were the prevailing fcaturci for n time , but about 13 o'clock LJndblom , Mitchell and a few other local operators started to buying on a lib eral scaln and gave the market an upward inclination. Thereafter , and until the close , the tone of the market was strong , Decem ber going to SOc. The onicinl close was 79c. May opened nt 83e , ranged ut 83J @ 33 } o during the most of the morning , but moved the Intt hour , wltu Dei-ember closing strong nt saM@$4e. October rested nt 7S c. Com. pared with yesterday's closing prices the market shows a net gnin of ; ' 6 ( < ? > c. There was u good deal of activity in * the corn pit , with prices considerably higher on near futures and sensibly higher also for May. The shorts wore nervous and attunes excited , with much livelier trading and on a heavier scale tban for months before. The receipts hero were -43 curs , against -00 ex pected , and by canal 35,500 * bushels were received in addition. November was eagerly bought at the advancing prices and the .movement spread to December , January nnd May. Atlantic coast clearances were heavy and the forclcn markets about steady , but the principal point in its influence upon prices wan u general rain reported as pre vailing throughout the corn country. The closing prices show an advance since yes tcrday of about lo in cash and October , % in November and -JgC in May , the figures being October SKSfc , November 32'Xo and In the outs market continued strength was manifested , with a largo speculative business recorded m May nt ai6ita-a , or /tf ® improvement. The poatod receipts were but moderate , though the direct cause of tbo llrmnoss wus attributed to the udvanr.o In corn. Again , the oata market la generally bellovcd to no largely oversold and the shorts are disposed to cover. Near futures were nominally strong , though neglected , with IDjtf bid for December and lOo for next month. October was nominally ISKe. ns that was the price paid for a few cars ot No. 2 to co to storo. Tbo close was unusual ! } active nnd strong und under n sharp demand from shorts Muy touched 22/j@22 ! > $ cj. The sensation of the day was the slump of ovcr.f 1.00 per barrel in October none within flvo minutes of.tho closo. A iliciuo broker offered to sell nt $10.25 , then nt 510.00 , and the market instantly became panicky , paclr. crs adding to the weakness by olTerlng to sell Inrco quantities. Just at the oloso Field & Lindley sold 500 barrels of Oc tober at f'J.GO ' , which was the price \yhon the boll tapped. October lard In tbo meantime dropped to 10.15 and the satno option of ribs to $5.05. Not in u el : business in any line transpired on the break , Tlio short interest apparently was practic nlly eliminated. Based on yesterday's lutes quotations October pork closed $1.40 lower with November 25e und year and January lD@lK'cofT.
