THE OMAHA DAIIiY BEE : WIMNESDAY , OCTOBER 30 , 1889. THE SPECULATIVE MARKER Wheat Starts In Firm Enough But Slowly Yields. CORN EASIER AND LESS ACTIVE. An tlncctitcil mill Nervous Feeling ARftln PrcvnllH In Provision. Prime Onttlo Hcnrco HORS In Active Demand. CHICAGO PIIOUUCB MAR1CBT8. Cmatoo , Oc' , . 29. ISpccial Telegram to Tnc UEB. ] Wheat stnricd In firm enough , apparently , with December selling nt 80o nnd Mny nt 83J e. The market slowly yielded , ns tnueh from Inactivity , perhaps , as from pressure , December going to TOJfo nnd Mny showing loss depreciation. It was slowly and as surely hardened , December getting back to SOo and May to & : i ; c. These fluctuations comprised all the changes up to nboutll o'clock. When the session was about half through the market turned weak nnd sold off sharply to 70 o and Sfljrfo for December and May. A J c rally followed nnd then n break to 70Vc and & % c. Below 83) 0 there was freer soiling of long wh at than nt tiny tlmo for several days nnd renewed speculative selling served to Intensify the weakness. The mar ket looked exceedingly slclr , but strong buying by Haker , Dunn and others of similar cttllbor checked the downward tend ency anil caused soaio recovery In values. The market toward the last was steady nt } fa or such a matter above- the Insldo figures realized and the closing quotations wcro 78c for October , 79) ) < fc for December nnd 83J o for May , on average net loss of % @M" for the day. In the aggregate the amount of business ( h futures was qulto up to the average , although trading was unevenly dis tributed through the session , Thcro was nothing particularly significant In dealings , so far ns could bo observed. Ctidahy , Partridge and their fallowings were un equivocally bearish , selling on hard spots and on weak spots , un hill and down. The general crowd , which has been bullish for some tlmo past , scows to bo undergoing a change of heart , though the general scalping crowd Is likely to turn a somersault In sentiment in tiny 'ju change lu unices. His as unstable as the wind. The char acter of the market news that , Honied in was not such as to oxclto the speculative pulse tea a dangerous degree. The majority of the private cables ranged from quiet 10 weak and public cables presented n somewhat ragged and Jagged appearance. California was both higher nnd lower , according to position. Paris flour was quoted lower nnd English country markets higher , though the explana tion was again offered that the higher prices paid for English homo wheat Is ou account of the improvement In the quality of the offer ings , which would go to show that the nd- vunco is in a measure deceptive. The out- sldo markets were generally rather llrmcr than Chicago , but none of them scorned bedded iu their stubbornness. Locally thcro are no now features of Interest In the mar ket. Receipts nro diminishing. Stocks In regular warehouses Include I,47y-I03 bushels. The corn market was easier and less ac tive than on the preceding1 day. The smalt receipts gave n slight stimulus to prices early in the day , but this was succeeded l > .v dull ness ana a loss of iho early advance and trade besides. The trading was of a scalp ing character and amongst the local opera tors values were to some extent Injuriously affected , in sympathy with the weak tone of the wheat market. Notwithstanding that the general outlook was still qulto favorable to llrmceos in near deliveries , there was much deairo to buy to-day. Probably the clearer weather had some influence on the market. The changes since yesterday are Immaterial , amounting only to % c in seller May and l-10o in seller November , the latter closing nt 31 c and Mny at 33 @ 33J e. The oats market was devoid of any fea ture of any special interest , with only a light speculative business recorded. The marlcot was steady and flrui , with May around 2IJ c. and at ono time touching a pointabovethat. Next month xvas saleable in a small way at 18 ; ' @ 18 > tf , whllo October at tracted no interest. The posted receipts were materially below the estimate , whllo the withdrawals for shipment were unim portant. Cor lots of No. 3 to go to store sold sparingly nt the former figure of IS' c. No. 2 whlto oats for future delivery were In llt- tlo favor and scarcely named. An unsettled und rather nervous feeling agalu existed In the provision market to day. Dealings were to a considerable ex- tout'of on evening up character , and tbo volume of now busi ness transacted m more deferred deliv eries was under the average , light * iu fact. For both pork and lard ihoro was a strong opening. October lard made gains over night of 20c , Ina comparatively short tlmo advanced Co more , or to $0.82 , November meanwhile working up to f .OTK@0.10 on the split. October pork started at S10.7S , or 5o higher , and quickly sold at $10.85. Uutchlnson was the largest Individual buyer of the hitter , that operator taking in all some 2,000 barrels of the 5OUO barrels or so that changed hands. Novem ber pork did not follow October on the bulge , but took the opposite course. Initial trades In it were nt ? 'J.75 , bolng lOc up , but the unloading by longs broketno pnco before noon to $9.60. The recovery from inside fig ures were alight nnd year weakened to $ 'J.17& ' and January to $9.42 . Mitchell was u fair buyer of January. The short Interest in Octo ber lard is of a line quality , but Is not gen erally Dollovcd to bo extensive. After the price was run up to $0.85 , under urgent buyIng - Ing , the pressure lot up and the market re acted sharply to $0.l' . So far as could bo observed from surface Indications , the short interest was not concentrated aim buying at the start was scattering. The early auvance of f > @ 10o reported In prices for hogs at the yards did not hold , und tuu > was not without BOino bearish Inlluouco lute In the session , es pecially as the ostlmatedo'ccolpts for tomorrow row were 0,000 head. CHICAGO lavE STOOK. Cnicxoo , Oct. 29. [ Spoolal Telegram to Tijq HEB. ] CATTLE The receipts were divided at 0,000 natives , 1,50u Texans and 1,600 rangers , Prlino fat natives were scarce and sold at strong prices , ono lot uialdnp 15.03 , a big pnco' considering what fair to good eattlo are selling at. Low grade and common liat'ives sold rather bolter than yesterday , yet there was llttlo or no change in values. Nutlvo butchers' stock , on account of the light run of Tcxuns , sold a hade better , The few rangers on the market were not prime , yet sold for all they were worth. Tlioro was a fair business in the stockar and feeder line at unchanged prices. Choice to extra beeves. W.COc75.iO ( : medium to good steers , 11150 to 1500 Ibs.'st 01 04.60 : 1800 to 1WO ! NEW Voim , Oct. 29.-Speclal | Tolegrara to Tin HEB.l-SiocKs-Not for a month has the trade been so much at sea on rallroat stocks and seldom so few positive opinions held over by the loaders as at the opening to-day. The market docs not act natural The bears appear to have undue Influence , even with the tight argument practically re moved. It was talked Ian night that Nat Jones bad sold out In dlsgunt and Cammacks ! action cannot be understood. The street is convinced that Gould will take no hand In the market for the present , and this dltcour ages the bulls. The market opened with ir regular change * from last night There was n very modcrato business done , and , whllo } Ugar Hcflncrles wcro not active , Union 'aclflc , Heading , St. Paul and Denver , Texas & Fort \VOrth did a good business , followed by llurllngton , Now England , Missouri Pa- clflc , and Lake Shore , the others bolng di'll nnd uninteresting. The market soon devel oped a generally stronger tone and advances ot small fractions were established among stocks of the ( regular list , but Sugar was again weak , nnd from C9K at the opening retired to 03 } . This decline was afterward recovered , but It again declined to 07 * . Considerable feverish ness was noticeable In the regular list and many stocks lost the early advance , whllo Coal stocks wore quite wenr ! , but the decline brought In more busi ness and prices advanced all along the line , rho hour to 12 o'clock was marked by no Im portant changes , the best strength bolng shown by the Vanderblltii. In fact there has beou BO little chungo in the cattle market of the past week or wore , either In the character of the rocqlpU or tn.6 inccs paid , that thcro has boon but very ittlo to say regarding the uinrkel. Good > covcs hnvo been In such light supply that hey have commanded strong prices on any lay. While thcro wcro ho prlmo heavy icovcs hero , there xvas ono bunch of medium weight cattla good enough to bring f4.40. The majority of the natives wcro sold nt ! 3.50@3 70. Thcro was a pretty good show- ng of uow stuff , nnd with liberal receipts At ivould not bo surprising to sco prices lower. The buyers claim that they have ocorr paying .00 much for cow stuff , and with that feei ng among thu buyers , about the only thing .hat can maintain steady prices is light , re ceipts. The natives hero brought $1.75 ® 2.40 , whllo n few westerns brought (1.80. Among to-day's offerings of feeders wcro quite u number of pretty good westerns , which sold at 2.45(32.75. ( Quito a good many Dakota feeders nro coming In now of fair quality. The market was qulto active at ormcr prices , nnd a good manv head of eit- .lo changed hands before the close. Hoes. * To-doy's hog market was upon the whole about like yesterday's market. After the tlrst round the market was lot very active , the salesmen , as a rule , ask- , n ? stronger prices than the buyers were willing to pay.
